El Malecon Restaurant

“Place is really good, what I suggest is the shrimp mofongo and the steak with smothered onions.”

“That's why there is a place called "El Economico" rift across the street from this establishment.”

“We got seated right away, and there was even a TV crew there doing interviews for the Dominican Republic's independence day.”

  1. I had a late lunch with a friend here due to reviews I read in Yelp.  Yelpers praised their grilled chicken.  In reviewing the menu, we noticed that  prices were high for the simplest of dishes.  I can't believe the paella pricing–sky high.
We decided to split one entree and add another side dish.  We ordered chunks of pork with plantains and a side of mixed rice and black beans  When the order came it was NOT chunks of pork. Instead there were strands of pork over-fried till they had the consistency of beef jerky.  Plantains and rice were  justOK.  Usually in these type of latino restaurants they give you a few leaves of lettuce with a slice of tomato as a pretend salad.  NADA.  Zilch! We ate the food b/c we were hungry and enjoying each other's company.  I don't know how this place survives with over priced entrees and poorly prepared food.  Good luck, cause we are certainly not coming back any time soon.

  2. Really good Dominican food.  Huge quantity and SABOR!

Got the BBQ chicken, bistec encebollado, & carne de cerdo.  Chicken, beef, and shredded pork.  MMM!

Everything was delicious.  The chicken was definitely the favorite.  It was juicy and crispy on the outside.  However, I've definitely had better charcoal chicken elsewhere in terms of flavor.  The rub just did not penetrate into the flesh.  Perhaps the type of chicken used?

The shredded pork was probably my favorite.  Spices used were outstanding and just perfectly salted.

Carne de cerdo was great.  Nice-bite sized chunks of beef.  A must have for everyone missing a piece of home.

  3. All I have to say is… Pollo Salteado con arroz blanco y habichuelas! So good – a staple of my life. I have, however, had some not so great fare here…the platanos taste like they are fried in oil that has already been used to fry, probably chicharron the pollo. The place is open super late – which is great! The rotisserie chicken is yummy but try to eat right away (this pertains to take-out) – it may dry out if you wait too long.

  4. We had chicken, rice and beans with a side of sweet plantains. Also, Mondongo soup was very delicious. It's a Dominican staple. Add some hot sauce and lemons and thank me later. The natural juices were also very delicious.  Great service and delicious food. Portions are large enough for 2-3 people.

  5. The food is soooo good. The portions are huge. I really enjoyed the steak and tostones.  The mofongo  with chicken also every good. The service has always been good. The chinola juice (pasion fruit) its the best.

  6. wonder how this place gets such great reviews?
its very clean and nice inside.
The beans and yellow rice are pretty bland, so disappointing. we had the pernil and chicharrons with the bones.
Both very pretty dry and bland.
Would not recommend or go back.. sorry

  7. Their chicken is finger licking delicious.
Arrived on a Saturday Afternoon and had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated, bread was put on the table promptly. We had to ask for water and flag a waiter to come over, it was a bit packed i might add.
Ordered half a chicken with Tostones, red snapper with rice and beans and a heineken which was served with lemons?
The fish tasted just ok, like farmed fish but it was not bad. The rice was good and the beans excellent.
Now the chicken is their forte, you smell it a mile away from their rest. I always go and get the chicken because of that. It comes with wasakaka (garlic, lime juice) so you can make it juicier.
Prices are not bad but not super cheap as they used to be.

  8. Delicious rice! Shocking prices for the environment: rice, beans, chicken for $18. Waited sooo long for all aspects. Little if no service-Asked no less than 3 times for our check..before my company raised his voice (eek!). I bet ordering to-go in advance might make the prices a little tastier.
