“It's cash only and a bit cramped but I still trek to Morningside Heights for the food.”

“I like Pisticci's for their light tomato-ey sauces, but Max SoHa heavy meaty sauces and home-made pastas are quite delicious.”

“It's my secret spot near Columbia that I take people to when I'm trying to impress/treat someone.”

  1. Im going to give this restaurant a five because it was probably the best Italian meal I had in New York. My girlfriend may be wrong about Chinese food in NY being better than Hawaii but Italian, hands down, Hawaii has nothing on NY. Hawaii does have a couple of good restaurants but there as so many in NY. The sad part about Hawaii Italian is that most of them branched off from one restaurant so a lot of things tastes the same. I believe with the Italian immigration to NY, there will never be a problem with unique Italian food. Max Soha is one of those places. The taste, the bread, and the price can't be beat.
Max Soha is an old stomping ground of my girlfriend so I had to try it. It extremely crowded and noisy when we first stepped in. We took seat at the bar and ordered there.  We ordered three dishes, Beef Carpaccio, Spicy Sausage in Gorgonzola Sauce, Seafood with Squid Ink Pasta.
The Carpaccio was a little thicker cut than usual but it still was melt in your mouth delicious. My gf never had Carpaccio before and was a little cautious about trying "Italian Beef Sashimi" but she loved it and we had to fight for the last piece.
According to my gf, the Seafood Pasta is one of their main staples.  It was her favorite dish when she was going to college in the area. There was nothing unique about this dish but it was one of those dishes that was done correctly and perfect. The favors were smooth and clean, with no fancy spices and topped off with fresh seafood.
My dish was the Spicy Italian Sausage with Gorgonzola sauce. I LOVED this dish. This dish was different and delicious. The crumbles of Italian sausage was piled high and mixed in with the creamy sauce.  It was like a great alfredo sauce but better. The tanginess of the Gorgonzola and the spiciness of the sausage made this a very special dish and one of the best Italian dishes Ive had in the U.S. It was one of those dishes I really didn't want to share and I wanted to fight off my gf's spoon every time she went in for a bite.
The bill didn't dent my wallet, a little over $40. Overall, this was another great gem in visiting a NY Italian place. Highly recommended.

  2. 2.8 stars You see a lot of grad students here, and for good reason. There aren't many great dining options in the area. I haven't eaten here, but I have attended meetings over iced tea. Not bad,

  3. A couple of friends and I went to Max Soha's for lunch one day.  They started us off with complimentary bread with a dipping sauce, both were terrific and delicious.  I ordered a dish with eggplant and pasta.  It was extremely satisfying and only cost me $9.  Possibly one of the cheapest really delicious italian dishes I have ever ordered.  My friend had the lasagna, it was very rich and creamy, and unlike most other lasagna's I have ever eaten.  It was good, but a little too rich for me to have eaten an entire order of it.  My other friend got the spinach risotto.  The risotto was very tasty, but I always have a hard time eating just risotto by itself, it always feels like it needs something else.  However, I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good italian restaurant in upper Manhattan.

  4. My friends took me here for my birthday dinner. I definitely celebrated my 23rd bday in taste! (ha ha)
I loved the food. The Gnocchi is HEAVENLY. The prices are pretty reasonable and they even have drink specials. THE DESSERTS are amazing. I had creme brulee but my friend got the Tiramisu and that was delicious as well. There is limited seating as it's a smaller restaurant, but the staff were so friendly and sang to me in Italian for my birthday. I had a wonderful night here!

  5. I came here early on a Friday night, about 5pm for dinner. There was only 1 other group there. Apparently no reservations are needed for a party of 2, only 4 or more. By the time I left at 6:30 the place was packed! It's a relatively small restaurant so not ideal for large groups

The waiter was nice. But I did not like how they did not have anymore sangria even though it's on their menu. Nor did that have the Pinot Grigio on their menu. Weird.

We ordered the burrata as an appetizer. They my friend had penne ala vodka and I had the spaghetti carbonara. Not the best I've ever had but the quality is comparable to the price for each dish. For dessert we had a tartufo and creme brulee. Same thing, not the best but good enough for the price.

I would definitely return for a casual dinner. May not be worth a wait though. Overall the food was good and decently priced. It's cash only which I was prepared for, but could be inconvenient for other people. And I wasn't a fan of the wine situation

  6. Came here for the first time and tried the risotto special which was delicious! Their version of iced tea (w strawberry and orange juice) sounded good on paper and the wait or really sold me on it but when it arrived it tasted really watered down.

For dessert I went with the Affogato, which is gelato with a shot (or two?) of expresso and it was great. It really woke me up from the food coma I was about to fall it. Their tiramisu looked great as well!

  7. The pasta, particularly their specials, must be made from the hairs of unicorns or some other mythical creature because it has always, always been EXCELLENT. It's my secret spot near Columbia that I take people to when I'm trying to impress/treat someone. And $20 wine!! Who doesn't love $20 wine?!! You can never go wrong with the black seafood linguine. And the bread + tomato sauce they bring out is super dank (as in the good kind of dank).

  8. Small little restaurant…

Food was okay.. got the steak and cod here.. nothign too crazy

staff seemed a little slow and untrained. had to keep asking them to bring me water/butter and things i need
