  1. This place really is as good as it gets!  Hubs & I love coming here on a Saturday morning to relax and just enjoy each other's company, so far we've pretty much sampled most/everything in their shop including ordering an incredible delicious and soft cake for our baby gender reveal!  Everyone was in awe with their cake and particularly their rich and velvety frosting!

-Cake Truffles are OMG amazing; perfect layer of shell on the outside with moist cake and filling on the inside
-Cupcakes are OMG amazing too!  We like to bring these cupcakes to parties because they are always a hit!
-Cappuccino-Amazing!  Hub's favorite! (And we've been to Paris, Lyon and Lille France several times so he's pretty much a cappuccino/espresso aficionado/addict by now)
-Their tea selection is outstanding; they use SerendipiTea and my go to is the Early Grey.
-Their quiche and turnovers are always flaky and delicious; perfectly seasoned.
-Cheddar biscuits are AMZING and oh so flaky.  Be sure to get one!
-Their various selection of cookies are delicious as well, although I think their stand out gems are really their cakes.
-Lastly, if you are there on a Saturday and happen to run into a cake by the slice offering, GET ONE!  You will be addicted.

Love the atmosphere, love the staff and love everything they sell in there…I could probably live there if they allowed it.

  2. Yum! What a cute little bakery. I discovered this on my way to Brownstone Diner the other night and decided to come back the next day for a closer look. It's very easy to miss – it's a basement level bakery with no obvious signage. If I was across the street, I wouldn't have even noticed it. The place is quite small, there is an area for sitting, maybe about 10-15 people max. They have baked goods in the front and on the side. I decided to give their cake truffles a try. I got a box of 6 for about $20-25. I honestly can't remember the exact price I paid, all I know is that it was expensive. I usually wouldn't pay that much for sweets, but all the great reviews on Yelp have convinced me.

The flavors I got were: Chocolate Raspberry, Oreo, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Red Velvet, Banana Walnut and Chocolate Chip. The Oreo was by far my favorite. Close seconds were chocolate raspberry and the chocolate chip. Honestly, they were all delicious and good. They don't seem that big in the case, but once they were in the box, they seemed massive. They do take a few bites to finish, so you can't just pop these in your mouth.

Overall, I had a really good experience and will be back to try some more baked goods!

  3. All I have to say is, CHOCOLATE PEANUTBUTTER WHOOPIE PIE. Get this and you will not be disappointed, soooooooooooooo good. Also tried their chocolate chip cookie truffle ball ( I think that's what its called?) and some homemade twix-like bar. Both were good but didn't wow me like the whoopie pie did.

On top of the awesome whoopie pie, I treated myself to a double shot of espresso which was great as well. Cocoa Bakery has a great charm about it, its small and very homey. There's tons of little tables both inside and outside to enjoy your delicious treats at. I'll be back!

FYI – they do a lot of seasonal treats here, the guy behind the counter said the pumpkin whoopie pie is a must try, I cant wait for it!

  4. This charming bakery can suck the bucks out of your wallet and return the favor with pounds on your hips if you're not vigilant. You might wince at shelling out $5 for a whoopie pie, but the quality and taste make it worthwhile. The chocolate peanut butter whoopie pie had the lightest cream, but a good peanut butter taste, and importantly, the chocolate cake had just the right moistness and texture, not dense or overly dry. It was also not too sweet, which endeared me to Cocoa Bakery. Like a good artisanal  adult cake, the cocoa flavor was evident, as was the peanut butter and both flavors not overwhelmed by too much sugar.  It tasted as it should, a perfect rendition of an upscale whoopie pie. We were less enraptured with the truffle cakes, though it might have been because we had the cappuccino one cold. When the oreo one was warmed to room temperature, the texture of the cake was far more pleasing, very soft and moist, with just the thinnest cake crust surrounding the ball. Everything we got was fresh.

This is a cozy place to chill with friends, and pretty enough to come with a date. The warm décor gives you the sense of being in your friend's kitchen. Outside seating is just as cute, with the plantings and flowers.

