  1. So me and a good buddy of mine finally made a stop in here the other day. We both like Czech/Slovak food and since it was Sunday and not much else was going on, we came for a early dinner.

The food here is amazing. Period. I'm Croatian and I love Eastern and Central European food, so everything on the menu is right up my alley. Even my Greek buddy, who isn't adventurous as me when it comes to trying new food, lovesssss Czech/Slovak food. For starters, we each had a soup. I went with the garlic soup, which consisted of a garlic broth with melted cheese in the soup. It was pretty 'garlicky' to say the least, I smelt it before it got to the table haha but it was awesomeeee. My friend went with the beef stew and couldn't stop raving about it. For the entree, I had the beef with cream sauce and bread dumplings. So far, I'd say this is the best dish I've had in 2010. You don't even need a knife to cut the meat its so tender and the cream sauce tastes like pure heaven. Then you have the bread dumplings to soak up all the cream sauce…..my mouth waters just thinking about it lol. My friend went with the beef goulash, which he loved as well and he got some bread dumplings to go along with it as well. To wash it all down, we both had a mug of Pilsner Urquell (which is one of my favorite beers).

Now, if you aren't a fan of rich and fatty food, maybe this place isn't cut out for you. But if you're like me and don't mind rich and fatty stuff here and there, do yourself a favor and just come and try some of the food. A soup and entree and I was completely stuffed and its not like the portions are huge or anything. While I was eating too….I got to wonder 'How are Slovaks and Czechs so skinny and good looking if they eat this food on a regular basis!?!' hahaha. Hmm what else…parking might be a bitch, but its Astoria, what else is new…All the waitresses are super friendly and even though they knew off the bat we weren't Czech or Slovakian, they still were very courteous. Oh yeah, for the above mentioned that we ordered, the bill came out to around $50, tip included, which is very reasonable.

To some this all up, just be hungry and get your ass to this place!

  2. You walk in and it looks like a country cottage with taxidermy adorning the walls. The people working there are Czech and put out really good homestyle food. I always start out with a Garlic Soup and is clearly one of my favorites on the menu. It's simple, with gooey cheese and runny egg yolk on the bottom and chopped garlic throughout. It is served not very hot as to keep the consistency of the egg yolk.

The portions are very large and filling for the main dishes and come with a potato side and a salad of your choice. I often get the Pork Schnitzel in Potato Pancake batter but almost everything on the menu is good. I like to change it up. Pair it with a Czech beer and I'm a happy camper.

Every year, they also have Venison Fest which feature a wild game menu. I hope to be able to make reservations for that when it comes around in January.

  3. After a frustrating and very disappointing experience at the nearby Bohemian Hall Beer Garden our mid-size group of fourteen came here for dinner.  Our group was the only table being utilized aside from an elderly man sitting at the bar to keep his spirits up from loneliness.  Czechoslovak/Slovakian cuisine which was my first experience as I needed substance before consuming wine or cocktails.  Koliba does not have a full bar as they only have beer and wine.  There is only one waiter in the entire restaurant which her heavy Czechoslovak accent combined with our rowdy group made it difficult to understand or place any orders.  I had to holler numerous times by walking directly to the bar in front of her face to obtain one measy glass of water as well as a business card.  Why should I go to the woman to be served when service should come directly to patrons!?

The placemats for the tables are straight from Crate & Barrel with the colors, texture and look.   The decor is indeed stereotypically grandmotherish.

  4. Wow. WOOW. Koliba is an excellent restaurant, and definitely the best Czech and Hungarian food I've had in NYC so far. Delicious, beyond filling, and best of all, affordable. The place feels like an Eastern European cottage: small, cozy, and warm, with a couple of stuffed animal heads on the wall. The service was attentive and personable, and the waitress put us in the very right direction for choosing our dishes for the night. Be aware that all these dishes come in HUGE portions, so come hungry or ready to bring home some leftovers.

We started with the langos – Hungarian fried garlic bread with shredded cheese on top. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, this was the most filling and best seasoned garlic bread I've had in ages. The pierogis were also top notch, lightly fried with nicely seasoned filling. Both dishes were so large that even with two people, we had to bring back plenty home for later.

The main dishes were just as amazing. The half (yes half) roast duck was beyond delicious – juicy with a crispy skin. It also comes with red cabbage that along with the complementary dumplings (which soak up the duck juices nicely) made for a very full package. The pork schnitzel was also super – a potato pancake crust that somehow did NOT dry out the pork. Again, both dishes were big enough to easily fill 3, so leftovers we took home.

Considering how top notch and large-portioned the food at Koliba is, the prices here are super reasonable. Add in a nice selection of Czech beers, and you have a new favorite restaurant of mine in Astoria.

  5. This place is excellent. Came here for dinner on a Friday night and there was plenty of room. It has a wonderful European decor and the food was delicious. I highly recommend their pierogis (they didn't have the fried ones when we went, but the boiled were amazing). They come with bits of bacon and a big dollop of sour cream in the middle. Each bite was heaven. We also had the pancake batter schnitzel with french fries which was really good as well. This is heavy food, built for people who need to withstand harsh winters, but still works for Astoria. The portions are big as well.

  6. This is one of my favorite restaurants!
The schnitzel here is pretty much as good as it gets.
Besides for that, the Czech beer is nice and cold and the service is great.
I'm already looking forward to going back again…

  7. Quaint place with amazing food.  Honestly, what's better than a pork schnitzel?  Pork schnitzel covered in potato pancake batter!  And just when you thought you knew shish-kabobs and skewers, Koliba skewers chicken, bacon, and cheese, then batters and fries it!  They have a nice little selection of Czech beers by the bottle or by draft, and the waitstaff is more than happy to share their opinion of their favorite dishes.  Simple, hearty, and delicious food paired with good service = one happy customer.

  8. After weeks of wanting to try this place after being told about it from a friend of mine, I finally got here. First of all, the staff is very friendly and told me all about the different items on the menu. Including the dark beer which I will be hunting down in stores to purchase cause it was delicious. I started with the Garlic soup with egg yolk and cheese. It was like nothing I have ever tried but I loved it so much. I began to show the waitress a piece of paper with something written on it that I was told I should try. Not sure of the name of it anymore but it's potato spaetzle with sheep cheese-bacon. Incredible! It was like a rich and creamy gnocci with chunks of bacon. There were pieces of bacon with every bite. It's very rich and filling so I had to bring some home. The waitress told me no one can finish it in one sitting. I'll eat the rest today. Looking forward to that. My wife had the Pork schnitzel in potato pancake batter-topped with cheese. Two huge cutlets where I'm so glad she brought the other on home. I'll be eating that too! This will not be the only time I will be here. The food and atmosphere was perfect. Thanks Susan for turning me on to this place.
