  1. I've never been to South Africa (although I've been to East Africa), so I can't really speak on whether or not Madiba's flavor profiles align with the indigenous cuisine..but SWEET BABY JESUS — MADIBA IS SOOOOOO SOOOOO SOOOO SOOO GOOD! I ordered the curry seafood with breyani and I received a hearty serving of mussels, salmon and prawns seasoned to perfection! The meal came with a variety of dipping sauces on the side and they were all so delicious I ended up just pouring them on different portions of my meal. Let me go ahead and say this — I love good food..but it pains me to spend lots of money on a "casual night out", but Madiba was worth every penny! It's the perfect date spot (if you're into that kinda thing) with great music and amazing decor. The staff is super friendly and I…just can't wait to try it again. Madiba is definitely going to be my "I'm going to impress someone, so I'm taking them to this spot" restaurant.

  2. The service has gone straight down the toilet. Our waitress could not answer any questions about the menu and when asked she would just say "ughhh I don't know ughhh…*pause* ugh i'll ask"

We sent our appetizers back to be redone because 1.) We asked the calamari not be in butter sauce and it was and 2.)  the garlic bread was burnt. Our food ended up coming first and at the END of the meal the waitress was like oh your appetizers never came out? oh Sorry.

    like what? Seriously…

No one check on us through the meal and everyone seemed to be too busy on their phones to deliver any real service.

  3. Prior to today my last visit to Madiba was in 2007 and from what I remember the food was phenomenal. Unfortunately, that's not the case anymore. I wasn't satisfied with the food at all. Maybe I should have ordered a popular item , because I wasn't impressed with the wings and the salmon. The wings were over-seasoned and oily! Honestly it seemed as though the Chicken Peri Peri was fried chicken with sautéed onions and ketchup. I was extremely disappointed with the food.

  4. Came here with a group of 12 for a birthday dinner. Making reservations was extremely easy and the hostest was very friendly via telephone. Despite some issues here and there with the bill discrepancies, I'd say that overall it was a pleasant experience. Not sure if the food is authenic South African but it was certainly tasty. I ordered the seafood curry which was very flavorful and filling. I got a hearty dose of seafood. Great portions. There was so much food I could not finish. The jumbo prawns were also very tasty. The highlight of my night was the friendly wait staff. I hope this restaurant remains open.

Cons- the place is very small. When coming with a large group make reservations.

  5. One of my favorite places to dine in my hood.  It is many things: a small bar, a casual restaurant, a South African grocery store,an activist meeting place, a brunch spot, Mandela shrine and a Fort Greene landmark for over 25 years. While I dine here regularly every 2 months, I love certain dishes on the menu like the Oxtail Potjie (stew) ($25), the Prawns Peri Peri ($25), and the Bobotie ($19).  They also have Sixpoint on draft and one the best and unique desserts served in Brooklyn called Jenny's Malva Pudding ($8).  They also have a kids menu so feel free to bring the little rugrats just as long they don't sit next my table 🙂

  6. Came here with a friend for lunch

    Pros:
    – The curry was really delicious – for someone who loves to eat, I thought that the portion size was a bit tiny
    – Love the atmosphere – great place to chat/catch up with a friend (we did come at lunch time on a weekday so there was barely anyone there)

    Cons:
    – My friend's burger was so burnt so that was really disappointing
    – Waited for more than an hour for the food. They did give us a drink but we waited too long for the food
    – The Riesling was not good 🙁

  7. My colleagues and I dined in for a staff luncheon. Now on my second visit, I ordered the chicken wings peri-peri again with onions, garlic, dried pepper oil ($11) and additionally slap chips, or french fries, soaked in vinegar and salted ($6). The wings were finger-licking good. I definitely appreciated the spices and heat in every bite. It paired beautifully with my order of fries. No complaints here!

And for dessert…flourless chocolate cake served hot with ice cream was delicious.

  8. Pleasantly surprised by this South African restaurant in Fort Green.  Tried the Durban style curry with saffron rice and raisins which was smooth, spicy and delicious.  The Mozambique prawns were well done in deliciously spicy white wine sauce.  Portions are a tad small and prices are quite steep but the quality of the food is terrific.  Service is cold and the place packs out quickly so be sure to make a reservation.  Highly recommended.
