  1. I was craving sushi and after reading all of the rave reviews on Yelp we settled for this place and their famous box of dreams!

We arrived about 30 minutes before closing and were seated at a table upstairs. I didn't look around at the set up downstairs and I was a little apprehensive about the upstairs seating but there was nothing to be concerned about! They have a full sushi bar upstairs and we never felt neglected.

For starters we had the spicy tempura, I'll say that this was my least favorite item. I wouldn't order this again.

I ordered the beautiful box of dreams. The fish was fresh and buttery. The presentation was eye candy. Each box of fish was served in its own delicate bowl of rice. A great presentation.

BF ordered the sushi and sashimi combo that comes with a cut roll. This too was beautifully plated and fresh.

Our server Noel was perfect! He was friendly and attentive making sure dirty plates were quickly cleared and our water was never empty.

Their sake list is limited and pricey. A carafe which is basically 4 tiny sake glasses full will run you about $30. We ordered 2 of these and they weren't really great.

    Ambiance 5/5

    Service 5/5

    Food 4.5/5

Value 4/5 for food 2/5 for sake

Restrooms sorry I didn't check them out

  2. I was visiting New York and was recommended to eat here by a friend. I made reservations a day before I wanted to go – unfortunately for a group of 4 they didn't have any sushi bar seats left.

We had reservations at 7:30pm and were seated upstairs. Luckily we were able to get reservations because we saw a few parties get turned away because they were unable to accommodate them.  Everyone at the table ordered the box of dreams, in addition to that I ordered the salmon carpaccio, since I usually can never pass it up if I see it on a menu, and carafes of the sake and kirin.

Our salmon carpaccio was served with these tiny spoons so that we were able to get the salmon, avocado, and caviar all in one bite – so delicious!!

Our box of dreams consisted of: uni, tamako and shrimp, scallops, salmon, toro/bluefin, yellowtail, sea bream, uni, and negihama. Everything in the box was great – I'm usually not a big fan of scallops and uni due to the texture but I loved both in this box. Sometimes the rice tasted too much like vinegar than I would have liked but overall I loved being able to try 9 little bowls and we were all very full from what we ordered.

It was a great experience and one of the highlights on my trip.

  3. I dined in with a friend on the second floor and we sat at the bar. Our sushi chef was classically trained in Tokyo and had been practicing for 46 years, retiring next year. Everything was great. I had the jewel box, which is an assortment of 9 different small raw fish dishes. One of the boxes contained uni, so I was basically sold.

Service is really attentive and the managers are decked out in suits and ear pieces.

I recommend sitting at the bar as you get to see how the sushi is prepared and interact with the chefs.

  4. As many people who came to Hatsuhana for its box of dream, I came here for the same reason to see what the fuss it is about. Taking my boyfriend here to get a second opinion, I ordered two boxes of dream for both of us and some appetizers- seaweed salad and miso soup. It is worth mentioning that the seaweed salad was very refreshing and delicious with different kinds of seaweed placed delicately in one bowl; I never knew there were so many different variety of seaweeds out there on the planet earth.

When the highly anticipated boxes of dreams finally arrived, both my boyfriend and I were amazed at how beautifully presented the dish was, full of appetizing colors and different surprises orderly compartmentalized into different grids within the box- time for some Instagram photos! 😛

I really think box of dreams is a good choice if you feel like trying everything when you are at Hatsuhana; its selection includes salmon, tuna, scallop, eel, uni, shrimp and etc. Among all the sashimi we tried for dinner, I especially liked scallop and uni- I could just taste a whole mouthful of oceanness.

To sum it all, good sushi, even better service with nice ambiance. I suggest that you make a reservation in advance to avoid long waiting time.

  5. Solid business lunch spot.  Quality fish from an authentic menu.  Not a relaxing experience as it is always busy and I usually feel rushed.  Japanese dining isn't supposed to be theraputic in midtown during lunch anyways.  Excellent sushi.

  6. A traditional sushi-sashimi dining experience that is hard to beat in Midtown. Getting a reservation for five was very manageable on a non-Friday evening. We were seated on the second floor, which was spacious and surprisingly tranquil; i was constantly trying to control my volume, afraid of being the loudest person on the floor.  Every review of the restaurant here suggests getting the Box of Dream, which we did. In addition, we ordered the Sushi Deluxe, Sashimi Deluxe, and Chirashi Deluxe, the last had uni, shrimp and eel. The Box of Dream was delightful! the selection of fish was as fresh as they come while taking you on a short journey through chef's best from the sea. But for sharing among a larger group, I recommend also trying a combination of the "beefier" Deluxe's – sushi, sashimi, and chirashi. Fantastic experience here, can't wait until next time!

  7. For takeout, I've ordered sushi box ($23), consisting of 7 pieces of nigiri and 1 roll, the chirashi bowl ($26), consisting of an assortment of fish over sushi rice, and the special chirashi bowl ($33), which is essentially just a normal chirashi bowl plus uni. For takeout food, Hatsuhana does a great job with packaging. But flavoring-wise, I thought it tasted pretty similar to grocery store sushi but came at twice the cost. (Maybe the experience would have been very different if I had eaten at the restaurant instead?)

The sushi box is made up of a mix of salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and shrimp. I overall found the fish to be on the dry side. The fish also kept on falling off the rice (and no, it can't be because of my chopstick skills), so get the sashimi or chirashi instead to avoid this problem.

The chirashi, and especially the special chirashi, are more satisfying meals in my opinion. But again for the quantity and quality, I find this to be far overpriced.

  8. Really awesome experience here. First of all, the service is incredible. Our waitress, Emi, was out of this world awesome. She was super attentive and friendly. They literally will put napkins on your lap for you and anything you need, they'll help you with. My water was never empty.

We got the box of dreams to split. Instead of sea urchin (uni) we got king crab and roe, which was quite fortunate because the king crab was one of my favorite parts of the box. However, pretty much everything in the box was incredible. The omelette, the salmon (!!!really excellent), the yellowtail, the multiple types of tuna (fatty tuna was particularly amazing), the scallops (the sauce they were in was great), the unagi…they were all amazing. I've never had such fresh, melt-in-your-mouth-buttery sashimi. The presentation was a lot of fun but the quality of the fish really made the meal special (as well as the amazing service).

We finished up with the mochi ice cream for dessert. I'm not usually a mochi fan but I really liked the mango one and the strawberry one was pretty good. The outside mochi part was not too thick or sweet, which is usually what I dislike about mochi I'm the first place.

They gave us green tea at the end, which was a nice thought but it was odd…a bunch of powder congealed at the bottom. I think they could do better.

I was so satisfied and happy with my meal. I had such a great experience, partially due to the amazing sashimi (so fresh! So good!) and partially because Emi was an excellent server who attended to our every need. It's a little pricey, but it's worth it for a great meal. I'll definitely be back.
