Areperia Arepa Lady

“I'm so lucky I don't live in Queens because I would be there all day, every day (and 30lbs heavier).”

“The crispy buttered shell, the soft fluffy interior, and he perfect amount of goodness within (choclo or just queso).”

“Patacones con chicharron: pretty much the way you'd expect chicharron to be…”

  1. This place is a damn tasty little gem. Super small, very friendly, and delicious food. I had a mango shake, which was awesome, especially considering I'm not a huge fan of mangoes as a fruit. I was there around 4ish on a Saturday and it was very quiet and intimate. I will definitely be back to try more of their menu!

  2. Some of the tastiest arepas you'll find in New York City. The arepa de chocolo is a must-try, made of fresh ground corn that has this lovely crispiness on the outside and soft, fluffy texture on the inside. Each arepa is served with cheese and butter and the restaurant offers a variety of tasty sauces. Here are some options that I highly recommend:

    *arepa de chocolo with chorizo
    *arepa de chocolo with chicken
    *chicharron

I really like the atmosphere of this place, it's small but I love the hipster feel that this place provides. The service here was fantastic, the waitress was so polite and our food came out quick. Definitely a must try!

*Try not to bring a large group of people here or else seating may be difficult.

  3. Ok this place has only one thing for vegetarians (and nothing for vegans) but if you're into cheese, their cheese stuffed corn arepas are mouthwateringly good. And $5.

  4. I know I'm Filipino, but can the Arepa Lady actually adopt me?

Super accommodating service, and some of the most interesting combinations of carbs, meat and cheese. This totally redefined any of my percieved notions of Queens food culture.

  5. Yes, yes, and yes to this place! Aside from the variety of amazing arepas and sauces, the staff were inviting/wholesome and its byob! BYOB definitely makes up for the higher prices in food items. If it's your first time, you should try the arepa de queso and arepa de chocolo. I can't say enough how friendly and fun the staff at the restaurant and I dig the modern ambience too.

  6. Absolutely delicious arepas! I highly recommend the queso arepa mixed (with all different kinds of meat like beef, chorizo, pork, chicken, etc.). The cornmeal bread was cheesy and very filling. I was surprised how big the arepas actually are; we only managed to finish one each (plus I brought some of mine back to devour later).

The empanadas were very good, along with accompanying sauces (pineapple, hot, garlic and pink sauce). The pink sauce seemed like a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise and it was personally my favorite sauce. I dipped the arepas with the sauce, along with the empanadas and chorizo (which came with avocado and fried plantains – also highly recommended).

The soursop drink was interesting and good, especially with the milk base. I tried the blackberry drink (water-based) but I did not like it that much. I could see the smoothie particles and water did not mix together and it tasted a bit off.

The place is cash-only and has limited seating (only about 6 tables). We had to wait for a table to finish their meal and leave. There is also no waiting area except outside or a tiny area by the entrance and restroom. We came around 7:30 pm, with no reservation.

We will definitely come back for the arepas. The service was very efficient and friendly. The arepas were so filling that we did not feel hungry at all until the next day (usually I get hungry late at night or early in the morning).

  7. In the midst of the first New York snowstorm, my boyfriend decided to come here for a meal for his birthday. We trekked from Astoria to The Arepa Lady in our snowboots for some Colombian food. The things I do for him! :-p

    Things I ordered/tried:

    Arepa Rellena
    Pollo Demechada Patacon
    Flan

Everything was really filling and delicious. I especially loved the atmosphere they've created. It feels like you're eating at someone's home that you've been going to for years. Or maybe I was just feeling extra cozy because of the snow! There aren't that many tables (3 or 4?) so keep that in mind when you show up with a group.

  8. After recently visiting Colombia, I was in a desperate search for authentic arepas con chocolo in NYC. The owners here are from Medellin!

As soon as we walked in, the staff was super friendly and welcomed us inside. There's SO many different types of arepas, so make sure to do your research beforehand and ask the staff for recommendations.

If it's your first time, I would highly recommend getting the mini arepas ($7) vs one regular arepa (~$8). I got to try three different ones (cheese, steak, and chorizo). Really enjoyed them all! The garlic sauce and hot sauce balanced out the sweetness of the corn nicely.

Since we only ordered arepas con chocolo, one of the staff members kindly gave us a mini arepa con queso to try. With the condensed milk, it was so tasty.

Please do not leave without trying the fresh juices here. The passion fruit and lula were my favorite.

Overall, would highly recommend this place. 4.5/5.
