  1. Came here and had the pre-fixe dinner. Thought I couldn't go wrong for $19.95.

To start, the service is not great. Waiters cut me off several times while I was speaking and practically ignored us when our glasses of water were empty. We had to flag them down for our check too and skipped dessert because they were taking too long.

The food was okay. Not terrible but on the bland side. The pre-fixe came with an appetizer, entree and dessert. For the appetizer, I selected the samosa. It was very bland- if you told me it was filled with mashed potatoes, I would have believed you because the innards were completely flavorless.
For my entree, I ordered the Goat Curry which comes with rice and my husband ordered the Chicken Curry which also comes with rice. They only served us one rice and told us if we wanted the additional rice, to let them know. YES I WOULD LIKE THE RICE THAT COMES WITH MY DINNER. The curries were fine- the chicken was a little on the dry side.
    The naan was very good.
Husband ordered Roti which came crispy… (tho, in Basera's defense, husband was expecting Carribbean Roti which is not the same thing).

None of us suffered food poisoning or anything (the food is just VERY BLAND) but the service here really sucked- and the restaurant was not even at half capacity.

  2. At first, this place may not look like your fancy Indian restaurant, but the food they serve makes up for the decor. Located on Hell's Kitchen, Basera's menu boasts of a an array of fish, chicken, lamb and vegetarian gravies. We had Paneer korma and Chicken Makhani with Garlic n plain naan. The entrees are served with rice which is a descent portion size. However, the staff needs to be a bit polite n not lose their patience while taking orders.

  3. After reading all the mixed reviews ,I had decided to find out for myself,so before heading to our Show on Broadway 2 of my friends and myself decided on pre theatre dinner and decided as well to try Basera Indian Bistro. Our experience was just so so ,we wanted to sit at a certain table and asked politely, the waiter in return was actually quite rude and answered with an attitude that all the tables placed in the middle of the Restaurant were reserved. We understood ,but he could have been nicer about it.the food itself was just ok nothing really to rave about. We all ordered diffirent dishes so we could compare, the halibut was dry,the chicken tandoori was dry as well, the best dish was the chicken tikka masala. The service is not the best and needs some improvement.I am not sure that I can recommend this restaurant to anyone really!!!

  4. Decent option with all the typical Northern Indian entrees one would expect (plus beef which was really, really weird for us). I think the taste was there for most of the dishes but several of the meats were overcooked. Also, note that "spicy" means "Indian spicy" here.

The standout was the tandoori chicken which was actually quite wonderful. They also make some really tasty cocktails. We probably wouldn't go back because there are so many other options in the area, but this one is fine and also a bargain if you order their $20 pre fixe menu.

  5. I've never visited the actual location but always order lunch from here. Usually, the lunch is delicious. My favorites are the eggplant and spinach veggie lunch specials for $9.95.

I wish they were more flexible with their orders. Naan comes with your food, but I've asked multiple times if I can skip the naan and pay a bit more to get the paratha instead, and they always say no.

Also, while their food is good, I had the okra veggie lunch special today, and it was a a great disappointment.

  6. The food was highly disappointing. A typical flavorless Indian restaurant that is common in NYC and throughout the USA. This is Indian cuisine for the generic palate.  That means it is stripped of its soul and authenticity.  The Chicken Tikka Masala is an embarrassment – it tastes like a generic tomato sauce. There is no zip, no spice. We ordered our dishes 'spicy' but there was no spice to be found.

The only good thing I can say about this place is that the service was good and friendly. The setting is very dark and unattractive. A waste of a dinner and surprised by the positive reviews.  Avoid this place.

  7. Came here in the summer. They blast the A/C – not exactly something I want to be noticing or worrying about when enjoying a meal.
Service was attentive and didn't hover. Decor inside is clean, plays indian music and music videos on flatscreens around the walls.
I got the chicken tikka masala and a mango lhassi. Naan was delicious and there was a LOT of sauce in the tikka which I appreciated.

I did notice, however, that a couple who came in shortly after I did took forever to get their food. While I was paying the bill and leaving, they still hadn't gotten appetizers and were complaining to the server (and there were 4-5 people maximum in the restaurant). Leaves a bad taste in my mouth to see inconsistent service.

  8. I've been here a handful of occasions, I'm happy to report the food & service were both fantastic and consistent. The meals I've had here were above average! The first time we stumbled upon this joint was after an off Broadway show. I was definitely surprised to find an affordable indian restaurant in this neighborhood, let alone delicious food. I'm used to going to the east village or Brooklyn for my south asian fix. The decor isn't much to write about but the food is good enough to write home to mom (she likes Indian food too). They have a fair selection of vegan items on their vegetarian list and can make the naan without butter, excellent! I'll be sure to come back the next time I'm around the area. This is a solid choice for delicious Indian food!
