  1. Walking into Latham House the first thing you notice is that it looks almost exactly like its former restaurant Kitchen at Grove Street. As my friend Hiran said, "If I had the decor of Kitchen I wouldn't change anything either!" And, I'd have to agree. Think Anthropologie meets modern with a dash of glam. Velvet, wood, steel, it's all here, working in unison to provide a comfortable, spacious environment that makes you just want to stay all day.

What is new about Latham House is the food. Now these are Jersey City sized portions! Benedicts with poached eggs on top of opened faced muffins smothered in sauce, with house potatoes and salad on the side! Crispy chicken sandwich on big loaves of sliced bread with french fries and pickled cilantro and jalapeno slaw on the side! Omelette with chive cream cheese and asparagus with salad and house potatoes on the side! This is what was missing before. We need real food over here in Jersey City!

Overall, I thought the food was very good. The only one teeny tiny suggestion would be to make the chicken sandwich bread a little bit softer. Maybe a brioche?

I also tried the ginger orange mimosa, which was a little sweet, but had a lovely fragrance and was very easy to drink.

I'd definitely come back again for brunch.

  2. Recent addition to the ever expanding downtown Jersey City dining scene. While they have a few tables for outside dining, check out the dining room inside. Such a cool ambiance! Large windows with great light, huge comfy banquet booths, marble tables, modern and chic decor with a touch of whimsy t/o the dining room. Outlets were also everywhere in the dining room – great for charging your phone (great touch).

Cute bar area and good drink menu w/a nice selection of cocktails, draft beers, and wines. I got a glass of French Bertin ($11) which was a nice, soft wine. Drinks aren't cheap but the wines seemed to be quality which was good.

Now onto the food! Not a huge menu but there is something for everyone from vegetarians, picky eaters, and meat lovers alike. Good selection of salads, sandwiches/burgers, and then main proteins. My friend and I split the calamari ($11) for an appetizer. Not the best calamari I have ever had as it had a slight kick which I wasn't prepared for. The kick sort of masked the flavor so wouldn't order it again. I got the mac n cheese w/cauliflower which came with a side salad ($18). Absolutely delicious – creamy, flavorful, and rich mac n cheese with the right amount of crisp on top. Portion was the perfect size as you didn't feel absolutely stuffed once you were done. Side salad had a nice vinaigrette and was an excellent complement. My friend got the chicken pot pie ($17) which was huge. Tons of warm, flaky crust with well prepared veggies and chicken inside. I tried a piece and was very impressed. I may be ordering it next time.

Great meal all in all with attentive service as well. A welcome addition to Jersey City!!

  3. I honestly don't know why this place isn't packed yet… I'm going to attribute it to people aren't aware the space is reopened. We had such an amazing time and will be going back as soon as we can. Service is impeccable. Which is amazing considering they've been open a little less than a month?

We were on a tri-date (my bff, her husband and me) and we had been interested in trying out Latham House as soon as we heard it opened in place of the Kitchen. My bff made a reservation for us because we weren't sure of the situation – it being a saturday night. We walked in and were immediately greeted by Kris – by name – at the door. This is touch is something is something that doesn't usually happen at restaurants in JC. Actually it doesn't happen at all. It happens usually at more high end, jacket optional places. I'm always a fan Anyway, we were told our rez table was ready or if we wanted to wait a couple of minutes, we could have a booth. We decided to wait and get a drink at the bar. I got the tijuana 84. LOVE! Made to perfection. I got medium spicy.

Looking around, it seems they did not do a whole lot to the place, but then Kitchen at Grove was brand new when it closed and I can't really see a lot of work needing to be done. They did get rid of that empty table in the front that served no purpose. I can't keep saying enough about the service. Karla, our server knew the menu, and the one thing she wasn't sure about (an allergy) she asked the chef. We ordered for starters: crab cakes (special) and the mac and cheese. main: eggplant, the cuban and the steak. Everything was soo good. Flavors on point. Portions, let's just say we had to take it home with us, and we came hungry.

Kris, the owner/gm made her way over to us at least two or three times to check on us. That was in addition to Karla our server. Kris is super personable and chatting with her, it felt like she was an old friend. She went above and beyond. My bff wanted another glass of wine and instead of just bringing her the glass, she asked my friend if she was like to taste it first before she committed to it. Also, when we were undecided on dessert, she was able to accommodate our different palates -I love pie my bff loves pudding, just do yourself a favor and get both.

My two big things are taste and service, and Latham house nailed it. Service was more of par was a more upscale restaurant, not what we usually get in JC! Food was delicious. Can't wait to go back! Hopefully for brunch.

  4. Latham House is another excellent addition to the Jersey City dining scene.  I hope it succeeds better than Kitchen at Grove Street, which occupied the space before (and little has been redesigned since little change was needed to the terrific decor.) The location is very convenient, just a block away from the PATH station at Grove Street, yet it somehow is also a bit off the beaten track, tucked around the corner on Marin Blvd.  Latham House is worth the couple of extra steps from the other restaurants in downtown Jersey City.

Service was excellent, and the owner stopped by to chat and make sure we loved what we had.  The Serious Hummus was tasty–a bit sweeter than hummus normally is (thanks to pomegranate molasses) but not too sweet. My friend raved about his black bean burger–said it was the best he'd had.  I enjoyed the Cuban Reuben, but I ate too much of the generous serving (which is, of course, my fault.)

I like that Latham House has a menu for everyone. If you want a nice dinner (salmon, lamb meatballs, bouillabaisse) you can dine here for $18 to $30 a dinner.  But if you prefer a sandwich or salad, Latham House offers a few options in the $14 to $18 range.

This place is worth a try.  Take a few more steps from the Newark Ave options and turn the corner on Marin for a great meal.

UPDATE: Had a second visit, and this time, we enjoyed the black bean burger and chicken pot pie and both were spectacular.  The food is great here.  Definitely worth a visit.
