Chez Moi

“Both our entrees were very good (steak and frites, and steak tartare) and we had the best tarte tatin in a while!”

“Colonie has a bit more of a vibe-y atmosphere to it but Chez Moi is a nice go to when you want good food and don't want to deal with a crowd.”

“My friend and I both ordered the Wild Skate Fish with Fava Beans, Artichoke, Lemon Butter.”

  1. I was really, really excited to try this place – but I walked out with mixed feelings about it.
Food was ok, but not memorable nor truly french.
Decor is understated, but clean – that's all I can say about it.

There were so many hiccups in service, tho….
We really wanted to try their bacon-infused cocktail, but were told they just started infusing it and it will take couple hours. Seriously, don't you supposed to do all prep before restaurant opens? Ok, we got different drinks unread.
Than oysters mixup happen – waitress did not seem to know which ones were which for reorder, which led to series of trips to the kitchen. When that was in progress, a guy walked by our table and dropped drink on the edge – not a word said. What? Did he leave it there to drink later??? All confused, we stare at it. Flagged that guy 5 min later – turned out, they did find that bacon infused drink. Ummm, ok.

I really hope they get their service issues together – this has lots of potential.

  2. A lovely, classy spot on wonderful Atlantic Ave. I would recommend coming here after a nice walk through Brooklyn Bridge Park. Lucky for me its one of the closest places for me to pop in to from home. The bartender was making some seriously delicious drinks. Maybe one of my favorites in recent memory. I'd give you the name, but the menu online doesn't have the second page of cocktails. It was a bourbon drink, and a fine one at that. We like to go grab a drink and enjoy the $1 happy hour oysters. You just can't beat it! The beef carpaccio was also delicious, and we looking forward to exploring the menu further.

  3. Chez Moi knows how to do brunch! Brunch here is delicious- they really know how to make a delicious plate of Banana pancakes, Eggs Benedict, and a hamburger. The atmosphere is very lively and the service is friendly and attentive. It's fun to dine at the bar and watch the fresh drinks get made, including fresh juices.
My timing was really lucky, as my table of 9 got seated within 10 minutes on a Sunday. I was anxious to find the best brunch spot, since everyone had come in from far distances. This place did not disappoint and after the meal, everyone thanked me for choosing such a great place! I'll definitely visit Chez Moi again!

  4. Chez moi is an unconditional address in Brooklyn Heights/Cobble hills area.
I don't really know what grade to give them as sometimes I want to give them a 3 stars and sometimes I believe they can be above 5 stars…
Chez moi is a French vibe restaurant with some employees coming from Maghreb which I love. the menu has some French Speciality: Onion Soup, Mussels, and croque monsieur/ Madame… It can be a nice place to have a family dinner/ friends dinner or a date.
There is a boudoir downstairs with a nice cocktail menu. Last time my mussels were not that great … something was missing ( maybe not salty enough?) but the service is professional, quick and efficient!

  5. Ya this place is great! Cute atmosphere reminiscent of a cafe in Paris with decent prices for what you get.

My sister and I both had the muscles. She had the tomato based sauce and I had the white wine sauce. The white wine sauce had huge sprigs of fresh herbs and lots of phenomenal flavors that complimented the muscles without overpowering them. The tomato sauce was the same success, with fresh tomatoes and just the right balance of acidity.

Now to the actual muscles. Huge, plump, and perfectly cooked. I wish I could eat them everyday!! They were served with french fries which were good, but not my personal favorite. I like really skinny fries and these were not those, bummer. When I get this meal I expect delicate fries which are perfectly seasoned, but these were standard fast food fries.

Change your fries and I'll be back!

  6. Finally had dinner at Chez Moi the other night and had a pretty nice time!

Everything we tasted, with one exception, was delicious. We ordered the butternut squash risotto appetizer, escargot, skate entree, and duck breast.

The risotto was creamy and delicious with a hint of sweetness, and the escargot was garlicky and sizzling — I could eat that stuff every day. But the skate was the real star of the night. I have never had fish this perfectly cooked and flavorful. The mashed potatoes it came with evened out the saltiness in the best way. Order this!

The dish that broke my heart was the duck breast, which was unfortunately overcooked and flavorless. We ordered it medium rare (as duck breast should be served) but it was instead done medium-well. And it had an overly gamey, unpleasant flavor that almost made me question the quality of the duck. I wasn't expecting this to be the best duck breast in the world (al di la in Park Slope holds that honor), but given the caliber of the other dishes, I was expecting more.

    The service was wonderful.

Overall, this was a good meal and I hope to return and try more of the menu. But please, fix that poor duck breast recipe!

  7. Follow the rules, Jules!

Chez Moi put me in my place and I kind of liked it.

#1 – Do not attempt to open the bookcase painted door that leads to their speakeasy, Boudoir on your own. A man will tell you in a commanding tone that you mustn't without a manager letting you in.

#2 – You cannot just sit anywhere once you are in the Boudoir. Another manager will come fetch you and lead you down a twisted staircase in candle light to your approved seating area. In our case, two stools by the wall.

#3 – If you trip down the stairs, you must appear unfazed. Just as unfazed as the manager who tells you to watch your step. There are signs on the steps, but you cannot see them well in the candlelight.

#4 – Do not try to order your own drinks at the bar even if no one approaches you to take an order. You must be a patient guest. The Intruder is a cocktail worth waiting for.

#5 – Do not bring AMEX. That rule, we did not violate 🙂

#6 – If you attempt to molest the mini knight statue at the top of the twisted staircase the manager will crack a smile and do it too.

#7 – Be decadent and order things your super FIT ass doesn't normally touch like the escargots swimming in minced garlic and butter or the NY Strip steak with peppercorn sauce to dip your pommes frites into. Dip the thick sourdough bread into everything!

#8 – Don't (but do) get lost in conversation and be the last table to leave the restaurant. That's when the "if you want desert the kitchen is literally closing in two mins" warning will come on strong. Then, order desert!

#9 – Do cab it home unless you think you can manage the twelve block walk to the train with a tummy at fill point and brain buzzing all kinds of happy chemicals.

    And finally…

#10 – Do fast for two days in preparation for your next visit. I can't wait to be put in my place again…merci!!!!

  8. This review is for both dinner and cocktails at Chez Moi as well as the speakeasy downstairs. What an amazing place!!!

My favorite cocktail on the dinner menu is the BASILIC. It may even be one of the best cocktails I've ever had! I loved the combination of gin, basil, and coconut.

My colleagues and I got the fennel and artichoke salad as a starter. While I'm not usually a fan of fennel, the lemon dressing paired nicely with the fennel with a refreshing effect.

I loved loved loved the skate! The fava beans were great, and the fish was perfectly cooked.

The desserts were okay, nothing great. I'd go for the creme brulee or profiteroles if you are really craving dessert. Or another cocktail! Their cocktail menu is expansive.

Service was really wonderful and our waiter directed us to a host who took us downstairs to the speakeasy after our meal.

The Marie Antoinette theme resonated, you felt like you were in the past! There was a jazz violinist on the night we went (which was a Monday!). They didn't have as many cocktails, just 5 or 6, and they can make you the classics. Our waitress wasn't the most knowledgeable but it was her first day.
