Good for the proprietor to play the one-time only/no repeat clients for me crowd. After all, midtown is bringing in tons of one-time national and international tourists and (giddy after an inbound red-eye from either Zanesville or Zimbabwe) they're just raring to get their first real NY deli experience behind them once they drop their bags in the room(s).
Interior is nice. Service is good. Food quality is fine. The three stars here simply focuses on the copious amount of gall this establishment has in pricing a hot dog at $15.00. At pricing Mac n' Cheese at $18.00. At pricing a Waffle House (Respek, yo') omelette at $19.00.
Total Caveat Emptor here.
But, again, I tip my hat at the unscrupulous management banking on the folly of their ways.
By way of analogy… Our meal last night at Pazza Notte was $4.36 more.
So… Yes… Shame on us for being so easily bilked here. Way to go Ben Ash! Another "one-time-only" guest notched on your bartop!
I made the mistake of going here without checking yelp reviews first. I wanted a quick easy breakfast and stumbled upon Ben Ash and thought it fit the bill. Unfortunately it was terrible. The service was awful, I requested adding spinach to my omelet and was told that they didn't make any Changes from the menu. It look my coworker asking 3 times to get water refilled and overall was a bad experience. Keep walking right past this place onto one of the much better options close by!
Yuk. The husband got steak and eggs. He said the steak was grade D canning meat. I agree it looked gross.
I got the lox and eggs which actually were OK.
We had a nice waitress, but the food was not exceptional.
This place is great. They were friendly and welcoming at the door. I felt like I was in a neighborhood eatery. Everyone was nice, glad I enjoyed my cheesecake, and service was timely. Everyone appears happy working there. They also appear to have been employed there for a while.
Now, about my slice of cheesecake! It was so creamy and not too sweet. I think it's got Junior's beat hands down. If you like your cheesecake on the slightly lighter side, this ones for you. I wasn't left with a sickening sweet taste in my mouth. I am not sure the flavor of what I had. He said it was Reese's, Butterfingers, or Snickers?? I really don't think he got the name right. It didn't matter. The flavored part was just along the top. It did have a tiny bit of fruit taste which I'm not a fan of. The actual cheesecake part made up for everything. Creamy and went down smooth.
They have plenty of seating. From the looks of the food I saw they give huge portions. I'm going back for lunch! They take credit cards too. They also have a bar.
I'll definitely be back to try another flavor of cheesecake. It would be great when I'm in the mood for chocolate. They have a German Chocolate flavor of Cheesecake.
A slice will set you back $10.89 with the tax. It was well worth it!!
We walked in after a play about 11 pm. Quaint. Not fancy. Had good, fast service. Had the cabbage roll appetizer. Delicious. Was huge, enough for a meal. The cheesecake was also good. Our water glasses were refilled. The place totally satisfied us.
I was hoping to go to the Carnegie Deli across the street only to discover it's been closed due to some gas line scandal. So I look around and choose this place, right across the street. I wish I picked the place next door instead.
Service, unlike many reviewers, was friendly enough. The guy tried hard. Issue was it was near midnight and they kept mopping and mopping around my table with the smelly mop-water. Please, next time, segregate the eating and mopping areas.
Food, however, like many reviews was a fail. Worst pastrami I've had in NYC. Worst pickle (is that possible) as well.
#avoid. There are way, way too many good options to come here.
Stopped in here for a snack after Central Park, had 2 pieces of cheesecake and an order of the cabbage rolls. My wife *really* liked the cabbage rolls. The cheesecake was just OK, very light and creamy, not overly sweet, but I expected a little more flavor to the raspberry-lemon piece. The service was OK, but the place was almost deserted, so the wait staff didn't have a lot to do.
Nothing to make the place stand out from the nearby competition, hence the 3-star rating.
The cheesecake was pretty good. We got a slice to share and three people had enough to split. The price is ridiculous, $10 is insane for a slice. Other people complain about the food, service, and everything in between – so we won't be returning for those reasons. The cheesecake is fluffy and taste nice, but way over priced, even for NY.
