B. Cafe West

“The frites seem to be fried twice, which I'm told makes for better fries, and the dipping sauces are excellent.”

“For these reasons, B. Cafe has become my new favorite spot on the UWS to meet friends after work or before a movie.”

“Downside: You only get to chose from 2 of the like 6 mussel varieties they offe, and thers only 1 draft option (Palm beer which is delicious).”

  1. A great upper west side restaurant! They had plenty of beer choices. I had the Framboise which was a crispy raspberry tasting beer. I did the chicken sandwich for dinner, it was great!! Also… They give you both french fries AND a salad!! How amazing. The staff was great and attentive, I really enjoyed my time here.

  2. My friends recommended B Café West for a brunch get together.  Since they are usually pretty interested in food, I trusted their opinion, but this time they were sorely mistaken.  Upon my arrival, I thought that this place looked like some typical neighborhood lunch spot with little character or quality, and I pretty much judged that book by its cover.

The service was slow and not very friendly.  My "coffee" was more like brown water with no substance or depth of flavor.  The Norwegian Salad was a great portion size and included mixed greens, smoked salmon, avocado, cucumber, poached egg, and grapes.  This odd combination was reasonably tasty, but nothing overly memorable.  The highlight of the experience had to be the sampling of my friend's crispy, salty French fries, which were accompanied by a trip of dipping sauces – mayo, ketchup, and a spicy samurai sauce (essentially a feisty blend of the other two condiments).

Not to sound like a food snob or anything…but next time we decide to hold a group brunch, I will plan to suggest something more gourmet.  Serving flavorless coffee, especially during brunch, was just a deal breaker for me…

  3. Had a really nice dinner here with a few friends! I had the club sandwich with roasted duck breast and would HIGHLY recommend. It came with a side of fries (I'd recommend ordering one of the sandwiches so that you can try the fries, they're excellent) and a side salad. Sandwiches and entrees lean pricier but portions are very generous.

  4. Enjoyed a delicious brunch here over Memorial Day weekend. I have had B Cafe on my list of places to try, and finally did!

They have outdoor seating, and a very intimate dining area inside plus a smaller bar with can seat about 6 people. I wanted to sit outside, but it was so hot so we got seated inside. They have a really good brunch menu. Belgium waffles, eggs, savory items and of course mussels!! My boyfriend got the Belgium waffles and they came with a side of vanilla ice cream and chocolate dipping sauce. He devoured it. I went with the egg sandwich in a baguette with gruyere cheese and avocado on the side. It was AMAZING.  It was a little on the greasy side, but assuming it had to do with the amount of cheese which I am not complaining about. My sandwich came with fries and they were equally as amazing. I will be back to try more and for the intimate setting.

  5. I always order the moules frites.  It never disappoints.   Interesting selection of European beers. Do not order the waffles.  It is tiny and dry.

  6. All you can eat mussels for happy hour! Need I say more? For $25 per person, you get a bowl of mussels in either wine, tomato and garlic broth or just wine broth (AYCE), a bottle of palm and fries. I wish the broth is a little less tomato-y…. After the first round, you must pay extra for the drinks and fries. You can get full just eating mussels alone, trust me. The beast in me could barely finish 2 pots. Dip the bread into the broth! You won't regret it, I promise. The raspberry limbic is yummy. I need to come back and taste more of their selection.

  7. My friend and I came here for a couple of brews and a late dinner Saturday, and it hit the spot!

Opting to sit at the bar, we started out our meal with a round of drinks. I ordered a glass of the Framboise Lambic, and she ordered a glass of the Hoegaarden. We then continued with a share of the fish and chips, which was surprisingly good! The fish was ample and not at all over-cooked, and the fries were tasty. I also ordered a Hoegaarden to accompany my portion of the meal.

The bartender was helpful in choosing beers, and we were able to sample some before deciding. All in all, it was a pleasant evening out.

  8. Went with a friend a few nights ago and had a wonderful dining experience. The establishment is dimly lit – romantic if you're on a date but it could definitely work for big parties as well.

Our server was very attentive and answered all questions that I had. I ordered the lemon sauteed salmon which was unbelievably delicious. Growing up in a household that tends to make all meats WELL DONE, I was initially perturbed by the salmon's preparation as it seemed undercooked to me.  I've eaten salmon sushi before so in retrospect it was just my neuroticism about the preparation of meat/fish, but regardless the waiter prompty informed me that this was the chef's typical preparation (he also said the chef would be happy to cook it a bit longer if I preferred) and I went on my merry way (I didn't send it back – there truly was nothing wrong with it).

My friend also loved her food. I believe she got a chicken sandwich, if that helps anyone who is wondering about what to order. Though neither of us opted for mussels, this place is famous for them so when I go back I'm certainly giving them a try – the tables on either side of us were both eating them (and they come with a generous portion of fries!)
