Kouzan Japanese Restaurant

“The look – kind of makes you feel like you're downtown, or somewhere slightly hipper than the UWS.”

“Was at Yuki with friends 3x a week and then they opened their sister restaurant which carried over to a more chic and sexy environment.”

“I am a big fan of vegetable tempura, sashimi entree and a really nice selection of sake.”

  1. Good take out!

  2. Food = 5; service = ?. Seems we got off to a rough start with our waitress – – she seemed a little annoyed when we said that we didn't know a lot about cold sake, and this being our first time there for dinner, we were unfamiliar with the menu. Once we did order, the food came out so quickly that it seemed they would want us to eat and leave as quickly as possible.  The final straw that made me snap was more food…. And absolutely no space on the table!  Who told them that we wanted all of our food, all at once!  Sheesh!

  3. Kouzan was the perfect spot for me and my vegetarian friends to eat. They make a lot of vegetable rolls. Thought it was a pretty typical average sushi restaurant.

Service was nice. They took our phone reservation to hold a table. Nice decor inside. Good amount of seating. Good portion size for the rolls.

Rainbow Roll – $13.35 – Fish was fresh.

Shrimp Tempura Roll – $6.80 – Shrimp was crispy.

California Roll – $5.05 – Good but nothing special.

Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura – $9.35 – Nicely fried and good variety. Batter was nice. Not to oily.

Food was good but nothing I could not find anywhere else.

  4. I came to Kouzan for lunch on a Friday around 12:30 and it was almost empty. As such, we were seated promptly and received our food very quickly.

Although I only tried the miso soup, salmon avocado roll, and eel avocado roll, my impression of Kouzan is that it's a perfectly adequate Japanese restaurant, but nothing terribly special. The lunch specials menu was large and catered to people of all tastes. You could get anything from chicken teriyaki, to Japanese curry, to sushi, to rolls and more. Prices ranged from about $9.50 to $13, which isn't bad for Japanese restaurants in New York.

Everything I had was good, the service was prompt, and the choices were plentiful. Overall a good experience, but not somewhere I would go to frequently if I lived in New York.

  5. pleasantly surprised when we popped in here for a quickie sushi dinner. we didnt anticipate anything earth shattering, but we thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. prb one of the best sushi restaurants on the uws.

    i'd rate it a 3.5 stars…

  6. Came here for lunch on a Sunday, and we were one out of 6 tables – so service was quick! Salmon tasted frozen and the spring rolls are a skip. Salad and soup were good, Philly Roll and Eel Avocado – yum. Skip the spicy tuna roll – the hot sauce used tasted like Franks (?) it was odd. Reasonably priced ($12ish for the bento and $14.50 for the roll combo). Would come again for a quick bite.

  7. With the caveat that, although I grew up in NYC, I now live in Milwaukee, so my threshold for sushi is probably quite a bit lower than that of your average New Yorker, I quite like this place. The sushi is above average, the atmo is nice, the beer selection is interesting, and the service is attentive. I would probably go with 3.5 stars, but I'm feeling generous. It's definitely a good standby for the UWS, which has been a bit of a desert for many years (or has that changed?).

  8. I must say the staff here was very welcoming but the sushi was subpar. I've had way better sushi.
