  1. I have become a big fan of Mexican Food Trucks and a couple of days ago I found La Perla Mexicana on West 14 St and Washington St in the Meatpacking area. As I approached La Perla I was hit with the aroma of good cooking. You know that loving feeling of spices in the air, meats being grill and eager customers waiting for their tasty goodies. Sold. Ready to order and eat.

I judge Mexican Food Trucks by their tacos. If they can't cut it here, then they need to go back to the drawing board and La Perla did not disappoint. My standard test is ordering a carne enchilada taco. Their version is an over stuff taco with well marinated beef, top with onions, cilantro and liquid guca to accentuate their carne enchilada. Delicious.

Their focal point of this authentic Mexican taco was the carne enchilada, not the toppings. It should be plentiful with meat, tender and well seasoned. In Spanish we call it "SABOR', flavor. La Perla has it down, a HOME RUN.

Overall, I don't know if this is a new location for La Perla Mexicana since they have a restaurant by that name on Mott Ave in the Bronx., but if your in the area and looking for tasty authentic tacos, check it out. I think you will be a happy camper. Enjoy.

  2. I happily stumbled upon this truck in the Hudson Square vicinity yesterday (corner of Varick and King).  I'm not sure if I've seen it before and just kept on walking or actually never noticed it, but I'm very glad I tried it.  Holy crap!  I was raving about the tacos to my coworkers all afternoon, they probably think I'm some obsessed taco freak now.

This is not one of those fancy fusion, chipotle crema using food trucks with newfangled twists on Mexican that are so ubiquitous these days.  This is the real deal.  The address on the side of the truck boldly lists Corona, Queens as its home, so these aren't some young upstarts who have migrated from the Midwest to get in on the action.

Yesterday, the truck was being operated by one guy, and he was quick.  I ordered 3 tacos, which came out piping hot, loaded with meat, salsa, guac and cilantro.  Great portions and for $8, I don't think you're going to find a better deal.  I had the al pastor, grilled chicken and carne asada.  All were very tender and flavorful, in perfect bite-sized pieces to allow for expeditious devouring.

They also offer cemitas, tortas and burritos.  The tacos I had were so enjoyable, I can't imagine ordering anything else, but it's good to know that I can.  This place is a big win, highly recommended.  I'll definitely be back!

  3. This is a review for the PErla Mexicana that's usually on 47th and Park ave in Midtown East.

Got a spicy pork torta here… and it was indeed gobs of spicy pork. Just something was off about it. It tasted good, not great. Then again it was the second torta I had ever had in my life, and the first one I had was when I was considerably drunk. Probably not a great measuring stick.
