  1. I seem to have a habit of going to weekday lunch places on weekends so … not a typical review here.

I yelped for the closest cheap place to grab a bite after walking the Brooklyn Bridge, and this place came up.  It looks like it is a popular lunch spot for people who work in the area (from reviews), but when I walked in on a Saturday, it was empty. She took my order quickly, gave me my heaping pile of food, and went back to hanging out with the other guy  near the window. I kind of wish they'd been sitting somewhere else because I wanted to sit there and people watch alone, but whatevs. This is one of those places that gives you QUANTITY.  $6 for a huge plate of rice with generous chicken (none of that "three dinky pieces you can barely find") and a bunch of lentils and vegetables.  Plenty of sauce, which I always appreciate, and everything was pretty good tasting, if not fantastic.  They have pitches of water out which were a godsend after my walk, and they didn't care one whit whether I was filling up my water bottle or my cup.

It's honestly too much not-great food to finish for a person like me so I picked out all the chicken and some of the vegetables. Serviceable for those days when you're hungry but don't want empty starch.

  2. This place is bangin'!  It is definitely the best Indian joint in the area, hands down.

For the value ($6), they can do no wrong.  Chicken, rice, potatoes, lentils… piled on and piled high.  Last time I went was this past Saturday afternoon, which I would assume would have been a slow day; however the food was still piping hot and fresh (they didn't need to nuke it up for me, big surprise actually).  Also, their food has a spicy bite to it, unlike a few of the other Indian joints in the area.

For quick friendly service, good value, and tasty food… 5 stars… boom.

  3. Hole in the wall right next to the ACE train in FiDi.

The prices are rock bottom cheap. Platters are between $5-$6, steam table style. They are also open a lot later than other places in the area.
The food looks good and it is rotated often, naan is made the way it should be…to order.

But how disappointing, this food is horrifically under-spiced. No salt, no pepper, no curry, no nothing. Don't be fooled by the cheap prices. Spend a few extra bucks elsewhere and get something that actually tastes…like something!

Sorry Bangal Curry, I gave you two tries. As GWB would say: fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice…can't get fooled again.

  4. Looking for a spot to eat after shopping in Century 21 til closing, a lot of food establishments were already closed.  But lo and behold we stumbled upon Bangal Curry, looking at the menu the prices were from $7 to $9 for a huge plate of food.  My mind was quickly made up and soon enough we were ordering our late night meal.  My friend got the chicken tikka masala with rice and two sides (spinach and beans) while I got the chicken curry.

The portion is humongous and the food was good.  It is not the best quality food, but for the price I have no complaints.  I liked my friend's food better, the chicken tikka masala was flavorful and I ended up eating his food more than mine.

It is cheap, fast, huge portion of food available late at night.  It doesn't hurt my pocket and goes down smoothly in my mouth.  Not the best ambiance and the food is microwaved, but I do have a soft spot for curry.

  5. Shockingly good cheap Desi street eats in Tribeca.

I was starving, got off the train at 5:45 pm, had a 6 pm meeting and sought the first quick spot that (presumably) had food with spice.

I ordered the fish bhuna with cabbage, bhindi (okra) and rice. The *best* part was the hot lime pickle achar that they gave me to accompany my meal (I had to ask for it). The portion was HUGE and my dinner was $6. Did you hear that? SIX DOLLARS. In TriBeCa.

When I arrived to my meeting, my food smelled so good that a colleague asked to share. I'm so glad she did because, to reiterate, the portions were huge and there was no way I could have finished my meal (my pet peeve is wasting food).

  6. This is a very decent place to get a lower cost, non-fast food lunch while in downtown NYC.  The service was good and I especially liked the vegetables they had-a number of different types.

Tiny place but they pack it up very nicely to let you take it back to your desk at work.

  7. I am giving this place 3 stars because it doesn't have a bathroom and also because they heat up their food in a microwave and honestly my food and tea were lukewarm. It is clean and a nice atmosphere. The staff is nice and helpful. The food is good but it is spicy.. But I like spicy. My plate was $7 and as you can see by the picture it was a lot. And when I asked for spinach she offered me some cabbage too. Which I am not a fan of cabbage but I decided to try it and their cabbage was good. Nice place but not open too late closes at 10 pm.

  8. While waiting for my order of "Tandoori chicken curry" to be reheated in the microwave, I pondered a sign placed in the middle of my table. It offered, in Spanish, a special discount on the purchase of a Coke when combined with a burrito or taco. The actual promotional price was blank, unfortunately all beverages here are full price. Some even come from the Pepsi Corporation.

Even if was given free, I wondered why this small Bengali restaurant was giving free promotion to Coke. Perhaps it was simply to focus the attention of visiting guests. I don't think Tandoori chicken curry is an actual thing, whether in West Bengal or Bangladesh, but what they served me was a solid plate of chicken over a heaping plate of basmati rice. With a (Diet) Coke and daal, it came to $9, not matter for something that could have easily been finished for lunch the next day.

While I wish the steam table had enough volume that food didn't have to be reheat, the end result was satisfactory enough.
