  1. Bagel nirvana! The bagels at this historic and famous eatery are worth the trip downtown. The bagel with salmon and Liz are heavenly.  The salty lox is counterbalanced by the perfectly boiled and baked bagels. The portions are generous so this could be your meal. I washed it down with a egg cream soda which provided a sweet almost dessert like experience.

The French toast babka was also a hit.  It is eggy and crunchy on the outside and moist and just gooey enough to be perfect.  Slather the French toast with butter and syrup and you won't need to eat the rest of the day.  They also sell deli items by the pound do you can stock up on herring and other Kosher staples before heading back home.

Russ & Daughters had been here forever and is now on the super trendy Lower East Side. I remember shopping on Orchard and Delancy Streets with my mom and sister for our holiday dresses and designer labels at half price before outlet malls were invented. How times have changed. Now tenement buildings are considered hip and the other restaurants in the area  have all descendants in what was a fabulous ethnic neighborhood.  Enjoy both the hipster bars and the fabulous Russ & Daughters.

  2. Maybe it's my high expectations, but R&D was just "good." Not great, not bad. The smoked fish is definitely the thing to try here. I ordered a side of smoked salmon and can see why people travel all the way here for brunch! However, the latkes did not impress me–they're your typical latkes–and may have been a bit too thick for my taste. Maybe I need to order only the lox and bagel instead next time (if I do return…). Overall, Russ & Daughters is a great place for grabbing brunch with family and/or friends, but I don't know if it's worth the hype.

  3. Really incredible traditional deli on Houston just north of Soho. These guys have a sit-down restaurant at another location, but this is a true deli counter with everything from amazing salmon, any kind of spread (the most delicious chopped liver), roe, desserts, fruit, nuts and just about anything else you can imagine. You can pick from a list of sandwiches, bring home quarts or pounds, or just eat something amazing.

Had a chopped liver sandwich on a salt bagel…  to die for.  So amazing. Couldn't stop.

Also bought 2 lbs of smoked salmon and chopped liver to go which were the hit of a Tanglewood picnic. So delicious and lots of varieties. Everything we tried was just amazing.

These guys are super nice, and this place is the real deal. Definitely go there!!

  4. Now everyone's got the hype of this place! I simply could not believe my eyes when I dropped by around 830 am in the morning, only to realize that there were already 32 people waiting for the bagel order in front of me! R&D was certainly not those types of bagel priced at 3 bucks on the street, where you ate it simply because you were starving at that point in time; it was served with a selection of premium cured salmon, and can be topped with your choice of caviar, salmon roe or veggie slices by request. Either toasted or not, the bagel has naturally present a small of freshness, that has completely caught up my crave.

Not quite sure which meat to go with my everything bagel, I opted for the wild western nova as suggested, and paired it with red onion and tomato. Not a huge fan of cream cheese (don't judge me on this…), I asked for the veggie one and eventually tore it off when eating my bagel. With probably the best cured salmon, my bagel was certainly the best I have ever had in my life.

You've gotta waste your calories on something more worthwhile, and R&D was for sure one of those few places on earth.

Friendly reminder: come early, bring your appetite, and enjoy!

  5. Quite possibly, I believe I just had the best bagel in New York City. Like an idiot, I simply got the everything bagel with vegetable schmear. Well, ain't I the asshole?! My husband got an onion bagel with horseradish cream cheese and pastrami smoked salmon. And of course, onion and tomato.

    IT WAS HEAVEN!!!!!

I have ave truly robbed myself. I spent a year in pastry school, less than a mile from BAGEL GENIUS, and before today, I never ate here. I want a do-over. How could this happen?

  6. This place was not only featured on Anthony Bourdain's show…more importantly it was featured on Louis CK's Louie. And that was enough to send me here on a bagel bender.

I went out of my way one weekend and bought a dozen bagels here. My absolute favorite is the caviar & lox bagel. Honestly, you can get good bagels anywhere but oooooo the fish and caviar cream cheese here is one of a kind.

Although this place is more famous for its fish and what not, there's also a selection of fresh juices. As a bagel fanatic, I recommend the egg bagel and as much caviar cream cheese with lox as possible!

  7. Anthony Bourdain's "13 Places to Eat Before You Die"

Grab a ticket when you enter and find a space to stand while you wait for your number to be called. There are quite a few sandwich choices. We decided to be basic and ordered a classic- bagel and cream cheese topped with slices of smoked salmon. We didn't know which salmon to get and the employee suggested Gaspe Nova. Loved it! I would've been even better if we asked for the bagel to be toasted.
