Malaparte

“I originally set out to try Malatesta, but since the wait was an hour the host recommended we try their new restaurant Malaparte.”

“Penne with Porcini Mushrooms & Truffle Oil – the penne are hand made and cooked al dente.”

“Tucked away in a less foot trafficked area than it's sister restaurant Malateste, Malaparte has a similar menu and a slightly nicer looking rustic room.”

  1. I very much enjoyed my dinner experience at Malaparte. It was a small, cozy restaurant in West Village/borderline Chelsea filled with people looking for comfort food and good wine at a great value. First-comers, be aware it's cash only.

    We ordered the following:
    – Mussels in Spicy Tomato Sauce. Absolutely delicious. The mussels were juicy and the tomato sauce was packed with flavor and the sweetness of the tomatoes really complemented the mussels. Portion fairly large, even if you opt in for small.
    – Porcini Mushroom Pizza with Mozzarella, Truffle Oil & Grana. This was just good. Everything you expected from a well-composed artisanal slice.
    – Spaghetti all Carbonara. Pasta had the perfect bite. Good pepper flavor. Not the best carbonara I had. Thought more flavor could've been brought out from the guanciale, but I finished the dish so that must account for something.
    – Rigatoni al porcini. Again, pasta cooked perfectly. I think I would've loved this dish so much more if we didn't have the porcini pizza as the antipasto because the flavors had some some overlap, but still an excellent pasta dish.

    Would definitely come back here.

  2. we determined that i had the winning dish- the mushroom rigatoni- with the pesto spaghetti a close second (carbonara third and the lasagna, surprisingly, was enjoyed least). With no chittarra on this menu (versus big sis malatesta), I was forced to try new things (which i have an undiagnosed allergy to), but, luckily, it worked out. the space is open and beautiful with a lot of natural light. The servers are of course wonderful and helpful.

  3. If you are looking for a trendy yet calmer spot for a solid Italian meal in the West Village, Malaparte is a great option.  It does not have the intense buzz that some restaurants have downtown, but it has enough to make it exciting.  The food is also great – I rarely order lasagna but went with the lasagna bolognese and it was delicious.  We started with the mixed green salad, which was also well dressed and fresh.

I wouldn't say this is the best Italian restaurant downtown or in the West Village, but the atmosphere was enjoyable and the food was very good.

  4. stopped in here for late dinner with my roommate. first impression was an overall rustic, charming, homey feel which i love! low lights with candles and wood everywhere, yes please.

we started off with two glasses of red wine at $8 each (chianti for me, cab for him) and delicious complimentary bread. the bread basket was a mix of focaccia and french with a bottle of olive oil, that stayed on the table the entire meal.

for starters we got the burrata with prosciutto & arugula. the creamy cheese paired excellently with the sharp tangy prosciutto. we then shared the pizza special along with the porcini rigatoni. the rigatoni was perfectly al dente tossed in a delicious light sauce. the pizza had crumbled sausage, arugula and a creamy cheese. not your standard mozzarella. the crust was light and crispy.

we were so full that we had to pass on dessert, but the plates of tiramisu coming out from the kitchen looked so good. i must get when i come back!

  5. This place makes my heart happy in so many ways.

It's so simple but in the best ways possible. The menu is short but sweet, the restaurant is small but quaint, and the servers were very genuine. The ambiance is just real. The food was all fresh and full of flavour, so satisfying and wonderful!

Maybe it was the wine they served me but my experience was unforgettable. I am also somewhat nostalgic when it comes to fresh pasta as my grandmother is Italian and would make it for me every Sunday  (yeah, I know, me and everyone else in NYC). However, I haven't seen her in a few years so it made me happy.

I would obviously recommend you give this place a try.

  6. This restaurant is so cute! There is only one bathroom though for men and women so it can get a little long.

-Impeta Di Cozze – Mussels in Spicy Sauce – I would pass on this. Mussels were a little fish-y. But the portion was big!

-Di Porcini Tartufata – Truffle Mushroom Pizza – Get this if you love truffle and mushrooms. It was very good.

-Di Rucola E prosciutto Di Parma – Prosciutto pizza – This was mediocre. My friend didn't even finish her's. I would recommend the truffle pizza over this one.

-Squid salad – Delicious. Perfectly cooked squid and there was a generous portion of squid for the price. The salad was perfectly dressed.

  7. Was waiting for a table at The Spotted Pig and decided to walk around the neighborhood to kill sometime and we stumbled upon this chic and charming spot that does really fresh and authentic pizza and pasta. Loved the mushroom thin crust pizza that is topped with generous amounts of cheese, and that perfectly coated smoky salty carbonara. Don't miss out on this hidden gem. Seems like the locals here have been keeping mum about this.

  8. On Manhattan and craving Italian? Well then this is where you should be heading. Fantastic food and excellent service. Everything is good and worth the price. Actually the prices are not bad at all. If I understand correctly there's a sister restaurant @ Washington and Christoffer, Malatesta. They are equally good.
