  1. I got to experience Andre's Hungarian's cinnamon babka this wkend.  My boyfriend calls me "a watered-down Eastern European" so I'm always intrigued by foods from Central and Eastern Europe.  The babka was delicious–tasted like a good cinnamon bun but not coated with sticky frosting. It was a good choice for dessert and made for lots of leftovers to share.  The bakery itself is small but had a variety of offerings.  I would certainly go back there.

  2. while the characters of Seinfeld consider the cinnamon babka to be a "lesser babka", perhaps they would rethink the errors of their ways by trying the cinnamon babka at Andre's.

for $12, you get a delicious, decently-sized, cinnamon-and-raisin-filled babka. light and savory, it will certainly hit the spot. perhaps not as good as your friend's homemade dinosaur-sized Boston cream cupcake, but still good.

cash only, and it's take-out only (they have another location in the city with seating). still, worth a look if you like Eastern European sweets!

  3. On my way to visit my BFF, I walked past 67th Ave and halt in front of Andre's. The mouth watering displays of fresh made coconut macaroons, strudels, pies, linzer tarts, ruglach, and even mini danishes can blind anyone with a sweet tooth!
If you're not in the mood for pastries, a step inside the shop reveals more treats- chocolate mousse cake, Napoleon, butter cookies, and all sorts of Hungarian sweets. It's a very small bakery that is meant for take-out only. I had their macaroons, savory cheese puffs, and the chocolate mousse cake. I was also in the mood for Napoleon but no thanks to the guy that brought out the entire tray-all 7 pcs!!   The macaroons are delicious! Crispy, sweet coconut shreds that appears to be light and fluffy yet it breaks open to reveal the dense and chewy texture. (all pastries are priced at $7.99/lb.). I'm not a big fan of the savory cheese puffs, it was too salty and buttery. Overall, it was like eating a flaky cheese croissant. And, the chocolate mousse was not rich and dense but light and foamy. I'm guessing the recipe was substituted with whipped cream, cheaper version cream, and weak chocolate which equals to a bad combo. I will def be back for the strudels and pies!

  4. go for ruglach here and try the other sweets, too. but watch out for the lady who does not smile and treat you all-business attitude, no interpersonal interaction – buy and go away. Smile that you don't have to encounter her for the entire day. just bring the sweets and forget about the sour attitude.

  5. A timeless bakery located in the middle of nowhere. As my friend and I were walking towards QCM, the bright red storefront of Andre's Hungarian caught my eye. A quick glimpse of the word "Pastries" grabbed my full attention. I knew, I just knew, that I had to check this place out.

Walking in, you are greeted by the warm mouthwatering  smell of butter and other freshly baking goods in the more secret part of the store. The place is rather small and congested. There is barely any space between the counters and the area for customers to walk by. Other than me and my friend, there was only one other patron(he looked like a long-time customer) in the bakery. By the time I had made it to the counters, more than half of what was on display was already gone. What remained were a few cakes and cookies.

A patient and friendly woman assisted me in my selection of pastries. I opted for two cookies(you don't have to buy them by the pound) and a Cherry Bar. Because this place is set up as a grab-and-go kind of place, to my surprise and amusement, there are no utensils(LOL)!

The two cookies(Chocolate Cookie w/ Raspberry Jam & Chocolate Rugelach) were rich and buttery in flavor. The raspberry jam contrasted well with the chocolate in the first cookie, and the flaky and buttery puff pastry tasted amazing alongside the chocolate filling of the mini Rugelach.

    Cherry Bar-
Sandwiched between two golden brown layers of pastry, was a generous filling of cherry jam and pitted cherries! The bittersweet taste of the filling was offset by the golden brown layers.

    Delicious!!!

  6. Andre's makes an awesome apple and cherry strudel. Their rugalah is outstanding as well. They have been around here in Rego Park for years. It's a very consistent bakery.

  7. As a Sutton Place resident, I've been looking forward to this bakery's opening since my roommate (who is Hungarian) saw the sign.

It's been around since 1976 with original location in Queens. They have a wonderful, fresh assortment of croissants, danishes, cakes, ruglachs, etc

My favorites to date are the poppyseed beigli (roll) and napoleon. I believe for individual pastries, prices range from $2.50-$5. They sell some cakes as well, about 10 inches that go for $24

If you're in town for fresh, real, authentic European pastries (unlike all the Midtown delis/sandwich shops) – definitely stop by for breakfast or snack.

    I believe hours are 7:00am-7:00pm

  8. I discovered this place while walking along Queens Blvd. A Manhattanite in Queens? WHAT?!
I slept over my best friend's apartment in the neighborhood, chose not to bring a change of clothes, and did the walk of shame along Queens Blvd. in search of breakfast. I opted for nasty coffee from Starbucks and 3 rugelach cookies from this place.
The store's name sounded familiar and the cookies in the window looked tantalizing.
For 3 relatively small cookies- $2. Call me cheap but I thought it was pretty pricey. Definitely cheaper than some other places I've tried but still pricey. I bought them anyway. And the lady at the front counter just angrily handed me over the bag and walked away to the back without attending my friend. So we stood there twiddling our thumbs until my friend spoke up and they reluctantly came to the front. Granted, my friend and I perhaps are TOO cheerful in the morning…… well, lies! There's no such thing as being too cheerful- are you alive and well? So be cheerful dammit!

WHATEVER. The cookies were good. The place is small. The lady was mean. My friend had a piece of the cherry & cheese strudel. I didn't try it so I can't comment on it… but it was $6.

It wasn't until after I realized that they have another location in my neighborhood on the UES- one I've actually visited. If I had to choose I'd definitely choose the UES location. Cozier– it's a sit down place & the customer service is MUCH better.

But if you live in the area– give this place a try! Especially those cookies. They were super fresh (it was 9:30AM) and paired perfectly with my crappy Starbucks iced coffee.
