Denino’s Greenwich Village

“Recommendations (some based on the original SI experiences) are mozzarella sticks, fried calamari, meatball pie, MOR pie and the garbage pie.”

“If you've been to the Deninos in Staten Island, and you like it, you'll love this one.”

“Very different atmosphere than the original location, but that's to be expected.”

  1. Great pizza & great service!

Friends of ours were visiting NYC from Germany, and their daughter wanted to do something typically American. We met up in the Village and their daughter (and ours) decided that pizza was a great idea. I suggested we all try Denino's.

We ordered 3 pies (overkill) and my daughter insisted on getting penne vodka. Luckily she shared it with her new friend.

Our friends ordered the MOR: Meatball, onion & ricotta and a Margarita pie. My husband & I ordered a sausage pie. They were all very surprised when the pizzas came because in Germany a pizza is usually the personal, pan-sized pizza.

The beer order was pretty funny. They were pushing Beck's and our  wanted to try something American. He wound up ordering a Coney Island IPA and enjoyed it.

The pizza was really good but our sausage pie was a bit too well-done and I for my taste. My husband loves it that way so he was happy. Everyone enjoyed everything else. No pics because I didn't want to creep out the visiting guests.

The service really was good. They constantly refilled our water glasses and drinks, and kept checking with us to make sure everything was ok. Try it, you'll like it! Now I don't have to go to Staten Island to go to Denino's.

  2. Just like the original location, they are making some incredible pizza here. This is the first franchise location in Manhattan of the classic Staten Island spot.

The Garbage Pie is an absolute must, loaded with all the kinds of meat you'd want on a pizza plus mushrooms and onions, making it a nightmare for the long line of NYU students at By Chloe across the street. The menu is a little confusing because it lists prices for "Whole" and "Half" next to each pie, which doesn't indicate size of the pie, but rather the price of getting that style on just half of the pie. These things are huge, and at $29 for the Garbage Pie, it would be nice to have a smaller size option.

They also have additional stuff here like pasta, which isn't available at the original Staten Island location. I'll be back to try some of that, but the pizza alone is definitely worth coming here for.

  3. This place is wonderful. I love the vibe it has and how large the location is in comparison to the other places in the neighborhood. The bar is significantly large and the staff is very pleasant.

The food plates that kept coming out, all looked fantastic. The only item I ordered was the rice balls which were ENORMOUS and delicious.

I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu. However, I hope that they change their store hours to stay open later as this would be a great place for a late night dinner.

  4. I'm not gonna make fun or pun about their garbage pie…  But that is definitely the pie to get here.

They only serve their pizza in one size, a whole pie, and that's a shame because they would of had me, and many more as regulars.

But for now if you decide to stop by, order the garbage one, the other options are at your own risk, we got the MOR, and it was underwhelming.  The original boss from denino's in Staten island – who was there that night – told me that I should try next time the "A salute" it's a new pie that they just added to the menu.

I took down a star for two reasons: one, you can't get a slice here. Two, the second pie that I got was just average.

Ps. I rank their garbage pie as a perfect pie.. The dough and toppings and sauce complement each other really well, that doesn't make it world class, but it's still a healthy (maybe not that healthy) addition to the pizza scene in new York.

  5. The best part of this place is the pizza and the family owned vibe it gives off.

    Hypes:
    – garbage pizza – just get it. You won't regret it.
    – all other pizzas are great as well. They don't get soggy, stay crispy, the sauce is delicious, and it comes out hot. Takes you back to one of those small towns where the whole family is involved, they take pride in their art, and in this area, a retreat away from the city
    – great for groups and families with kids

  6. Main reason why I docked off one star: not a fan of hard crust but to each his own, yeah?

I absolutely love that Denino's offers the option to make your pizza half and half for people as indecisive as I. The garbage pie is DELICIOUS! The veggie pie was alright.

Things to know about Italians coming to eat pizza in New York:
    1) Italians aren't used to garlic or onion in any sort of Italian dish.
    2) Italians do NOT eat pasta and pizza together in one meal. They must be separate meals.
    3) Do NOT offer Italians the cheese to sprinkle on their pizza. Not an option.

Regardless, we were able to ask for the pizza without the onions and garlic and they liked it! They are from northern Italy, where apparently the pizza crust is thinner so they liked Denino's. They thought it was funny that their Italian waiter offered them the cheese to sprinkle on their pizza because that is a big NO NO in Italy.

Beers are around $5-7.25. We got a peroni for 7.25 and I a Coney Island IPA for 7.25 as well. I was a little surprised they just brought it in the bottle and not with a glass? But either way they were happy to bring it with a glass!

The fried calamari is delicious. My Italian pizza maker friend said the sauce tasted like the tomato sauce you put on pizza plus some spices. I would agree.

Our total came out to $63 for two beers, a coke, a whole pizza half and half, and the calamari.

The atmosphere is cute and intimate, dark lighting, and I think the history of Denino's laid out on the walls. Service is friendly!
