  1. So OK, if my husband didn't take me here, I let his mom and his sister take me. It's my sister-in-law's favorite Chinese food, so since she's in town, we went to celebrate her early birthday. The neighborhood is quiet outside and not a lot of people inside too but it's quite well-known because it's been in business for too long. My husband's family used to come here since he and his siblings were little. I ordered "Triple Crown" from the specials. My sister-in-law ordered her favorite spare ribs, and mommy ordered vegetable. So here comes my review…The dish mommy ordered was delicious because the sauce was delicious (garlic sauce). I'm not a saucy-girl, I like my food with less sauce or dry but when it comes to eating Asian food, you can't have it dry unless you order fry, which I say good-bye. Sauce, like women…can't live with them, can't live without them *:p  My dish was good too, the sauce was not bad but I preferred mommy's dish. I tried a little piece of my sister-in-law's dish and it was all right. If I ever come back here, I'd order the dish that mommy had, vegetable in garlic sauce. The place is spacious, so it's good for a party or something.  Sis-in-law said they used to have a karaoke night. I think they still have because I saw the stage. Our waiter was good but he was the only one running around taking orders. On the way out, we saw some people at the bar section too, which means it's not bad for a weeknight. So OK, I've been to some restaurants that were introduced by my husband's family, mostly in Queens area. They said they got more. Oh no!

  2. Great dinner! I love Uncle Jimmy. He is so friendly, welcoming, and hilarious. He spent much of the night singing and telling us about his karaoke exploits.

    Wonton soup was solid
    Spicy fried tofu was banging! So hot it made me sweaty
    Pistachio ice cream was the perfect dessert, even though it is not traditional

  3. King of Yum sums it up. Let me start with a Disclaimer: I don't like Chinese cuisine.  But I like King Yum. American Chinese Food brings about the bad stigma of MSG and high fructose corn syrup and all the other B.S. in our food in the U.S. King Yum separates itself as a good old fashioned Chinese restuarant serving legit cuisine and interesting ambiance.

    The service is impeccable featuring Hot Tea served in fine China and Hot Towels provided to cleanse your hands after your meal. Many of the waiters have been employed over 20 years.  

    This place features a large dining room, Karaoke stage and separate Bar. Designed with a authentic Tiki Bar theme(more Hawaiian than Chinese..). I 1st visited about 6 years ago on a Friday night while Karaoke went on. Friday nights start off like a night at a senior citizens home. Elderly, seasoned patrons here are regulars and provide LIVE entertainment as they take the stage. If more young folks would come this place has a shot at being revived. There is seating on the karaoke side and Non – karaoke side.

    The menu features family style servings and Meals that offer Soup and Dessert. I always order the Egg Drop Soup (Never Greasy),  BBQ Spare Ribs and Roast Pork LoMein. The Ribs are PERFECTION.  Barbecued like at Uncle Fred's backyard. Crisp, THICK and JUICY! The LoMein is embellished with carrots,  scallion, peas and onion. NOT GREASY or overcooked. If you're on Union and in the mood for YUMMY chinese, stop by.

  4. This is officially a 4.7-star review. It's not on the leading edge of Chinese cuisine and isn't trying to be, but it has delightful old-school ambiance and excellent service.

    The ribs, Lake Tung Ting shrimp and pork sliders were very good. The pu-pu platter is worth trying once – highlights including shrimp toast. Not a whole lot on the vegetarian side if you swing that way.

  5. I must have passed by King Yum over hundreds of times in my lifetime and I always wondered what was beyond those fortress doors. Fortunately, this past weekend I was able to find out just how 'yumm' King Yum really is!

    The exterior looks like a Chinese mafia fortress but the interior appeared to be a "tiki hut" theme that hadn't been upgraded or changed in decades.

    The food was about 4 stars, but the service was 5++++  stars! It is not often that I have Chinese sit-down dinner but my waiter Pui made my experience a fabulous one. He was beyond attentive and served/plated our foods for us as well. Pui is a champion at serving up hott mountains of steaming delicious noodles! He's been working their for 9 years so he clearly has perfected his craft in hospitality.

