  1. This is a warm and  cozy family run restaurant that pays attention to detail.
Service is superb and prices quite reasonable. The food is unforgettable.  My first time dining there I ordered the red sangria(perfectly made…not too sweet, not bitter, and strong) I had the special which was red snapper in a saffron cream sauce, with steamed potatoes, this was a very generous portion, really enough for 2 people, but it was so tasty I cleaned my plate. And of course having a sweet tooth I  had to order dessert, the flan was excellent, rich and light at the same time, but not too sweet. The family that owns El Olivo really takes pride in everything they do….they really make you feel like you're a part of their family. I cant wait to visit again and try some of their
    other fabulous dishes.

  2. Wonderful paella, appetizer, and sangria! This homie, family-owned restaurant, is a great deal and a delicious place if you are looking for some good Spanish food in Astoria. Close to the subway, nice neighborhood, and reasonable price. Highly suggested!

  3. One line summary: Great food, but thin and non-savory sauces.   Each dinner entree is a tad pricey, but the portion size is suitable for 2 people who gorge, 3 people who eat normal human portions.

    Paella Valenciana: A-
An excellent paella with a high stuff-to-rice ratio.  This isn't the kind of paella where you have to dig around the rice for a piece of sausage, chicken, or a clam.  Lots of good stuff in there.  It's a big dish; I'd say it's easily big enough for two, or if you're eating a real human portion, three, even.

    Mariscada in Green Sauce: B
Like the paella, it's a wonderfully busy mariscada, with a ton of clams, mussels, shrimp, etc.  The reason why I give it a B is the green sauce is a) too thin for my tastes, and b) not flavorful.  The sauce should've been considerably thicker; they should've used more corn starch or flour to thicken it.  Furthermore, it was a very bland green sauce.  It needed a **TON** more garlic.  I wasn't expecting Sevilla-grade green sauce, but I was definitely hoping for something more savory.

Red Snapper with Capers Sauce: B
Again, like the mariscada with green sauce, it's a good dish, but not very savory.  Yes, there were a few capers in the sauce, but the capers sauce barely tasted of capers!  In fact, I'm not entirely sure I tasted much capers flavor at all.  Also, like the mariscada, the capers sauce was much too thin.  It needed to be considerably thicker.  It didn't quite have the consistency of water, but it was too thin to really stay on the fish.  The fish itself was beautifully prepared and obviously quite fresh.

    Next time: The Diablo.
