  1. I really enjoyed my experience here. I came in for a quick bite around 2:30 and was happy to see that the lunch specials. I got two a/c rolls & it came with a super yummy salad & miso soup ($8 and change). I know that combo sounds really basic but let me tell you it wasn't. To start the salad was delicious, it was an assortment of greens not just the plan iceberg lettuce commonly served with sushi and some veggies with a very unique twist & delicious dressing. Plus it was a good size salad (Salad 5/5). Up next was the miso soup I had two bowls! It was perfect in my opinion. The soup was not to salty, had a perfect balance of tofu, seaweed & enoki mushrooms (Miso soup 6/5). Lastly was my avocado cucumber rolls. The rolls came quickly, where fresh & tasted great (A/C roll 5/5). Now on to the service. I really loved the service. Fast, friendly & polite. They did everything right!

  2. I've now had sushi from here twice, and both times it really hit the spot! The restaurant itself is small but nice. When I came for dinner with a friend, there was no wait on a Friday night. I ordered the sushi platter because I wanted a mix of different things. It came with a tasty salad with ginger dressing (or miso soup if you prefer) with 8 pieces of different sushi. All of them were delicious, and the meal was filling and not too expensive.

The other time my friend and I ordered takeout and it was hassle-free. We both ordered the same thing and were both happy with our choice. Spicy tuna roll and Alaska roll — can't go wrong! The portions were good and reasonably priced. I'm pretty sure I'm going to become a regular here.

  3. Came here for a super late lunch. Thankfully, the lunch special was still running (12-3:30PM, even on the weekends!!) My friend and I both ordered the chirashi lunch specials because nothing else on the bento box or lunch special menus really caught our eye.

The specials came with a salad and soup. The salad was a little wilted, but not horribly, and the soup was greatly appreciated on a drizzly day. The fish was surprisingly fresh for this little establishment on the UES, and the portions generous, although two of the 'fish' were basically cop-outs: a piece of boiled shrimp and a stick of imitation crab both sliced in half. We had 3 pieces each of the salmon and tuna sashimi though, which more than made up for the non-sashimis.

Service was fine. Since we were the only customers in the restaurant for the duration of our visit, we had all of their attention. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, and if this place wasn't so far from home, I'm sure that I would be here more frequently!

  4. Less than amazing due to an unfortunate oversight.

I was meeting my boyfriend here and I let the hostess and my waitress know when I arrived that it was his birthday.

Service was overly attentive before we ordered. The waitress only had a few tables and she basically stared us down until we were ready to order.

Ambiance was nice, nothing major to comment in that area.

Food was good, we didn't try any of the fish, so I can't comment on the freshness.

And lo and behold…the check came without any birthday celebration! In my opinion, a huge oversight! Clearly I couldn't remind the waitress in front of the birthday boy, so I just dropped it and didn't mention it but clearly I was less than impressed.

  5. This is a really nice authentic feel and tasting Japanese place. It's actually the second time I've been here and the food was really very good. I think the problem is, with all these cheaper type sushi places around, Amura is often overlooked – but if you spend some time here, you'll notice the little things that make it such a nice experience.

Something simple like the ginger dressing is not the bright orange that you might see on top of your salad – i believe it's like a homemade dressing that is the real color of ginger. Then I was able to get a grilled sake soaked miso black cod (only app size – the other black cod is different). Perfectly flaky, lovely miso flavor and no bones – soo good. We were only there for lunch so the fiance got the lunch special and the chicken teriyaki did not disappoint.

Like I had mentioned earlier, the price point is a bit on the higher side in comparison with the other more cost friendly places, but whether it's just city prices or quality prices, I think Amura needs to be a place to check out!

I'd come back when I'm in the neighborhood! 🙂

  6. …I love sushi…Japanese Food in general.

Excited to try this place as a result of their Yelp Reviews.

Had the Lunch Special which is a phenom bargain.

The Tempura Roll was good. Not amazing and a little odd because it was Tempura Shrimp with this huge hunk of lettuce wrapped in the roll…it was just ok.

The Spicy Salmon and the Spicy Tuna were just plain WEIRD ~ the "seafood" was sorta cubed and creamy/icky looking. Like hmmm goop.  It wasn't a traditional piece of fish rolled into the rice.  Hard to describe.  In short it was just weird. There was no spice or taste.   Concerning enough I didn't eat it.

In short, perhaps in an effort to offer a super deal, the chef short changed quality?

  7. I went to Amura the other night with my dear friend, and I have to admit that I enjoyed it very much. I am very partial to my favorite Sushi spot, so although I am always willing to try a new place, my heart still belongs to one in particular. I had the Kani Salad and it was absolutely fantastic. In fact, it was probably one of my favorites that I have had anywhere to date. I asked for a side of ginger dressing and poured a little on top and it was delicious. The sweetness from the krab with the ginger dressing and crunch of the shredded vegetables with the pop of the caviar is an amazing juxtaposition. I ordered the pork gyoza appetizer and two rolls: Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll and Spider Roll. I loved the pork gyoza dumplings because the pork was so flavorful and the dumplings were perfectly seared with a light crisp and the sauce was awesome. I really enjoyed the Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll but the Spider Roll didn't really impress me at all; I have had much crispier and meatier soft shell crab in Spider Rolls before. The sake was traditional hot sake and I always enjoy that. I would definitely go back to Amura again when I am visiting my friend on the Upper East Side.

  8. Fantastic nice casual restaurant  for chicken and sushi.

We were walking 2nd avenue looking for a place to have lunch, and my son was hesitant as he does not eat sushi, but I confirmed with the server they had a solid chicken dish he would like.

He ordered the teriyaki chicken with sauce on the side, and I had a chicken bento box the server recommended. Both came with a very good side  salad and miso soup to start. The bento box included shrimp shumai, a California roll, white rice, and chicken strips.

My very picky son loved the chicken teriyaki and rice, and then ate some of my chicken – always a great sign, makes me a very happy mom when likes something so much he wants more.

    The server was extremely friendly.

This is definitely going to be a goto spot for us; when my son is happy I am happy. And they deliver. Highly recommend.
