La Caye Restaurant

“I got the "frittaye", which was fried plantains (tostones, not maduros), some other deep-fried vegetable, and lightly sauteed fish (you can choose fish, beef, or vegetable).”

“All of the food (except for the djon djon aka black rice…good, but not really Haitian djon djon) was super authentic and delicious.”

“Looking forward to coming back – especially to try out their Lambi, my favorite.”

  1. The restaurant itself was quite nice and the service was absolutely on point. However, I thought it was a bit too pricey for what I got. I had ordered the legim berejenn, which was tasty, but I thought the portion was a bit small for a rather pricey entree.

Other than the price point, the proximity to both the BAM Rose and BAM Harvey theatres does make this place a slightly more convenient location. During the week, they also have a happy hour deal, which offers some of their assorted sangrias at a discounted rate. I'd at least come back here just for that.

  2. I came in for brunch and not only was there a pending grade but it was closed. Hard to find parking. I am so disappointed especially since others gave it a OK review. Also on the website it states they serve brunch on the weekends from 12-3pm…… I guess they need to definitely update the site.

  3. I love the atmosphere here, the cocktails were great. But the wait is a bit long and it seems that many of the dishes are spicy. To start, I am Haitian and have been eating Haitian food all my life so its hard to impress me…I loved the idea behind the dishes. The sliders, salad, and dessert, ect. But everything had a kick to it, except the dessert. There are parts of Haiti where spicy food is common but not everyone has the palate for it or the tolerance. I would have loved everything if it wasn't such a struggle just to get through my meal. But if you are a person, like my girlfriend who loves spicy food this was the perfect place to be.

  4. My only complaint is that they are a bit slow.If you're going to a show, my recommendation is that you come early and have a reservation.I went on a Saturday night and was going to BAM.We ordered two appetizers, fish cakes and conch. Both were good. The conch is something of a standout , it's not tough.I followed with a good roast chicken creole accompanied by root vegetables.Co diner had a root vegetable main course accompanied by black rice which worked better than you might expect.I had a few Prestige Beer's .Prestige is basically Heineken made in Haiti. No time for desert !The room is simple but nicely appointed and the service pleasant and accommodating.Prices are arguably a little high but it's New York.

  5. La Caye is a Haitian restaurant located directly across the street from BAM. It's a cozy, welcoming place with a spacious back patio.  I've enjoyed the creole wings and all four of the unique sangria flavors ($5 each during happy hour!).

This would be a perfect place for a drink or bite pre or post BAM, especially in the nice weather when you can enjoy the back patio space! They offer at theatre dinner menu to cater to the pre BAM crowd. La Caye takes open table reservations if you're dining with a big group or planning to go on a weekend night!

  6. Sadly the only review I can write is a negative one. I came here with my MOH for brunch on 3/26/16. After circling for blocks in search of parking it was closed. She made a reservation on OpenTable and it was advertised on their website that they are open for Saturday brunch from 12-4pm. No signage was on the door indicating why they were not open. Would have loved to experience the food, maybe another time.

  7. Delicious Haitian food. I'm in love with the atmosphere and their brunch menu. I've only gone once for dinner and the food was overly salty but I'll definitely give it another shot. The drinks are amazing.

  8. Really wonderful meal at La Caye after a show at BAM. It's pretty perfect for either before or after, as it's right across the street from the BAM Opera house, but was definitely jam packed before the show. The hostess will tell you "there's no room!" We went in right after at about 9:15 there weren't many people, but it did quickly fill up.

We opted for a meal of appetizers- the creole wings were fantastic. They're fairly dry, served with a savory dipping sauce that I'd easily eat alone on anything. The chicken empanadas were also pretty memorable and I'd happily have those again. The cod sliders were a bit underwhelming. And the macaroni gratin was delicious, ooey-gooey and super heavy.

Drinks are beer, wine and wine cocktails. They have some fairy inventive sangrias, but they only had the rose and basil sangrias that night. I opted for basil (red wine muddled with basil and fruits).. wasn't my favorite but I'd give the other options a try another night.

The service was a tad slow- it took nearly an hour for our appetizers to come out. However, given the ambiance, quality of the food and location, I'll likely definitely go back and recommend it for anyone looking for a bit of something different while catching some culture at BAM.
