Artopolis

“On the regular day it's a little more expensive, but this is Morningside Heights in NYC which in that standard the price is very justifiable.”

“I love the decor and the music as well, plus the outdoor seating is very quaint during the warmer months.”

“My most favorite cafe/hang-out place in the Columbia University Nabe –
great pastries, great coffee, great service!!!”

  1. 12PM, starve to death. Gotta get out and have some breakfast.
114 street, a small board with its name on.

At first I didn't noticed the "wait for table service" sign. I ordered a breakfast combo at the cashier and I told her for 3 times I want it here. I believe she repeated "to go"till the last time. Then i noticed the "table service" sign, and I waited and waited until the guy finally noticed me.

I asked my server if I need to order something else and she said no. Then she asked the guy and told me I have to. I added a strawberry banana crips.

My breakfast were decent. The combo (sausage, potato, egg crumble) was actually a wrap cut in half. The wrap was crispy and inside were hot and flavored. Quite nice Id say. Crepes was standard. Creams on both sides.

  2. After walking past this place countless times, I had time to kill this morning and I decided to finally go in. I treated myself to a nice breakfast burrito and an iced chai (which they made blended and I think everyone prefers and enjoys blended drinks more). Although they had a variety of options to choose from: bakery treats, crepes, salads, and sandwiches…

I was surprised at how much seating there was. It isn't common for cafes in these parts to have an ample amount of seating. There is outdoor seating and indoor seating so you have an option in that as well. Inside there is a large TV with news on in the background (but on silent) and there was a Frank Sinatra tune playing in the background. It was quite at about 9:30am but I often see people going around happy hour and enjoying a drink out on the patio.

It seemed clean in general and the staff was friendly. The food was tasty and filling. I only took issue with the chai being a spiced chai. I hate spiced chai and prefer vanilla chai but that was really my fault for not asking about it. Other than that, no complaints here. I wouldn't mind going back in the future.

  3. Good prices for a place near Columbia University. The banana nutella strawberry crepe was very generous on the ingredients. Wished the crepe was a bit crispier.

Omelette and sausage crepe was tasty but not quite salty enough. Needed something a little more. The potatoes it came with were on the soggy side of crispy.

The house blend coffee was drinkable but nothing to write home about.

All in all a decent place for brunch that won't break the bank.

  4. When one of my girlfriends and I made plans to meet up for coffee over the weekend, she told me she would be coming from Washington Heights.  Since I would be heading over from the UES, I suggested we meet up in Morningside Heights as mid-way point.  I also was in the mood to stop by Book Culture and hadn't been up that way in a while.

The afternoon was full of girl talk, and Artopolis was a great place for us to catch up.  She had a Nutella and fruit smoothie which she let me try.  As a fan of chocolate-covered fruits (though I am not a big fruit eater otherwise), I thought it was delicious.  I had a strained Greek yogurt parfait with walnuts and a drizzle of honey, and was rather craving it for dinner tonight, but it seemed foolish to go that far out of my way in the middle of a thunderstorm.  My Americano was great also–clearly, good espresso was used.

I would suggest, however, that Artopolis have more gluten-free dessert options–it's such an adorable bakery/cafe/creperie/bar, and both my friend and I try to avoid eating gluten but would have loved to sample some of those pretty sweets.

  5. I don't understand why this place got such low reviews. I understand that the service is sometimes slow here, but I've never had a bad experience.

I would come here all the time when I lived in this neighborhood. They had pretty delicious crepes that I would order with a coffee.  They have an awesome brunch deal where you get your coffee with your meal between certain hours. They have outdoor seating, which is really nice in the summer time. It also never gets too busy, so you'll always have a seat outside or inside booth.

I also found it was quite enough to journal or read a book. I've even brought my computer to do work here because they have free wifi if you ask for it. I think people need to try it before they are quick to judge about this place.

  6. Wide selection of pastries, desserts, and decent coffee! Lots of flavors, but I just went with the original house blend. PS. They keep milk , cream, soy milk, and sugar on the side in Keurig-looking dispensers, if that saves you any trouble.
They have plenty of seating so if you like you can wait to be seated (indoor or outdoor).

  7. After a filling meal nearby, walked to this place to check out the wide variety of baked goods. Lots of seating inside and not crowded on a Saturday afternoon.

Since it was a generally nice day out, decided to get a medium Nutella Latte and a walnut brownie to go (total $6ish). The latte had a nice balance between the sweet hazelnut chocolate and the bitter coffee. The drink wasn't that strong however, so didn't keep me awake for as long as I would have liked. The brownie had a soft cake base with a whipped frosting – went well with the drink.

Considering the dearth of bakery options in the area; this spot is fine for your sugar fix.

  8. This place serves food, drinks, coffee, and bakeries. The coffee is average. But it's a good place to sit down and chat over drinks. They have happy hours, for $5 drinks. Every time I'm here for food, I always order veggie selection omelette with goat cheese and zucchini. It's pretty good. You can also choose to make it crepe. For a bit $10, it comes with salad/potato, and regular coffee/tea. The crepe selection is wide, including both savory and sweet. It's a decent place to eat near columbia.