    Now for the food… THERE WAS SO MUCH OF IT UGH! There was 4 of us and we weren't sure what to order but from looking around the room we knew portions were huge. We decided on doing a family meal for 3 people instead of 4 which came with our choice of soup, 3 egg rolls, 3 entrees, and 3 desserts. Pui understood that we were not trying to order too much food and be wasteful so he accommodated us accordingly. We weren't sure if we wanted egg drop soup or wonton soup so Pui brought us a mixture of both in a giant bowl and served us individually. I told Pui that my boyfriend was allergic to seafood and he made all the substitutions and arrangements for him very effectively and efficiently. For entrees, we had crispy Cantonese noodles with chicken (wasn't bad but not a fan), pork fried rice (recommended), and shrimp in black bean sauce(soooo goood). For dessert we had 3 scoops of ice cream: strawberry, pistachio, and chocolate- all the flavors were so delicious and potent it was the perfect ending to dinner. Although we tried to avoid leftovers we still had 3/4 worth of crispy Cantonese noodles which Pui packed for us.

    I highly recommend this place for authentic Chinese food and great great great service! Pui was such a sweet little old man!

  6. King Yum has been a staple of Fresh Meadows since the 50's or 60's  I grew up with this place. A good old fashioned Cantonese and Polynesian  restaurant, with the old Polynesian drinks with the umbrellas. The food is what you ate as a kid. Not as exotic as the restaurants in downtown Flushing, But King Yum brings back good old memories. So start with a pupu platter then get a wonton soup. I love the lobster Cantonese here as well. Enjoy

  7. I used to come to this place often many years ago and over the years I visit less and less. This is far from the great restaurant it once used to be. This is nothing but a subpar glorified overpriced chinese food restaurant. I've been to better local hole in the wall take out places. Even the smell of the place is uninviting when you walk in. I normally get the pu pu platter and a shrimp and noodles dish. The quality has gone waaaaaay down. Some of the staff have that whole "I'm going to be slightly rude with a smile on my face" vibe. We asked a question about an item on our bill that didn't seem right it was explained and the same person reminded us to leave a tip not once but twice in this conversation as if they thought we were going to stiff them. When you are dropping over $100 at a restaurant I think you have the right to ask a queston about your bill and not be badgered about a tip. I don't think I would ever return and that is quite sad because I do have some fond memories with family and friends here from years ago.

  8. After seeing this restaurant for months, I decided to give it a try (mainly because of the Karaoke attraction on Friday nights) and invited my fellow coworker to go with me. I got there and noticed a sign stating that we had to order a minimum of $16 per person to sit in the dining area… thought this was a bit strange but still sat in the dining area. Our seats had stale food in the creases so my coworker sat on a regular chair. To start, the fried wanton chips were stale. We ordered Pina Coladas, mine was virgin, hers wasn't – they were both priced the same – $8. I figured since there was no alcohol in mine it would've been cheaper but I guess not. I ordered Dim Sum and Shrimp Steamed Dumplings. The Dim Sum was salty so I only ate one and the Steamed Dumplings smelled putrid and tasted worse (My coworker and I split one to try and while I gagged and tried to swallow my piece, she was wise enough not to eat it. I spoke to the waiter and asked him to take it back, and his response was that I should have told him that I didn't want it before it came out. I tried to explain to him that I didn't like the taste of it and if I could have it removed from my bill, he adamantly repeated his response continuously until my  coworker demanded that we speak to the manager. He went to the back room and returned, taking the dish with him. My coworker had chicken loo mein and wasn't impressed either. To honor the $16 pp rule, I ordered another drink. Was not impressed by this Restaurant at all, if I decide to do karaoke there again, I'll sit at the bar. Take the extra time to go to Peking House across the street. Their food and ambience is way better.
