  1. It has lasted over 30 years for a reason–it is a rare NYC outpost for Creole food, with reasonable for NYC prices, Blackened catfish was very good, sweet potato fries and jambalaya good and house salad and cornbread ok–too much dressing on the salad and melted butter on the cornbread..

It seats perhaps 20 people and does not take reservations, so be prepared to stand waiting and then be cramped sitting.

Staff is nice, but giving printed drink menus but not food menus isn't.  Who wants to have to get up–moving adjoining tables, just to read a blackboard?

I also did not care for beers being listed on a blackboard without prices–this is the East Village, not Park Avenue, so not all patrons ignore cost.

  2. This is actually a pretty small place with a few tables and a bar area with stools. It is a dive bar atmosphere with an old jukebox and a menu that is written on the walls. Overall , it is a decent Cajun place at reasonable prices. There is a reason this place has been around for over 30 years. Appetizers are all under $10 and the entrees were generally in the $14 to $20 range. We tried the jambalaya, po boys, and burgers here. The portions are a good size. I liked their french fries a lot – thin and very crispy. My friends thought that everything was too salty. I was okay with it, but obviously your tolerance will vary.

  3. Awesome little neighborhood dive, perfect for breakfast, brunch, and cocktails.

Met up with some friends that lived nearby.  The food looked awesome.  I wasn't hungry, but the bloody mary's I had were top notch.

The tunes in the place were kick-ass too!

  4. This is place OK. I came with a friend for lunch and I think we both enjoyed our meal. The only thing is that our server was odd. Not quite rude but not friendly either. She had an air impatience about her that was annoying. I asked her a question and she didn't answer, instead pointed to the wall where the menu was written. I would have appreciated a verbal response.

The food was decent–cornbread was really good— and affordable. I would come back but  I'm not in any real rush to do so.  All in all it was fine. Just not mind blowing in any way.

  5. I read the reviews and was expecting something a little more than I found. Not sure what but my exceptions didn't quite match reality.
Of course, it didn't help that in clearing the table next to us, one lady knocked everything over and to the floor and then 10mins later in coming to serve our drinks, her tray of drinks landed on the table. Our catlike reflexes meant we had leapt away in time so only our table was dowsed.
Food wise? The jambalaya was yummy and spicy. Me like! The breakfast plate was very full and neither of us managed to finish, so come hungry is my advice.
The Bloody Mary was good and had a nice kick. For a simple cocktail it is interesting how few places can make it well. This was quite good.
Overall, it prob deserves 2.5 stars but rounding up because the food was quite good even if the flying drinks and cutlery made for entertainment we could have missed.

  6. Pretty cool spot if you're looking for some Creole-style food! The restaurant itself has a very Southern vibe to it, with an old school juke box and unassuming bar area – it almost makes you forget that you're in the heart of NYC!

The food itself was quite yummy too! My boyfriend and I came during brunch time, so I got the huevos rancheros with a biscuit and home fries. The home fries and biscuit came as "complimentary" sides, which were quite forgettable (I've definitely had way better home fries), but the huevos rancheros were delicious and reminiscent of Southern-style flavors. I also love that it's just the right amount of food to keep you full, but not too full to the point where you're nauseated (always a plus point in my book!)

All in all, the total bill for 2 people came out to a little over $30, which is actually not bad, considering typical NYC brunch prices.

Good casual spot to check out with friends or even a date!

  7. I really wanted to be blown away by this restaurant seeing that it is considered cajun creole and I love cajun food.  Went here on a weekday night around 5ish.  The bar was full of happy patrons and there were about 2 tables actually seated and eating.  It is a small establishment with about 8 tables give or take and you can actually see the chef behind the bar making the food. This place even has a real jukebox.  I love the feeling you get when you walk in and they have this red light that sets the tone.  For a moment I forgot I was in NYC and thought I was Nola or something.

I ordered the wings  as an app which were amazing and finger licking good.  They are on the hot side therefore I wouldn't recommend sharing with someone that has a weak stomach.  I had the gumbo as my entree and it was not good at all.  It was extremely dark and had this long after taste.  I am not sure if they used too much gumbo file or what but it wasn't for me. My husband had the poboy sandwich he enjoyed and I did as well.

I will most likely give them another try but not the gumbo,

  8. Strangely adorable little restaurant with a cool dive-bar type vibe to it.

Great Jones Cafe has some delicious Southern food! I got the Jumbalaya with cornbread, and it was absolutely wonderful. I usually dislike cornbread, but this one was soft and sweet, though not overpoweringly so. The jumbalaya had sausage and chicken in it, and the meat was flavorful and had a nice spicy kick to it. It was $15.95 on the menu, so it wasn't exactly cheap, but it was a great deal of food, and I left feeling very full.

The service is also very friendly, and everything is very laid-back. There's also a bar in this place, so I'd imagine you can come here for a drink or two if you're not in the mood for food.
