  1. A cake lover's dream! Every cake imaginable! How long they've been sitting there and how fresh they are, I don't know. I asked the hostess, but she didn't know either. Kind of disorganized. I asked someone for a table and she said ok, but walked away without giving me one. Eventually, the hostess emerged and I asked her for a table and she gave me one. Service is slow and they don't seem to care a great deal about the customers. The mint chocolate cake I ordered was pretty good, but at almost $9 a pop, this is more of a once in awhile indulgence than an everyday treat.

Second time there, and service was still crappy. They really need to do something about that. Doesn't seem like waitresses have designated tables. Everyone kind of just does their own thing, at a snail's pace, I might add. Ordered the fresh fruit supreme, which was light and perfect for a warm summer night. However, the cake is almost exactly like the Chinese fruit cakes with yellow cake sandwiching cream and fruit. Chinese fruit cakes will cost like $9 for the entire cake and the one at Lalo costs $9 for a slice. Overpriced.

  2. All I had to say is "You've Got Mail". Came here just for that reason and it was a bonus that their food was great too!

  3. I've been trying to make it to Cafe Lalo ever since I moved to NYC, and finally went on Sunday.  Despite my excitement, I tried to keep my expectations in check.

We arrived around 12:30 on a Sunday for brunch.  The location is really cute and the place itself is open and bright.  The restaurant was about half full so we were seated immediately.

The menu is GIGANTIC (past the point of "overwhelming" and heading towards "high school calculus textbook") but the brunch page is creative and fun.  You can order various styles of brunch including French, Dutch, etc.  Two members of my party opted for the British breakfast, one ordered a grilled cheese, and I chose the Italian breakfast.

The Italian breakfast was good- it was steamed eggs with tomatoes over goat cheese, served with an olive twist and a small olive side salad.  Everything was just fine.  The coffee was good too- they served it with a piece of Lindt chocolate on the side.  The servers were nice too.

All in all, I enjoyed brunch; it was very standard.  Everything was good although nothing was particularly memorable.  Would definitely consider going back with a group, and would considering upping the rating if I try dessert next time.  Was certainly not disappointed.

  4. Mmmmm – if you can't find pie to die for at this place – then there is something seriously wrong with you!!!
Banana cream pie, coconut cream pie and the lemon meringue is all delicious.
We stayed right upstairs – and made great use of the location to pie test!!

  5. Cute little cafe from the movie " You've got mail" . The place is busy . I had German Chocolate Cake and cappuccino my friend ordered Chocolate Mint Cake and iced cappuccino. The waitress was to busy and didn't pay attention to us so someone else helped us with the check.

  6. I would give this place 3.5 stars if I could but I am just putting 4 stars because I am a huge fan of the dessert. I was disappointed with the customer service I received. I went there to get some slices of cake to go. I had to wait at the counter for a little while even though the cashier was right there and there was no line. The service wasn't friendly and I expected a slightly better reception. I would still come back here because their strawberry shortcake is still really good. Just don't expect a warm welcome if you come in to buy something or if you decide to eat in.

  7. We were wandering around the upper west side one day and happened upon this place.
Who can resist the call of delicious looking desserts?
My husband was still hungry for real food so we split a sandwich and a dessert along with our cocktails.
The menu was surprisingly meat-void (with the exception of fish), but that was ok. We ended up splitting the Avocado & Bulgarian Feta Cheese sandwich on sourdough and it was amazing. I don't know what they did to make that sandwich taste so good but it totally blew me away from what I expected from an avocado sandwich.  The bread was perfect and avocado's fresh. Bravo. I now want to try everything else on the menu.
We also split a chocolate raspberry truffle cake. It was very rich and it was good we shared it. I still wanted more dessert. Maybe next time I will get my own no-so-rich dessert and not share it with anyone!
I will definitely be back and I am bringing my friends.

  8. Yeah yeah yeah!

What a lovely place to be! I love Cafe Lalo's ethos — a place to grab coffee and desserts before or after the movies, the show, or dinner. It's a really special place and you can tell right when you walk up to it; the trees outside are lit up. This adds to the ambiance as you look outside too. Just a fine, picturesque place to be at with friends!

Whenever people visit us in New York, we typically stop by here cause of how late it's open. The only thing we got here so far are their coffees, which are great as they also come with a Lindt chocolate hehe. I got ambitious one time and got a tres leches cake, which is my favorite! And boy did Lalo deliver on that one. Even thinking about it now, I'm thinking about taking a crosstown trip just to chill there, ha!

Want a perfect dinner date? Hit up another of my favorites, Flor de Mayo, which is right around the corner and then come here! Best of all, they have some stylish free matchbooks. Leave one in the bathroom for some stylish decor and some protection from the smells hehe.
