  1. I've never been to Italy, so I missed out on all the three-hour 15-course meals my study-abroad friends raved about, but if I ever wanted a three-hour 15-course meal, I'd want to eat it here.

My boss loves this place and I can see why: the ambiance is nice and simple (stencils of statues on the walls), the waiters were attentive and very, very good about refilling my water (the glass was never half empty), and my La Fritatta (three-ingredient omlette with roast potatoes) was pretty delicious for the price. Eggs nice and fluffy. They do roast potatoes right – crispy to the point of burnt on the outside, nice tongue-melting hot on the inside.

I'd like to come back and try their homemade pastas, which run the gamut from $10.95 (linguini, penne, rigatoni with your choice of sauce) to the special pastas with seafood ($15.95 range). Don't forget to flip one of the laminated menus over – they have a special menu of paninis (I guess for the lunch crowd), most of which are $10.95 and below. They were on the tiny side (like seriously three big bites and you would be done with half) and come with a little pile of salad, but the combinations sounded so good – salmon and pesto, proscuitto and mozz, and more.

Desserts are awesome. I think we ordered two and then got three more on the house, and it's this customer service that gets CBG over the three-star hump. We had the chocolate souffle, chocolate tartufo, tiramisu, fruit tart, and the risotto cheesecake, which was my absolute favorite. Not too sweet but still rich. I'd definitely come back here for a late brunch of pasta and a few glasses of wine with friends. It's also a good place for a first-date, fancy dinner with the parental units, or a business lunch.

  2. Treated myself to a nice lunch for one on a rainy day, and went to my old faithful, Caffe Buon Gusto. It remains as lovely as ever – clean, with polite staff, and great food. My crab ravioli with shrimp and spinach, plus a side of broccoli rabe was delightful.

The cream sauce on the ravioli is the stuff love songs are made of. So glad that this restaurant is one of the few places that consistently serves great food in a charming establishment. I'm not in Brooklyn as often as I would like nowadays, but I'm so happy that Buon Gusto always makes me feel right at home.

  3. I think it's the last time we will be here.  My husband ordered the eggplant parmigiana.  It looked good when it arrived, with it's cheesy top, but below that layer, the eggplant was just mush.  You couldn't identified any actual slices of eggplant.  Thankfully, it came with a side of pasta, so he had the pasta side and just a bit to the eggplant parm.  Disappointing.

  4. This review is for a dinner event held for st johns alumni , the place itself is cute, it has a greek touch in the design on the walls . The tables were set up very nicely, long tables to sit large groups of 4 8 and 10 so it feels more like "family" style. The service here was fairly quick, they always made sure i had my water refilled and baskets filled and the waiters had great manners and very polite staff. They brought the dishes out one by one, so all salmon dishes came out first and then chicken, etc so the people who ordered the last dish in service had to wait. What stood out to me was the quality of the food, the bread was fresh, the fried calamari was perfecty crisp and plentiful, the marinara sauce has a hint of lemon it was perfect. The entree or chicken capp. Was perfect, the breading of the chicken didnt make it feel like it was too heavy or dry. The presentation was very nice, they placed the garnish and vegetable and cheese salad on top of the chicken , just add a little bit of olive oil from the table and youre all set. The dessert i chose was the ricotta cheesecake which was a very small but thick layered piece, it wasnt as sweet as id hope for but it was definetly fresh. The only thing that holds me back from giving five stars was that the bar in the front looked a bit small they could of expanded it and the bathroom itself was very pretty and modern but the candle they had lit was an awful scent ( think of an old grandmothers cheap perfume with apples and cinnamon totally weird ) , the floors were pretty dirty they could of made the bathroom a little but more tidy for the event. Would i come back to this place though? Absolutely, the food is worth every penny!

  5. Its not outstanding but its really good. If you are in Brooklyn Heights and looking for a cute place to eat outside, I would definitely check out this place. Couple friends and I decided take advantage of a good weather and sit outside for dinner. The place was not crowded and the service was good. Huge portioned meals and everything was good but I would not describe them to be exceptional. Still a very good neighborhood spot.

  6. Unfortunately this is Pretty subpar Italian food. I had high hopes, but my fiancee's lobster linguini was uninspired, it was edible but just not very good. I have to agree about the Eggplant Rollantine- very cheesy but quite bland. It's doubtful we will eat here again, given all superior Italian cuisine around.

  7. Came here on a work lunch with an old supervisor. She is a regular and I'm not so I took her advice on food. She ordered from the lunch pre fixe menu which was reasonably priced and offered plenty of food and good sounding options. I had the lobster linguini which was absolutely amazing. The staff was very friendly and accommodating but I do have to dock them some points for making us ask when someone was finally going to take our orders (we were running on a tight schedule so the delay was especially noticed).

Other than that one hiccup, a very solid and pleasant lunch spot. Would recommend.

  8. A spontaneous dinner gone well! We were happy to dine in the charming hideaway dining room. It was virtually empty so we felt like we had the restaurant to ourselves, except of course for the few loud sports commentators at the interesting front bar.

The sight of the small but empty-ish bar could be a tiny turnoff for couples or solo diners, but once you pass it and enter the ski resort-like, relaxing haven, you'll be able to enjoy the quiet and comfortable vibe at Cafe Buon Gusto, while savoring their authentic pasta.

I had the popular crab ravioli with shrimp in a cognac cream sauce and a glass of tasty full bodied red wine. I wanted to fall asleep right there. Talk about pleasantly full.
