Returning from an out of town Easter weekend, we dropped in for late night pho at Pho Mac (yelp.com/biz/pho-mac-vie…)
Denied! It was closing time.
We decided to try this Japanese restaurant. It was Sunday night and empty – usually a bad sign. Is it expensive? Is the food bad?
Sushi was fresh. The tempura udon was pedestrian. Tuna carpaccio was an excellent appetizer; I used its "sauce" and sri chacha for other dipping purposes instead of my wasabi and soy sauce. The chunky spicy tuna roll (see photos) was also impressive.
I'm going to go against my usual urges and say, I won't order toro here again (considering market price). Toro usually melts in my mouth and induces infantile audibles for a few fleeting moments, but it didn't happen this time.
Although the food and service was nominal, Mashihana was expensive for Staten Island (why would I pay to eat here versus Manhattan). When you have Pho Mac next door, it's hard to justify coming here.
