  1. I brought my dad here form Father's day. For some reason, in my memory it was situated directly on the water, looking out onto Sheepshead Bay, but in reality it was across the street. Not that I'd been here before, but I used to think I should try it whenever I happened to be in the area in the past. Ah well, so much for the view. Though to be fair, there is sidewalk seating if you wish to have the Bay as your setting. We ate inside, because the humidity was enough to drive even me to the air conditioning. There's a nice bar area right by the door, and the dining area is a clean, no-frills kind of space. The host was very genial, and thorough about making sure everything was just right. That helped a lot, because everyone was late and I was quite flustered when I first got to the restaurant.

The food arrived after we'd had enough initial awkward conversation, and everyone was pretty pleased. You definitely get an emphasis on Italy's cuisine from the sea on the menu, and my dad roundly approved of his swordfish, while I was also quite pleased with my al dente linguine with white clam sauce. Let me note that this was a different take on the white sauce than I expected; I'm used to having a creamy version, while this was thinner and more redolent of clam juice and the sea. My beloved hates fish and shellfish, so he opted for fettuccine Alfredo. While unextraordinary as a dish, that's a pretty important standard by which to judge an Italian restaurant; his last forkful did not come too long after his first, he enjoyed it so.

I have to say that while the quality of the food overall was very good, it would have merited more of a 3-star rating, but I really liked the host, and it was a nice positive vibe all-around. The restaurant was pretty quiet while we were there, given that it was a Sunday. I hope it survives the assault that Sheepshead Bay restauants have been experiencing in the past several years; it was nice and homey, it would be a shame to lose Maria's.

  2. Went went it Maria Restaurant with a groupon. We were seated in the front room right next to the fireplace. It was really dark because the light bulb above us was out, but the fire was next to our table so I guess it made up for it.

They bring to the table a basket of bread that is partially warm and partially not; I think it was reheated too many times. We got the Caesar salad to split, which was a good size and tasted good, the croutons were really mushy though.

For an entree i ordered chicken Valentino which was sauted chicken cutlets with asparagus, roasted peppers, and mozzarella over linguini, my boyfriend ordered veal pizzaiolo over linguini. Both of our meals were good. The chicken Valentino came in more of a creamy sauce which I was not expecting. I thought it would of been made in a wine sauce being that on the menu it said it was made with white wine.

The prices are decent and so is the food. The service is good and the staff is friendly. Maria Ristorante is worth trying out for a neighborhood dinner.

  3. im really shocked to see such bad reviews on this place, I love the service and ambience in this cute little restaurant. The waiters were very friendly and attentive, always checked up to see how I was doing, put fresh cracked pepper on all my dishes without even having to ask! The selection of wines here are very good, got me a little tipsy actually. The prices aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for with a generous portion
the chicken parmesan was perfect, cheesy with great tomato sauce and a hint of garlic  the pasta was a little al dente but I like it that way
the garlic bread was really good, put some olive oil on it I couldn't stop eating
the ceaser salad was pretty good, its hard to mess up a salad that simple anyway
I was so full I didn't even have room for dessert, next time I come here ill see what they have

  4. I dined here once about 25 years ago and thought it was excellent.  But somehow I never returned.  I had lunch recently with a friend…very light fare.  Cup of minestrone was good, but seemed more generic than Italian.  A salmon avocado salad was also good, with a decent portion of smoked salmon.  Groupon.

  5. My mom was in the mood for Italian food so we tried this restaurant simply because it was close to her home. When we arrived I asked about the pre fixe deal advertised outside but the waiter quickly dismissed it and said that it was not offered on the weekends (but it was Friday which is not the weekend the last time I checked).
It was pretty empty for a Friday evening so we had our pick of tables. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated in a way that it made u feel as if you having dinner in someone's family dining room.
The service was pretty good and prompt (well to be fair it was empty). As for the food we shared an appetizer of crab cakes. They were made differently from what I am used to but they were very good. I order the chicken cacciatore with broccoli which was just OK because it was a little bland but cooked up tender. My mom had the eggplant parmigiana with string beans which she said was a dry and not what she expected. Also not sure why but the sides of vegetables were greasy but bland like the food. The best part of our meal was the crab cake appetizer.
I was initially happy to find an Italian restaurant in the area but I wouldn't return especially at their prices.

  6. I went with my wife and a friend yesterday to Marias for dinner. The restaurant itself was airy and clean. We ordered for dinner a chicken Francaise a eggplant parm and ziti with vodka sauce. All of the dishes were very good and portion size was large.Service was excellent and very responsive. This has been the first time I have been to Marias in over 20 years and I must say it was a good as I remember. The price to value ratio is about average for this type of restaurant. All in all this was a very good experience and I look forward to returning in the near future.
