Baumgart’s Cafe

“Not your typical asian restaurant setting, which makes it fun, not to mention they have great dessert.”

“This place is a Bergen County institution, and I see it's become a small chain in North Jersey with several other locations.”

“After all that settled it was time for the superstar dish, the main attraction, my favorite item on the menu, the crispy sesame chicken.”

  1. ONLY CAME HERE FOR DESSERT

What an awesomely designed place, I love the idea you could come to a 1950's diner and get a traditional ice cream sundae with malt and get a sashimi platter…so cool

We got a sundae with vanilla, hot fudge, and malt, it was great, not pricey and big enough for 2 people. the ice cream is top notch too.

I WILL BE BACK HERE FOR DINNER

  2. I've been going to the location in Ridgewood, NJ for quite some time now and when I discovered they have a location in Englewood, NJ I was very happy because I can now get my sushi fix when I'm working. I have yet to actually step foot in the actual restaurant but I can tell you that the delivery is very quick and efficient. They have my favorite sushi roll the Crunchy Florida Roll which is crab stick, avacado, a small sliver of lime and these little crunchy things Very refreshing. I also get a side of spicy mayo on the side to spice things up a bit. The sushi is a bit over priced I feel they average from $13-15 for fancy rolls. They also have very good sesame chicken that  I really enjoy eating with its crispy exterior and accompanied with broccoli and white rice pretty reasonable for the lunch special at $9.99. I have also tried their ice cream at the Ridgewood location and it is amazing and homemade. I would go just for the ice cream

  3. This place tries to do too much, and outside of their ice cream, not much of it is good.

Another reviewer wrote "Surprise! Its a Chinese restaurant!" and he was right. It does not look like a Chinese place at all from the outside.  They also have a lot of american diner type food available too. Their menu is really all over the place. Chinese/american/ice cream parlor what?

I had the BLT and my friend had the pork fried rice. The BLT was OK but really I could have made a better BLT at home. The rice was really bland, I had to douse it in siracha sauce so I could taste it. Their pricing is asking a lot for the quality of the food you get. Sure the portions are big but why would I want a larger portion of bad food?

The only reason this place is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is that their ice cream is pretty good. At least they got that right.

  4. Weird weird weird.

It's such a strange place.  I really didn't want to come here.  I was forced.

My gf insisted I get the broccoli salad. EH

We got an order, I wished we had ordered another.  It was amazing.

For an entree I ordered steamed veggies with shrimp.  All great.

    Service was also excellent.

    I would come back.

My only disappointment was it's not as old as it looks lol

  5. Basically your all-in-one stop diner with milkshakes, Asian dishes, sandwiches, and breakfast items.  My stir fry was on-par with takeout but I appreciated being able to order a nice egg cream in the same place.  Portion sizes are decent and this is one of the landmarks of EC.  They only accept American Express and cash so make sure you have one of those on hand.

  6. Not a bad place near my office.

I suppose the most unusual aspect of this place is how it looks like an old-time American eatery – but once you walk in it turns out this place is a Chinese restaurant with a (somewhat odd) fusion menu.

I tried the BLT here before and it was fine.  Nothing that screams amazing and is comparable to the quality of food I get over at Tenafly diner.  My friend tried the dumplings and he seemed to like it but didn't really gush over it.  In the future we'll definitely consider coming back to explore more of the menu – but if you're looking for a relatively solid place with a fusion menu this isn't a bad choice if you're in the area.

  7. I'm a fan of the edgewater location, but while I appreciate a large menu with various ethnic offerings, the execution wasn't what I had hoped for.  The food was very "Meh", which is the standard description of Yelp's two-star rating.

I'm kinda liking the diner decor of the place, but diner decor does not equal diner prices either.

  8. So wonderful to see this place still open!  It still maintains the feel of a diner. It still serves ice cream and milkshakes. However, now it has diversified into Asian cuisine. I had something called a "New Jersey roll."  –see photo –was not bad for Englewood NJ!  But the prize was the bacon cheeseburger with a milkshake (see photo); attempted by my 80 year-old mother but finished by me !!!. Bumgarts  is an eclectic place with a fun 50s diner ambience;  complete with rock around the clock and Beatles playing on their audio system.  Service was OK. Food was good. I would write it in the category of fun places to go if you are visiting or having guests in Englewood.
