Bombay Masala

“Located near multiple train lines and in the heart of Times Square, you really couldn't ask for a better location.”

“For NYC it's not the flashiest place around, but I'd recommended it to anyone looking for some good Indian food around Time Square.”

“It was nice surprise to see that this place was family owned and the food was good, similar to what we'd get in Jackson Heights.”

  1. I went for the lunch buffet.  The selection was pretty limited, but fairly tasty.  I've been to better Indian buffets, but if you're in Times Square, apparently your Indian dining options are limited.  If you need all you can eat protien, this is a fairly inexpensive place to get it.

  2. Bombay Masala serves your standard Indian buffet: goat curry, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka masala, palak paneer, basmati rice and naan. This is a good place for a decent Midtown lunch – no lines, fast and affordable.

  3. They are located in the heart of Time Square, nothing fancy about this place, but the location is just perfect and convenient to public transportation.

We ordered lamb vindaloo and tandoori shrimp. Superb!

Their serving portion is filling, tasty, and the presentation was on point.

The staffing was nice and friendly.

Only thing is I would recommend they have some serious renovation.

  4. This place is everything that I don't expect from an Indian restaurant. Situated in such a fantastic location, the place is dingy, dated and needs a major makeover. The food is below average and literally burns a hole in your pocket with tasteless gravies priced at $18-$20 per dish. However the waitstaff was hospitable and courteous. Not a good place to relish the amazing flavours of Indian cuisine.

  5. I've never had any food allergies till date but got a bad allergic reaction to some ingredient in their preparation. Our friends from India were visiting the US after 12 years so we met them up at Times Square. They felt like eating Indian food for dinner, so we looked up options in the area and this one showed up in the listings. Too bad I didn't check the yelp reviews for this place.

Upon arriving at the restaurant, I was personally hesitant to eat here looking at the dingy flight of stairs but gathered a little nerve looking at the restaurant inspection score of "A" that was displayed prominently at the door. Everyone in our group was tired and none of us felt like walking any further, so we ended up dining here.

To begin with, the service was extremely bad. We asked for water when the waiter arrived with the menus and he said he'll be right back and disappeared for a few minutes. He returned back only to ask what we wanted to eat. We reminded him of the water and placed the order for appetizers. He came back after 5 minutes with the water and also said that they were out of the soup. We said it is fine and he can cancel the soup order and just bring the rest of the appetizers and went on to place the order for the main course.

He came back after 5 minutes saying that they had a minimum per person and it meant that we order another item for the main course. Quite ridiculous but ok if that's what it takes you to bring us dinner. We placed an order for another entrée.

The pakoras arrived in a few minutes. Quite greasy and lukewarm. Seemed like they made a big batch in the AM and they just reheated the platter and didn't do a good job out of that either.

Our main course wasn't anything to write home about either. Everything seemed reheated except for the rotis and parathas.

Three hours later I was scratching my ear which I thought it must be an insect bite. A few more hours later, my face was swollen with what seemed like urticaria. Went to the doctor the next day and he confirmed that it was an allergic reaction to food. Given the fact that we didn't eat anywhere else that evening, it was easy to narrow down to the source.

  6. Didn't want to spend a hundred bucks at the city lobster place across street so we chose this place.  The eatery is upstairs.  Had to send back tandoori chicken that was burnt and seemed like old meat.  Soup had a layer of grease on it and unseasoned.  The veggie korma was delicious as was the naan and rice.  The raita was loaded with sugar, unnecessarily so.  The staff were attentive but didn't understand  English very well nor did I know their language.  The bathroom was small and clean.  The people watching out a large front window overlooking the street was great. Too pricey!!!!!

  7. Wow … I cannot believe this second experience I had with Bombay Masala.  I've dined here before and had only chai while my coworkers dined and had their lunch specials.   I came back in hoping for the same experience when in the mood for chai one week later and they basically threw us out bc I wasn't ordering an actual meal and only wanted the chai.

Now I understand why this place received such bad reviews.  Never coming back here!

  8. Bombay Masala has a typical Indian lunch buffet. Buffet consisted of basmati rice, chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, goat curry, mixed vegetable curry and spniach paneer.

Everything was not that spicy and tasted pretty good. The restaurant was not that busy, so it was perfect for our group of ten.
Definitely not the best, but a safe lunch option if you're in the Midtown area.
