Friedman’s Lunch

“This bustling lunch spot gets high marks for its matzoh ball soup, half-sour pickles and kosher dogs.”

“My mother and I eat gluten-free, so we tried the fried chicken and cheddar waffles AND the gluten free pancakes.”

“Their fried chicken (either GF or regular is great, not the best though) is worth the try.”

  1. Great for a healthy dinner with a small menu to select seasonal dishes.  The drink menu is also small but a great list too.

  2. Went here during a recent solo trip to the city.  I saw from other yelp reviews that they specialized in gluten free cooking, so I was excited to give it a try.  It was also a good excuse to make the trek across the High Line to Chelsea Market and check it out.  It was a great place for solo diners!  I was seated at the long communal table in the front with some of the other diners so I definitely didn't feel lonely.

I enjoyed the $6 house Riesling during happy hour and ordered the fish tacos and truffle fries.  They both arrived at the table with little wooden "gluten free" flags, which was a fun little touch!  The truffle fries were fantastic with just the right amount of truffle oil on them so it wasn't overpowering.  As for the fish tacos, they were lacking a bit in the flavor department.  The fish was well cooked, but the seasoning was undetectable and left the dish a little flat.

The staff was super friendly and accommodating and I would still come back, but I would probably try some other menu items, like one of the burgers.  The gentleman next to me ordered one and I had serious food envy because of how good it looked!

  3. I work around Chelsea Market so decided to give this place a try since it is almost always very crowded.  Ordered the burger and all I can say is "meh".

  4. My friend and I came here for an early brunch on Saturday a few weeks ago, and were thoroughly impressed.

He's from out of town, and not familiar with the tourist-insanity that is Chelsea Market, but I fortunately steered us right to where the restaurant is located, and we were seated pretty promptly.

Our server (meant to get his name because he was so sweet, but forgot to!) was equally prompt in getting our coffee & drinks to us, as well as taking our order. My friend asked our server to 'surprise him' between two dishes (eye roll), and thankfully the server hashed out the obviously right choice with me behind my friend's back (in an expertly secret way).

The food was perfect for both of us – I had the Blood Orange Bellini and Wild Mushroom Toast (yummmm) and my friend had the Mimosa and B.E.L.T. Both were just perfectly executed with everything you'd want in breakfast dishes, and nothing extra.

Can't wait to come back here – just make sure to come at off-hours to beat the crowd!

  5. Delicious! Chelsea Market has so many options, too many to a point where you really need to weed through all the offerings and find out which is a stand out all around. Friedmans will not do you wrong!

Quality food that was oh so good. I had a sandwich and I was in love with this place. Of course I eat enough to feed a small village, so definitely get some sides if you're a big eater like me. The fries and brussel sprouts are clear winners here. I'll definitely eat here again. I had my food as take out (someone picked it up for me) and it was still delicious. Can't imagine how good it'll taste if I had it super fresh.

Try it out, you'll be glad you did!

  6. We stopped in here for a late lunch on December 29. What a mad house!! The fellow at the counter advised us there would be a 30 minute wait and to check back with him in 20 minutes. Sure enough, after 20 minutes, he had found us a perfect end spot. I will say that this is not the place to go if you don't enjoy being ogled at by curious tourists. The seating here is mostly centered around a communal feel. Definitely not cozy or romantic.

Our server Charlie was really great. I ordered the barbecue pulled pork, gluten free sandwich. My significant other ordered the veggie gluten free sandwich with chicken. My meal was okay. Just okay. The bun was great but the pork lacked flavor. And they forgot to put the chicken in the chicken sandwich. The blackberry lemonade was really nice.

    Nothing extraordinary here folks.

  7. Friedman's Lunch is one of my favorite gluten free spots! Most of their menu items can be prepared gluten free – even sandwiches and their chicken and waffles! The chicken baconswisswich on a gluten free roll is definitely my go to. The gluten free chicken and waffles were pretty good, but I think a lot of that is just because it is such a treat for me to have chicken and waffles! Otherwise, they're a bit spicy and dry – not sure I would order them again.

They have a decent happy hour – their website says that it is 4-6, but I'm pretty sure it runs until 7 or 8 which is wonderful for an after work drink and snacks (I recommend the spinach artichoke dip gluten free).

I have mostly been on weeknights and not had too much of a late, but it is a bit of a snug spot and I have heard that the wait can be a bit crazy on the weekends (blame the tourists).

  8. I dined here for an early-ish lunch with several co-workers and was impressed with the friendly service, great food, tasty drinks and cool atmosphere.

Since it was a Tuesday at 11:00, and I didn't see alcoholic beverages on the menu, I asked the waitress if they did indeed serve alcohol at this time. "Are you in New York? YES!" was the response. So we all ordered bloody mary's which were very good, but had extra horseradish so proceed with caution if you can't handle spice!

I ordered the Benny Nova which is poached eggs and smoked salmon topped with hollandaise sauce – yum!! It was delicious! It came with a side salad which wasn't too impressive, mainly lettuce, but that didn't bother me.

If you're looking for a lunch/brunch spot in Chelsea Market definitely check out Friedmans!!
