Empanada Mama

“Probably on my top 5 list of the best drunk food ever is the almighty "Viagra" empanada: scallops, shrimp, and crab.”

“The Brasil, shredded chicken and shredded beef are my go-to and they never disappoint.”

“This thing was action-packed with seafood, and well worth the $3, despite the small size.”

  1. Nice place, pretty chilled. The food was great. Nothing special. The cheese empanada was good, didn't really like the chicken one, maybe it was because it was baked. But def going back to give it another shot. Although the price is reasonable.. ish…around $3.55 per… but with tax and tips, felt like it wasn't worth it.

  2. The empanadas are great, but small and expensive if you're looking for more than a snack. What's really great about Empanada Mama is their delivery hours. This location delivers until 5 am and that's a true blessing for the hungry, night owls of New York.

I tried the Huevos Pericos and the Baked Mushroom empanadas. I preferred the one with egg. It had lots of flavor and plenty of filling. The mushroom one was a bit low on filling and was less interesting flavor wise.

Make sure you get both red and green salsa to go with your empanadas! They're each good on their own, but together they taste even better.

  3. The BF & I ordered in Empanada Mama the last two Sundays in a row.  The empanadas are solid – they arrive warm & crispy, are decently sized/priced, and are very tasty (especially with their red and green sauces).  My favorites are the whole wheat flour Viagra (stuffed with shrimp, scallops, and crab meat) and Tuna Jalapeno.  Being that Sunday night is for over-indulging, we've been sharing about 7-8 empanadas and a salad (will leave you feeling full and content).  We will definitely continue to order-in from Empanada Mama!

  4. Good for lunch. The staff is always really nice and the place is really clean looking.I always order one of the wheat flour empanadas and the small salad-tasty and relatively healthy! Empanadas are well-priced, salad is overpriced. Price goes up quickly here-I was super hungry one day and ordered two empanadas and a side salad and paid $18! That's just too much for workday lunch for me. Beverages are expensive too it's like 3 dollars for a bottled water-so I don't get those here ; ) All that said, this is in my lunch rotation for when I don't remember to bring stuff from home.

  5. Stopped by on my way to a men's fashion week event in the area. Busy night so needed something quick and filling. We were seated and ordered drinks while we waited to order. I grabbed the BBQ and chicken on corn flour. Love the idea you can pick different types of shells for your dietary purposes. Drinks were strong and food was hot! Pretty good sized portions for empanadas, definitely not your typical lackluster amount of filling. We will definitely be back. Two thumbs up over here

  6. I like empanadas~ they're more or less meat pies, but who cares. Good is good. Bad is bad. In-between is in-between. And this is in-between. They have such a large menu, and with a large menu, there's a greater degree of hit-or-miss:

POLISH (miss)~ i like kielbasa and sauerkraut and so even though I had a feeling a polish-style empanada might be a letdown, I still ordered it. And yeah, it wasn't that great~ was kind of bland, plus the pastry just kind of clashed with the overall taste of the filling. I dunno, that was definitely a shame on me for ordering it, but maybe they don't need to make it in the first place.
REGGAETON (hit)~ the flavors of everything meshed quite nicely. I definitely recommend this one.

  7. I just ate here today for lunch. I had a corn empanada with shredded chicken, and a shredded beef arepa with cheddar cheese. I am Venezuelan and don't get to eat this type of food a lot here in New York so I was glad to have run into this place. The arepa was pretty perfect. The empanada was a little different than expected (kind of an odd shape and texture) but still super tasty. I will come back here most definitely. The prices are also totally reasonable. Arepas start at like 7 bucks, empanadas around 3. They also have Malta which made me happy 🙂 Stop by!

  8. The basic chicken empanada & the banana and chocolate empanada are really good here.  I also liked that they were open later hours on a Friday night.  Limited seating here but we found no issues finding a spot to sit.  I'd come back if I were in the area late & night and a craving hit for empanadas.
