  1. I had my first bison tartar here. It was pretty good but I personally didn't think it was that unique from the other typical beef tartars.
The duck was very good but too salty for my taste. I was satisfied with my rack of lamb and would get it again.
If there's one thing I have a strong negative opinion on..it is…do not get the pecan tart. It is so bready and tastes more like something for breakfast.
The ambiance is great. quite with dim lights. perfect to go on a date too.

  2. I LOVE this spot. I stumbled in here one night as it's just around the corner from my apartment, but after dinner it's a place I would recommend much more than just a neighborhood go-to. The atmosphere is perfect for date night, candlelight and very intimate. Even though it's very small it was quiet enough to talk.

The service was superb. The waitress was just the right amount of attentive, yet not overbearing. She was very knowledgeable about the wine selection and was not afraid to make suggestions. The snails were a bit spicy for my taste, but that's personal preference. The tuna tartar was perfect. I had the brioche stuffed quail which was fabulous, cooked to perfection! The risotto was a bit rich for my taste, but delicious and again personal preference… probably magnified by the fact that I was stuffed from the appetizers!

Worth looking for on this unpretentious street in the LES… especially for an intimate date! Also, Jadis wine bar is just a few doors down so that's great for a pre-dinner or after-dinner glass of wine!

  3. When my sister and I mosey'd in here, we were the only ones in. The place is tiny, so thank god it wasn't crowded. The food is certainly up there in price, but it's delicious. My sister ordered the quail, while I stuck with soup and pasta. I would never want to go here on a Friday or Saturday night, because it simply would not be comfortable because of the size. They had a decent wine list, as well as amazing looking desserts, but by that time we were too full! (They also serve homemade bread and white bean spread, which was my favorite thing there)

  4. 2nd time dining at this place and it is still by far my favorite french spot. There is no place that does foie gras the way they do here. The blend of it on top of a puree on chick peas along with seared scallops are just the perfect match in my mouth. I had the duck breast my first time and lamb the second- did no disappoint. The menu is simple, which is always a good sign and service is great! I highly recommend everyone to come here at least once. Perfect date spot!

  5. From its half a dozen tables to its wine and beer-only beverage menu to its bricked walls, Gentleman Farmer was simply adorable!  The cozy atmosphere exuded intimacy, while the farm-to-table cuisine screamed fresh deliciousness.

We decided to treat ourselves to a bottle of white wine.  The 2013 Holzgasse Buchegger Gruner Veltlner from Kremstal, Austria was extremely smooth, with little acidity, but loads of ripe fruit flavors.  It also possessed a slight effervescence.  While we caught up over the fragrant beverages, we also munched on some doughy, artisan white bread, which was served with a mixed pepper salsa, in addition to standard butter.

We started the meal with two appetizers.  The Smoked Breast Salad was phenomenal!  Long stems sprouted leaves of baby arugula, which wwere topped with chopped mangoes, candied walnuts, shaved pecorino, and the namesake smoked duck.  The poultry was sliced thin and each piece had only a thin layer of fat.  Some slices had appeared to be roasted, while others were more like a jerky or bacon, but, regardless of the preparation, the duck tasted of the highest quality and the perfect amount of smoke.  The Seared Scallop starter included 3 medium-sized sea scallops and one little pillow of foie gras.  The scallops had the perfect hint of salt and an expert layer of crispiness on the top sides.  The foie gras was sweet, creamy, and smoky.  An earthy Split Pea Veloute was spread along the plate, as well.

In terms of the entrees, the Pork Filet Mignon was essentially a large loin that retained its juicy moistness.  It was served with a warm salad of Brussels Sprouts, Shitake Mushrooms, and Cherry Tomatoes.  The Venison Steak was lean, tender, and easy to slice, even when prepared medium rare.  The creamy and slightly funky Roquefort Sauce was a perfect complement to the meat.  Celery Root and Braised Endive served as the accompaniments.  These tasty dishes were also super affordable, with all of the restaurant's entrees ranging from only $18-$32.

My experience at Gentleman Farmer was one of the best meals that I have had in quite a while.  You should definitely note that reservations are a must, due to its size and excellence.  If it is not already on your must-visit list, add it now!

  6. Ohhh, it's so bad and disappointing (for dinner). I didn't finish any dish that came out except for the free bread (which was tasty). The summer vegetable salad was nothing as described and just sad and steamed and sour tasting. The pesto pasta with chicken was a gloppy mush of overcooked pasta and bitter arugula and frozen chicken strips. The server forgot most of our drink orders and I never got my drink order.

  7. We had made reservations at the Ft. Greene location, but ended up not being able to go. So we came here as a dinner re-do. The onion soup was INSANE, it's the best I've ever had and the bison tartare lived up to the hype. As for my main, the duck dish, it was good, but the side it came with didn't quite make any sense. My husband's rib that he ordered was delicious, but a seemingly small serving and the weirdly sweet root veggie puree was hard to eat. Also, the restaurant was too cramped, I felt like I was eating at one large communal table and without any music playing, it was like you were in listening in on everyone else's conversation. I hope they iron out the kinks soon, because there's potential to be great dining experience.

  8. I can't say enough good things about Gentleman Farmer. Came here for a friend's birthday and the restaurant was so much smaller than I imagined. The restaurant is basically a rectangle and there are only a couple of tables inside. Definitely make a reservation if you want to come here.

However, because of the small space the restaurant had a very intimate and peaceful vibe. And, the food is amazing. I ordered the venison steak and it was out of this world. The meat was so tender and flavorful and just perfect. I didn't even know what braised endives or celery roots were, but those were great too. The celery root was puréed into a mashed potato like consistency and I'm guessing that it was not only tasty, but also healthy. My friend ordered the smoked duck breast and that was amazing as well. I would recommend both dishes: 5/5.

Also, the service was great. They kept giving us bread refills which made me very happy.
