$7 for the Chicken & Broccoli lunch special and some tostones? Great deal! Be sure to ask your boss if going home after lunch to take a food coma-induced nap is acceptable.
For an American-Chinese place, it's actually not bad, even in comparison to large chains like Panda Express. I like to order delivery from here on my lazy/fat days or a busy day that didn't allow me to eat until very late.
I like that:
– they open late (until 11:30pm weeknights)
– fantastic value (super cheap for tons of food)
– consistent in taste, quality, and delivery
– food tastes fresh, made-to-order and not as sodium-laden (versus typical pre-made fake Chinese that sits under the heat lamp for hours).
Don't get me wrong, I still slide into a blissful food coma every time I eat from this place. But for a mere $5, I can get 2-3 meal's worth of General Tsao's chicken (and that's the "small" size). If you don't want fried, their Kung Pao chicken is pretty good. On my noodle days, I like Singapore mei fun. The dumplings are also a steal at $5 for 10. Wow, I just realized I order from this place a lot more often than I thought I do.
Since I only order from here on late nights (what a savior in WaHi), I never tried their lunch specials, but they definitely seem like a huge bang for your buck.

This is far the best Chinese takeout place I've tried around the neighborhood. You just can't beat how fresh the food is. I ordered steamed vegetables and I got it how it should be instead of some greasy hot mess without sauce from the other places. One star off because the chicken soup with rice is just a wonton soup base with rice and pieces of chicken dump into it. The delivery was lightening fast! I'm definitely ordering from this place again.
When it comes to Chinese takeout, I believe in the trial and error process. When I moved to my current apt in Washington Heights, I erred a few times during this process before I found my current Chinese takeout spouse…First Choice on Broadway between 162nd and 163rd. We are currently enjoying a happily wedded bliss until I move again and am forced to seek a divorce…my 4th or 5th in NYC.
Seriously though, I LOVE this place. The food is incredibly tasty, and I love the counter guy. He always beams whenever he sees me, and he's even taken to asking where my girlfriend is when he doesn't see her with me. I've witnessed him speak about 5 separate languages, so he's obviously cultured as well. Extra star for that!
Do yourself a favor. If you live in the Heights and anywhere near Riverside and the 160s, come to First Choice. There's no other place like it in a 10-block radius.
