Marumi

“And then we ordered like two dozens of their colorful nigiri along with their sashimi platter and then shared a nabeyaki udon.”

“I live closer to Tomoe Sushi, but this is by far my preferred neighborhood sushi joint now that I no longer live in Hell's Kitchen (oh Shimizu and Yakitori Totto–I miss you!).”

“I was pleasantly surprised by this little sushi joint nestled in on La Guardia Place.”

  1. This place is awesome.  It's been around forever, and is consistent, cheap, and good.  There are other sushi restaurants I prefer when I feel like treating myself on occasion, but this is perfect for a causal, I'm kind of craving sushi, but don't want to spend more than 40 bucks, kind of evening. Obviously, most people can't afford to go to 15 East every week/month.

Good variety of sushi,  rolls, as well as cooked appetizers.

    Service is pretty solid.

  2. I had a decent enough lunch at Marumi recently.

I ordered several rolls.  They were mostly rice.  They were not bad.  The waitress was attentive and kept mentioning that it was cash only during lunch.  At first, I thought that was odd but realized that she was really helpful actually.

We got to sit and talk.  The AC was great on a hot day.  It was really an average experience.  There was nothing amazing, but nothing really bad at all.

  3. I had to review again after some disappointment on this used to be my go-to Japanese place. Something must have changed here either the owner or the chef after the end of 2015. I went there just in November 2015, everything was as I was expected. I came across a few Japanese friends there, they were happy too. Then in early January 2016, things went upside down. I had my usual Agadachi Tofu, what came was crispy tofu topped with small mushrooms and "Oyster" sauce. Then, my lobster rolls was garnished with spicy "Mayo", very supermarket style. Totally wrong for authentic Japanese place. Plus when I asked one of the veteran waitresses if my Agedachi Tofu was accidentally mixed up with other order from another table, she insisted that their Agedachi Tofu has been cooked like that ever since. This is very disappointed. I am (now was) a regular. I have been going there very often since 2002. Even their green tea now served with a tea bag in hot water instead of brewed green tea. I was about to give them another try, but one of my friends who lives in the area also told me that his experience was also disappointed. So time to find another authentic place.

  4. I was on my way to listening to a jazz set but had not eaten so far.
This place could go for any typical local restaurant of any style of kitchen with fast moving clients. Certainly does not fit as a place for a date or so..
I took the sushi sashimi combo which was excellent. Each piece was very tender – even the eal which I usually like the least in a set.
The white fish had a distinct taste in a very positive way – not fishy and far from any hint of being chewy.
Needless to say the salmon andntuna were great.
Staff is very friendly, they forgot bringing soy sauce to the table but reacted prompt and very friendly.
    I would always come again.

  5. another favorite: we went here several times, and it's a traditional japanese restaurant that's not too much expensive! They serve a lot of traditional small plates, and an amazing sushi.  I always enjoy the appetizers too much, ending eating juts them ( I like to try a bit of everything) and I love the watercress/spinach (depends on what they have) with the goma-ae. The aubergine was amazing too! the portion of the main plates are huge, so, it's better if you order just an appetizer and a main plate- or eat just several appetizers like I always do 😀 –

  6. This location is very convenient for anyone looking for a good meal around West 4. I came here with a party of 3 and was seated immediately. It is not too busy on a Thursday evening, but the restaurant is pretty small so not much seating is available. We arrived around 6:20 pm and just missed the dinner special, which my friend had told me was definitely worth the portions and price. So for those who are looking for an inexpensive, tasty meal, come before 6:30 pm!

My friends got a chicken katsu and pork katsu rice bowl, and I ordered the fried seafood udon. My expectations for the udon were not very high, for I have udon all the time. Yet when the dish came it smelled incredible and all the seafood (squid, shrimp, imitation crab meat) was well cooked. I tried a little of the chicken katsu as well, and am surprised to say that it tasted a bit better than the chicken katsu at Udon West (which is very. very good).

This was an overall 4/5 experience for a weekday dinner, but service was okay; not too great. I would come back given the convenience and the somewhat broad range of rice dishes. There is an expansive selection of sushi for sushi lovers though!

  7. Overall the experience was ok, nothing memorable (good or bad).  I met a friend here for dinner, we ordered the Sushi Sashimi combo.

I came here craving sushi and left craving sushi.  It just was not anything special.  Maybe I have been spoiled with the many Japanese spots I have been to but I am not a fan at all.

Cannot see myself going back unless someone else invited me, because to be fair the service was good and the young woman who waited on us was very pleasant.

  8. This Japanese place is clean, warm, and overall lively. The food is all okay — not great or spectacular but certainly not bad. It isn't pricey and in fact is arguably a good deal depending what you get but you aren't getting anything that will change how you look at sushi or Japanese food in general.

The service is a bit uneven at times. I wouldn't call the staff unfriendly but I wouldn't call it inviting either. They don't rush you though.

It's a decent place to go for sushi in the neighborhood but nothing to go out of the way for.
