L’asso Pizza

“A really cute guy who lived across the street suggested the place he said the pizza was just as good as Lombardi's but less expensive.”

“The pizza is freshly baked in a (brick) oven, thin crispy crusts, with basic but delicious toppings.”

“The two types that are my favorite are hands down the san daniele and the mela.”

  1. 3.5

I had eaten at L'asso before and remembered I liked it, so when I saw a $40 for $80 groupon I decided to get it.

We were there at 6:30pm on a Saturday night and it was basically empty. But during our meal it quickly filled to a full house. (They say they don't take reservations on the weekend but when I called they took down my name anyways)

    Spaghetti and meatballs ($16):
Skip it. Nothing you wouldn't be able to make with boxed spaghetti and Costco meatballs.

    Linguini carbonara ($15):
Wasn't bad wasn't great. I liked the sauce but of course the dish is on the heavier side. I wouldn't be able to finish it without craving some salad or something lol

    L'asso Supreme ($22):
I would get this pie again. You can't really go wrong with sausage on pizza. Also I think the dough/crust of all L'asso's pizza is really good

    Megane ($25):
I was trying to be semi healthy and order a pie with brussels sprouts. My plan backfired when it came to my attention nobody but me likes brussels sprouts. So we substituted it with mushrooms. And I think that's why the pizza was too salty? I feel like the Brussels sprouts would've done a better job of balancing the saltiness of the bacon. (The bacon was REALLY salty. Somebody was debating on if it was prosciutto bacon)

We ordered for 5 people and had about half a medium pie leftover.

  2. This is NOT the place to go for gluten-free pizza. If that's what you want, go to Risotteria in the West Village or Pappardella on the Upper West Side.  The crust was AWFUL.  I have had A LOT of gluten-free pizza and this was by FAR the worst.  I can't give less stars though because the toppings (brussel sprouts, bacon and mozzarella) were delicious and the service was on point.  It's a cute little place and my friend seemed very happy with his normal glutenFUL pizza.  I might be back to try the Arugula salad because it sounded freaking amazing.

  3. I came here with a group of about 8 people. There weren't many people there. We all went with the wine and 2 slices for $7, of course.

The waitress was extremely and obviously overwhelmed that there were so many of us…..even though our order was very simple.

They only had a few pieces of truffle and margarita pizza. They ran out?? But couldn't make more?? Or didn't want to?? I was confused. It was good, though. I'll be back.

  4. This place is not fancy looking inside. It has an old, industrial feel to it, which fits with its Chinatown/Lower East Side location.

They serve Neapolitan style pizza (plus a small selection of appetizers and drinks). It is different from the typical NYC pizza in a good way. It is thin, fluffy, with less sauce and oil, and overall healthier. We were also surprised by the size of it. It comes in a long rectangular shape and was much bigger than we expected. We ordered a large to share. It is definitely big enough for three people to share – see my photo with my cellphone next to the pizza for comparison.

  5. After being quoted a crazy long wait at Rubirosa, came to L'asso for some gluten free pizza. Fortunately on a Saturday night no wait and we squeezed our way to a comfy booth.

Pros: Plenty of gluten free pizza options & all pasta dishes have a gluten free option. I went with pizza & got the Dante with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy capocollo, peppers and basil and it was tasty, albeit a bit too salty for my taste. Good thin crust – not super hard or dry like most gluten free pizza crusts. Another pro: no wait on a Saturday night – although not sure if this is the norm or we lucked out since no reservations taken on Saturdays.

Cons:  Our server was not very attentive and service was slow – took forever to get our drinks refilled, food. My pizza arrived cold probably since it was sitting up there for a long while. Husband ordered the pasta and it was nothing special; probably best to stick to ordering their pizza, especially given that you're steps from Little Italy.

Wouldn't recommend as a dinner destination, but good plan B if in the area and need some gluten free options.

  6. The pizza here was not what I was expecting at all but it was still good. My friends and I ordered a half and half pie but it was rectangular? What? I was expecting a round pie. Any who. The pie really felt like a less doughy and thinner Sicilian, but it was nice, airy and crispy. The place itself is comfortable with a few tables and a bar area. Also, it was pretty cool that they don't charge extra if you wanted to do a half and half pie.

    The food:

San Daniele- Tomato sauce, mozzarella, arugula, prosciutto & parmesan. This is such a classic pie and the one here was done well. The prosciutto was nice, it was a tad chewy but still had good flavors. I enjoyed this part of the pie better. yelp.com/user_local_phot…

Alla Roba- Mozzarella, gorgonzola, pear and walnut parmesan, truffle oil, balsamic. This pie grew on me the more I ate it, the first bite was OK but was better over time. It was such a unique combo from the walnuts to the pears to the balsamic to the gorgonzola but everything worked.

  7. SUNDAY BRUNCH and barely anyone was here! L'asso is a pizza joint we'd been wanting to try, one side note the art on the wall is a bit creepy

interestingly the crust seemed different on the Medium pizza VS the Small sized breakfast pizza! definitely enjoyed the crust on the small pizza more so i might have to get multiple smalls in the future
–breakfast pizza (ONLY AVAILABLE SAT & SUN): the bacon makes this one a savory goodie, wish there were more egg yolks though.. 2 mini yolks for a whole pizza was not enough!
–margherita DOC: TASTY, loved the fresh ingredients on this pizza, winner!
–tartufo: nothing too special, the mushrooms could have been more flavorful

NOTE: you can get HALF one flavor & HALF another only on the medium and large sizes

  8. Great pizza, service was laid back and cool.  Lunch Special was good.  Most of the beer on tap was out, but they had Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin which is a solid choice.

Get half and half if you get a large pizza.

I had a groupon and that just made everything a sweeter deal.

I got the pizza with the prosciutto and it was delicious!

Read the parking signs in the area, parking is tough to find.
