La Piscine

“We lounged in our private pool, because evidently no one knows that this is the best thing EVER to do in Manhattan on a Tuesday night.”

“It has good views of the city and Hudson river, so sunset views are pretty here.”

  1. This is one of my favorite rooftops in all of Manhattan. Not because the drinks are particularly special (they aren't) or because the view is particularly beautiful (it isn't), but because if you come at the right place, right time, you have the absolute perfect spot to rest your feet, cool your jets and hang with your special somebodies. And that perfect time is any summer weeknight between 6pm-8pm.

On one such weeknight, my friend and I had a farewell dinner at the Americano downstairs, then came up here to while the night away with drinks. I was immediately impressed with how friendly and thoroughly unpretentious the staff were. Before the elevator doors had closed behind us, we were warmly welcomed and asked if we would care to sit by the pool or somewhere else. I had somehow assumed poolside seats required some special arrangement (reservations, bottle service, etc), but no, nothing of the sort. Since there was plenty of empty seating by the pool, of course we chose to sit there.

Now, it should be noted that sit = beanie bags, because the tables are too low for normal chairs. Then again, you'll be dipping your feet in the pool anyway, so it won't matter. Bonus: They provide clean towels for you to dry up when you're done. Yes, the drinks are a typical $17+, but they have a pretty great selection of certain liquors (Negroni, in particular), so if you know what you want, the friendly staff will be more than happy to make something special for you.

  2. If I could give zero stars, I would.  Severely overpriced for mediocre food and terrible drinks.  When I got my $17 drink (la buena, which was no bueno and tasted like Airborne – berry flavor), I thought, where is the rest of my drink? (See accompanying photos), whereas my friend got the frozen margarita from a machine – at least that was a full glass!

Then I ordered the steak medium and it came back well done.  Truly absurd for $42. The grill is manned by rookies and the hotel can charge 3x what it is worth because of the rooftop view, which is nice but definitely not the best in town.

Lastly, there is a laughable 4ft6in pool that is filled with murky water and takes up space. No one was in it, just dancing around the tiny enclave. You can't pay me to come back to this place.

  3. The drinks are overpriced, but if the view were good, I wouldn't have any issues hanging out here. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Sure, you're on top of the Highline, and the Empire State Building stands a few blocks away, but so do the projects… In addition, together with our expensive drinks, we asked for 2 glasses of water, and were served a bottle of water, for which we were charged $8. The waitress never told us. Everywhere in NYC water is served free of charge, unless you ask for bottled water. Not here…

  4. Beautiful view from the rooftop.

The food menu was a bit limited. Entrees were in the $30-$40 range. We had roast chicken and hanger steak that tasted good but was definitely not worth the price.

  5. Great views! And it doesn't get too crowded. But the drinks are quite pricey. It's on the same block as Gallow Green though and I'd say it's a great rooftop bar option if you're feeling a little too cramped by the crowds at Gallow Green.

  6. I have experienced the best service I have ever had at Le piscine. OSCAR IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST BARTENDER I HAVE EVER HAD.

Seriously, he makes the best drinks and is the nicest person you will ever meet. I came here with my friend and he made our day!

The pool is small, yes, but it cleared out by 2pm. It's so nice to have a pool in NYC when you're not in the hamps. And this one is FREE (what ?!) yup.

Highly recommend. And say hi to Oscar he is Bae. Will be back every summer.

  7. La Piscine ("the swimming pool"), is the roof bar and restaurant in the Hotel Americano on the western end of Chelsea.  It is a refreshing break from some of the Manhattan rooftop madness.  It is very minimalist and modern, there is music playing and there sometimes is a DJ spinning, but it is far from bottle service, guest list madness, etc. And depending on where you in the place, there are excellent views of the skyline, especially the Empire State building.

I came here for drinks one night after having dinner nearby.  The place was quite busy but the vibe was intimate, relaxed and enjoyable.  There were quite a few tables of people eating and a few tables just having drinks.  I got a drink at the bar and was greeted by a friendly bar staff.

Drinks at an upscale rooftop bar on a warm summer evening and I didn't wait in a massive line, wasn't humiliated by a doorman and no fights broke out.   It was all very fantastic.

  8. This is the rooftop bar on the 9th floor of the Americano hotel by Chelsea, like the hotel concept, it's minimal on decor, multiple set of tables on the right side combined w couple of set of lounge sofas, as you walk above the stairs in the back, that's where the pool is, also some booth seats and DJ table by the pool side, there's not much of views by the pool and it's pretty shallow pool.

Waitress were friendly and attentive, views are alright, I could see empire state buidling, couples of high rise on constructions and west side, but not so much of sunset views even though it's so close to west side.

I had 3 drinks, old fashioned, herbal remedy and a rye sunset, for $17 a pop, I expected better! my fav would be herbal remedy, it's very refreshing on a hot summer evening! I don't quite like the rye sunset, it's a strange mix. the overall alcohols in the drinks were lacking as well.  I'll try to settle in one of those lounge chairs, cos the chairs on reg tables are not the most comfortable!
