  1. The lengthy list of apparent must-have dishes makes it tough to decide, and a perusal of the reviews and pictures here can cause regret for spicy items unordered but hope for a future visit.

The braised bamboo was fascinating in texture, preparation and taste. You'll do a little bit of work chewing this one and it's worth it. It has a smoky barbecue essence. I wasn't sure if dan dan noodles was a proper regional fit but I was in the mood and this was a great preparation. The top of the dish begins innocently enough and then the spice mayhem takes over, with a small amount of spinach providing an intriguing diversion from the fire.

  2. I would say this place is a hidden gem but the New York Times and Michelin guide reviews would say otherwise. Still, a bit further south on Main Street in Flushing, it feels off the beaten path. Serving as my introduction to Hunan cuisine, I loved it.  I've eaten a lot of Szechuan food but the spiciness here is a bit different, maybe more complex.  The farmers pork is an  awesome dish as were the string beans. Service is very attentive–this place has a no fuss atmosphere but it's very professional and efficient.

  3. This. Place. Is. Amazing.

Ignore the weird name that kind of implies that one province is inside another.

The Large fish with spicy chilis is great and has an amazing flavor to it. The stir fried frog legs and spicy eel are both also must tries. Come here with a group(I'd recommend getting a reservation) so you can try a variety of their great dishes.

  4. I like this restaurant, but not it's strange English name because no Sichuan food is served here. Recommended dishes: smoked bamboo shoots with pig stomach, baked fish, and duck casserole. Some dishes here are really spicy as what you will find in Hunan.

  5. If you are craving spicy Chinese food Hunan is the way to go. I have dined in on several occasions and have ordered delivery. They are priced right and the food is flavorful and served (or delivered) fast!

    My favorite dishes to order
    Kung Pao Chicken
Ma Po Tofu w. Minced Pork
    Orange Beef
Shredded Beef w. Spicy Green Peppers
    Sautéed and Dry String Bean

  6. A quick stalking session at my Yelp reviews would reveal my latest obsession with Szechuan mala (spicy sauce).  I am happy that I found this restaurant after the recommendation of a Youtube subscription. This one's for you Mike!

I am no expert at Sichuan or Hunan food, I sure am no judge to the authenticity of the food, but I am a true follower of my own palate.  My limited research seem to suggest that Hunan food has a lesser focus on being spicy than Szechuan food, which suggest the milder seasonings in the food served at HKGS.

On a weekend night, we finally decided to eat here after having this bookmarked for god knows how long.  There were already several tables of diners which is a good indication, we sat down and ordered the spicy fish filet and the pork chop.  Large portions, reasonably priced. Service was exceptional considering a local Chinese restaurant.

I'm keeping my bookmark, I will be back.

Did I also mention that this is a 2 time Michelin-rated restaurant, that alone should have some weight. Considering that this is a genuine regional-Chinese restaurant that was even regarded by the Germans as being good. What are you waiting for?

  7. Friday night around 10pm we mosied in to HKGS for spicy fare as was served in our past visits. The place never changes…and the service is always excellent. Despite the late hour the place was full…Our stomachs were ready to be filled and we ordered Appys to get started:
*Dan Dan Noodles – Always a good choice but not as hot as expected. Had to request large bowl of Hot Chili Oil to add some pow!
    * Pork Soup Dumplings – Delicious with very tasty broth to be sucked out before devouring!

For Mains we re-tried items we had ordered many times before:
    Cumin Lamb and Mapo Tofu

Both dishes looked terrific and we expected a heavy cumin taste on the lamb and a Mala experience with the Tofu. Well…not the case. Every time we have eaten here that was the dirigeur preparation..hot spicy with Sichuan Peppercorns to make your tongue tingle when eating the Mapo Tofu. I questioned the nice manager and she said she saw how much hot oil I was using and that I should have told them I wanted it Mala…didnt understand having to ask  this but next visit I will be emphatic that I want spicy and Mala!!

We still enjoy this place and will continue to return. The fact that its South of downtown makes parking possible which is a BIG plus!

  8. Very spicy and solid cumin lamb and shredded pork with hot peppers.  The spice is almost mouth-numbing, but the meat is tender and very marinated.  Be sure to ask for extra rice as you will likely need that with the spice.  The restaurant is tiny, though, so you aren't really here for the ambiance, but rather for the spicy Sichuan dishes.
