  1. Some things have changed here over the years and unfortunately not for the better. My family and I still come here for dim sum from time to time. The food here is still pretty good and they still have a good variety of dim sum. I do think their shrimp dumplings are good here compared to a lot of other restaurants, but the shrimp could have been better. Some of the ladies here may be pushing race carts as they may zoom by you without telling you what they have in their carts; they really don't want to tell you and you're being a pain by asking. That being said, the service here has gotten worse. As for the prices, they have either stayed the same or gone up, but regardless, definitely pricey. Maybe not the best option for dim sum, but still a decent option!

  2. I've been to Grand Restaurant many a time for different occasions, and I'm actually quite impressed by the decor and the quality of the food.  Minus the one time I'm pretty sure I caught food poisoning (during a wedding banquet where raw food was served),

This establishment is on the top floor of New World Mall in Flushing.  It's a big mish-mosh of fancy that feels out of place. Why?  Try getting into an elevator in an evening gown at parking lot level at the same time a family was exiting with a cart full of groceries.  At the basement level and first floor, there are eateries/food stalls that sell inexpensive, authentic Asian dishes and a supermarket; then on the 3rd FL, Grand Restaurant is beautifully extravagant, with tons of private rooms for dinners (all with varying degrees of $$ requirements), and the food is good, but the prices are also higher than neighboring Chinese restaurant establishments.

Dishes that I'd sign off on:
    Fried Asian Crab
Salmon Sashimi (pretty sure this caused the food poisoning, but it was also delish)
T-bone steak with snow pea stirfry
Snow pea shoot stirfry with garlic sauce
    Garlic Chicken

Reservations have been tricky at times.  We would reserve weeks in advance only for ~20 adults to arrive and wait while they sorted things out internally.

Be prepared to sometimes share space with larger banquet parties (e.g., weddings).  There were multiple wedding banquets happening around us one dinner, and it felt a bit chaotic and festive.

  3. There are no words to describe how bad the food is here. No flavor whatsoever and pushy waiters. I wouldn't recommend at all.

  4. Came here for dim sum with friends last Saturday around 1pm.  Restaurant was quite large, so we did not even wait a minute before we were seated even though we had a group of 7.  Food and decor has improved since the last time I was here.  The name also changed to Royal Queen although everyone still knows this place as Grand Restaurant.  The clear round shrimp dumplings had a good amount of flavor without being overly salty.  I also liked the sticky rice wrapped in leaves.  Rice had a good consistency and flavor, but wish there was a larger piece of Chinese sausage in the middle.  The portion was good since it was three small ones instead of one large one.  Service was average for dim sum service.  Also look for the photo machine near the entrance  for a free photo although you'll have to understand Chinese to use it.

  5. So people aren't wrong about the fact that it's hard to get service there. You have to physically track down the ladies pushing the carts if you want food, which is a bit annoying but manageable. As for the food, it's delicious and well-made. I love the crispy taro balls and beef ribs. It's a pretty big place and it's pretty with the chandeliers. Bathrooms have plenty of stalls and we went around 10am and there was no wait.

  6. I've been here once or twice for dim sum and always thought it was mediocre. Here for a wedding tonight and the place really does transform into a "Grand Restaurant". There are huge chandeliers everywhere, plush walls and fancy place settings. I guess my review is based on the fact that I would have given it a 2 prior to tonight but since I'm impressed with the transformation, they get a 3. (Review not based on food quality-will have to do an update another day)

  7. This is not a bad place for dim sum. Can't here with a friend on a weekday around 11am. Surprisingly it was already starting to get busy. On a Tuesday. He wasn't as experienced as I was eating dim sum so we decided to have some fun. If we didn't know what the dish was or what was in it then we got it. We also got a few common dishes. What's good about this place is that it's large and roomy. They have a wide selection of dishes. The food quality was hit or miss. Siu mai was standard. We also found many of them to be bland. Some of their special dishes like the baby squid in brown sauce was delicious. The chilled mango soup for dessert was also very good and refreshing after eating a huge meal. They have a parking lot in the basement for a decent price so it is feasible to drive here. I hear it gets really crowded on the weekends so come here early.

  8. Why the average 2.5 stars? (Okay, it's not like I'm doing much to boost its central tendency). The dim sum was decent, the service was fine, and the bathrooms were functional.

We had organized a group of about 14 friends to do dim sum in Flushing, and admittedly I was a little gunshy about the 2.5 – and many other less forgiving ones – on Yelp. But since it was new, and people like to have opinions we just decided to roll the dice and pick Grand.

On a Sunday at 12:30PM, right after we told them our group size (though only four of us showed up early), they almost immediately seated us at one of the bigger tables up by the stage (win). When you walk in, the scale and decor of the restaurant stays true to the attempt-at-grandiosity of this establishment: "Grand," "New World," etc… It feels like you've landed on some garish alien colony with chandeliers the size of cruise ships.

If you're going to come to this restaurant, be reasonable with your expectations. Don't come here expecting anything less than the on-to-the-next hustle of Flushing. This place can comfortably sit large tables that don't make you wonder if there's a health code violation, the dim sum came in many different varieties that even accommodated a Veg, and we had a grand ol' time. (Had to).