  5. Can't get enough of this place. I've been a fan now for years!! I was first introduced to Cocoa Bakery pre-storefront through my best friend. She would place orders for their famous cake truffles and pick them up. I remember having my first truffle,  red velvet… The cake itself was sooo rich and moist yet the outside coating had a crunch to it from the white chocolate and cookie crumbs. It was love at first bite!

Since I moved away from the area last year, it's been hard for me to come here as often as I used to… But I do try to stop in and pick up some treats on my way to visit my relatives. Just last Friday, I popped in to get a half dozen of (what else) the cake truffles to give to my cousin for her going away party. Our family is fulllll of chocolate lovers and my absolute favorite flavors to get are the red velvet, oreo, and chocolate chocolate. I came in at 8 pm and they ran out of my top two flavors. Fighting back tears, I saw that they had chocolate chocolate and all other chocolate variations available… Enough to fill the box. The gentlemen at the register (with the help of the owner in the back!) was able to hook it up with a fancy ribbon to wrap around my box. They have a whole assortment of colors to choose from for any special occasion. A few minutes later, I was on my way! Needless to say, my cousin tried a truffle and was instantly a Cocoa Bakery lover on the spot.

I have yet to try their cakes or pies, but their cookies and cupcakes are also baked to perfection! Can't wait to plan another trip to JC to have an excuse to come back for more treats.

  6. Stopped by Cocoa Bakery yesterday to pick up a cake for a birthday party. I was in the area and was in need of cake, and Cocoa Bakery just so happened to be the highest rated bakery in DTJC. You can't go wrong they're rated 4.5 stars, right?

This little shop packs a powerful aroma of flour, sugar, and butter aka 'heaven' when you walk through the door. The counter displayed everything from sticky buns, whoopie pies, cupcakes, fig bar, biscottis, you name it. Even vegan friendly cupcakes! To the right, a refrigerated display full of small cakes and cake truffle balls. I'm not talking truffle chocolate size balls, I mean meatball sized truffle balls.

Their 8" round cakes ranged from $38-$50, which at first was a bit pricey to commit to purchasing. But I was in need of a cake. If my sense of smell were correct, the quality of ingredients in their cake was nothing short of great and crafted well.

Verdict? The cake was excellent! A hit at the party! I bought their vanilla cake with vanilla strawberry filling. The buttercream, was indeed 'butter'; the cake not too dry or too moist to lose integrity/balance. What I loved about it was the fact that it had just the right amount of ration between cake and frosting and filling. Cake is about cake and not about masking it with frosting. An honest and simple solid cake made with TLC.  I could not have asked for more. — Cocoa Bakery I will be back!

  7. I started ordering from cocoa since they started out in their apartment some few years back. Now they have their own spot on a main drag in JC. The shop is cute with some seating available for walk ins. As soon as you walk in, you are hit with the fresh baked stuff aroma and smile (lol). The displays have pastries like cakes, muffins, cupcakes, and cake truffles. Cookies are also in a small area of the display. I like cocoas cupcakes because the flavors are simple and the cake is moist. I picked up a last minute cake for my dad's birthday – vanilla with chocolate ganache that had some cookie crumbles in in, and a mocha/chocolate frosting. The cake is dense but moist. The ganache with crumbles is delicious I loved the texture. The frosting tasted buttery and homemade. The smallest cake was $52…a bit pricey but considering the thickness and flavors, I would probably buy it again to try out a different flavor (chocolate).

  8. Perfect place to satisfy that sweet tooth! Came running in here last night, literally because it was so darn cold out, to try some of their delicious treats and their hot chocolate.

I don't understand why its taken me forever to come for a visit but so glad that I did. Everything looked so good it was hard to make a decision. I went with the rice pudding and man oh man was it so delicious. Bae got the chocolate raspberry truffle and the giant cookie. Both were really yummy.

I must say everything was so delicious and staff was happy to help and answer any questions. I can't wait to come back and try other goodies.
