  1. After driving by Max Bratwurst and Biergarden a million times, my fiance and I finally decided to stop in and I have no clue why it took us so long! After snagging a seat outside on a gorgeous spring day, we ordered some beers to start. The lager was fantastic and I loved the option for smaller-than-usual glasses (as I only wanted a little bit).  For dinner, I ordered the beer and cheese brat on a pretzel bun with hot peppers and onions, with a side of mac and cheese to split with my date.  The brat was hearty and packed with flavor and the toppings perfectly complimented the meat. The pretzel bun was heavy and the addition of the spaetzel mac and cheese was definitely too much food for us, but I'm happy I tried them both.  For an authentic German meal with excellent service (LOVED Inka and Chris) in a pleasant atmosphere, don't miss out on Max Bratwurst. It was one of my favorite Astoria meals to date!

  2. I came here on a Saturday night with a group of about 20 people for a friends birthday and had such a great time. Our waitress was just awesome and was happy to answer any questions we had and was very attentive. The atmosphere was nice but could have used more touches to make it feel more authentic but it really wasn't a big deal.

We started out with a few orders of the wings which seemed to have a currywurst type sauce on them and I could have easily devoured plate after plate but I held myself back as i'm a huge fan of german sausages and knew what was to come. We also got a few orders of their version of mac and cheese which was actually spatzle with cheese which was A-MAZ-ING! So along with these appetizers i got the 1L Spaten Octoberfest which is always always delicious and you could tell they keep their lines clean bc of the freshness of the beer.

On to the main course. I decided to go with one hot farmers bratwurst, one beef smoked bratwurst, and one regular bratwurst currywurst style. My favorite was the regular bratwurst prepared in a currywurst style which is basically the bratwurst cut up and mixed with a curry ketchup type spicy sauce that is to die for. The hot farmers bratwurst i thought was just mediocre and a little bland. The beef smoked bratwurst was also very good but nothing could compare to that currywurst. Along with those I had a heaping side of sauerkraut and german potato salad, which both were yumyumz.

I really enjoyed this restaurant and had an overall great experience. I'd gladly come back if i was in the area.

  3. This place has quite a nice variety of sausages. I got the jalapeno pepper sausage & the beer and cheese sausage. I couldn't really taste the kick of the jalapeno or the beer and cheese in the other one, but nonetheless, they were pretty good. I also had the mashed potatoes and sauerkraut. Mashed potatoes were delicious. Sauerkraut was quite acidic sour so I didn't make much of a dent in it. My friend's spicy farmer's sausage was probably my favorite. The beef smoked sausage was okay, nothing too exciting. Overall, it's a nice atmosphere and it wasn't too crowded on a Friday night. Service was good and friendly as well. It's a small place with both indoors and outdoors seating. Parking is rough though, but hey, it's Astoria after all.

  4. Awesome german place!
First time coming here & first time trying german food. Didn't know what to expect but luckily i had a german friend with me!

She suggested the schnitzel which is a common ground for newbies I guess, however I wanted to linger into the bratwurst & sauerkraut direction.
I opted for the "wurst plate" consisting of 2 sausages and 2 sides!

I had the Veal & Chili Bratwurst with the sides of Homemade cucumber salad as well as sauerkraut.

Oh my god, the cucumber salad was unexpectingly delicious. I usually get sides of fries and rice but I wanted to go full german and it was a wise and good choice of mix!

The sausages were delicious & i dipped them in the extra yellow mustard!

Portions are extremely generous & come prepared with care not rushed to feed.

I also gave the beer "HB Dunkel" a try and it reminds me of a less heavy Guinness, just like how the waitress described.

Check in for a .2L of Gaffel Kolsh! This beer also tastes really good!

  5. I've been here twice since my original review and  tried different sausages and most recently the (veal) schnitzel. This place cannot get any better. The schnitzel was two big fried thin pieces and plenty for leftovers. Max is one of the few places where every time I take a bite, I have to stop and say "wow, this is so good." Seriously, after every bite. I love that there are so many options to mix and match main items with different sides.

Definitely one of the best restaurants in Astoria.

  6. We stopped here to use our beer book and got sausages on pretzel buns. I got the beer and cheese and Eric got some sort of hot sausage. Both topped with caramelized onions and sauerkraut. Everything was really good but the pretzel buns were really excellent. I have become a bit of a pretzel bun/roll connoisseur and this was one of the best I've had. The beer selection was great and the wait staff was really nice. It was also Halloween and kids were coming in to trick or treat so that was really cute to watch.

  7. I used to live around the corner from this place and it was basically my go to for an inexpensive meal/beer out (you can order a bratwurst and a beer and spend around ten bucks).
First of all, I feel like I never know what kind of crowd is going to be here-and I mean that in a really good way! There's never a wait and the staff is friendly and quick.
I've tried everything on the menu from the cucumber salad to the bratwurst and home fries (so tasty with little green onions on top!) to the Appel strudel and everything is so good-I literally have never been disappointed with anything I've ordered.
I also love how they bring out 3 types of mustard with your food : ) this is serious German comfort food!
Beer selection is German and tasty.
This is probably to date my favorite German place in NYC next to Zum Schneider in LES.

  8. I've come here a handful of times over the past 4 years that I've been an Astoria aficionado (and now happy resident). One of my fiancés friends lives across the street from here and it's how I first became acquainted with Max's.

I've had several of their sausages (even tried a friend's alligator sausage once, twas' interesting (Not bad though), their fries and their pretzel. Several of their beers as well…although the beer selection is mostly German with some polish, they're not super impressive but they're traditional and pair nicely with the cuisine served here.

I really do have a fondness for this restaurant because there are a few things that really stand out to me.

1.) SERVICE: Really fantastic customer service. If I want something not included, something cooked a certain way, something added – it's never a problem. Phone chargde? Sure! Chairs added because some friends on en route, on it! Service is always friendly, efficient and awesome.

2.) CONSISTENCY: I've never eaten here and felt like somethings was off. The food here is consistently fantastic and my favorite items are their bacon and cheese spätzle (baaaaasically German Mac & cheese. Mac & cheese is one of my favorite foods ever so naturally I'm drawn to ze spätzle) and their faaaaaaaaantastic mustard! Their most mild one although the spicy one is actually tolerable and I normally can't handle things that are too spicy. I'm not even a mustard fan unless it's a veeeery mild Dijon or a honey mustard – but their German mustard here is super tart and vinegary. I love vinegar anything. This mustard is life. Put it on everything here and you won't regret it.

3.) AMBIENCE: It's a fun, warm ambience. Decor is minimal but very German. Lots of bright, yellow-y wood like a small beer house in ze Deutschland, yah? Yah. They usually blast top 40 pop – it's not the WURST thing ever (BWHAHAHA!!!) – I'm okay with this because who doesn't love a side of Katy Perry or Selena Gomez while stuffing their face with bacon spätzle and/or pork sausage? If you're not into this then don't come here. It'll be too much fun for you ya wet mop!

I love this place. If you haven't been here then definitely check it out. Don't get the bacon spätzle…it's mine and I'm probably on my way right now to get 72 orders I'm gonna eat in one sitting (okay, okay – just kidding. Get it. It's cheese-tastic!) :P.
