I was pleasantly surprised with how good the food was. I originally had gone to my usual spot Kabab king but they did not have vegetable rice. What??? And its on the menu. Whatevers. So I yelped places close by and found I had bookmarked this place previously. I had passed this establishment so many times but never ventured in until last night. The place was full and the line to order to go was long. So it was always busy. A good indicator of what to expect.
So I ordered the vegetable biryani . . . my objective. Then I asked if they had samosas. Yes they did. Score!!! I absolutely love samosas. I thought I knew the best samosas until coming in here. The samosas were oh so delicious. The best I have ever had. Omg. I am definitely coming back just for the samosas alone. As for the vegetable biryani, it was so flavorful and delish. I liked it a lot and definitely getting it next time I come in. Might actually eat in next time. Check this place out.
I literally only come here for the chicken wings. They are so tasty. And its on the salty side which i like. The guys in here are fast and friendly. Its usually always pretty busy and crowded so expect to wait a little.
This place IMO is the best kabab/samosa/apps place in Jackson heights. Their aaloo and chicken samosas are the best around. The chicken behari kabbabs are unbeatable! ( if you like spice). I've sat inside once, but usually get takeout. The people I've dealt with have always been nice, curious, and fast. I always get the samosas and chicken bihaari kabab, as they are my staples, and always try some new things that I find appealing. I've never tried anything I didn't like. Everything is delicious in this place. So much so that I've haven't ventured to the entre side yet lol. I plan on doing that soon though, but its so hard to cheat on my staples. I come here at least once a month for my Desi food fix. Because samosas made at home are just not as good as the ones made my someone else haha.
Must try: chicken and potato samosas, bihari kabob, chicken tikka, chicken wings. And everything else.
Merit Kabab was frustrating in the opening moments when I couldn't figure out the ordering format, but the food was certainly worth the slight confusion.
The chilli chicken had a tangy red sauce and chunks of chicken that seemed fried. I mean that as a compliment, except maybe for dieters. It was accompanies by dal, a mixed vegetable item and spinach, all good, and resulting in a great deal for $9.
If you're reading this during a snowpocalypse keep in mind that Merit is mere steps away from the E, F,R and 7 trains.
The food here looks absolutely delicious and the aromas in the air will make you hungry even if you're not. All I've ever had here are their amazing chicken and beef momos (Momo is a type of dumpling native to Tibet and Nepal).
Lots of places around this part of the woods sell momos, but Merit Kabab's are definitely within my top 3. They're reasonably priced ($6 for 6 momos), they're nicely sized (about 2.5-3 inches in width and height) and really just fantastic.
Sometimes I feel like people skimp out on ingredients for dumplings or momos since they're wrapped up in dough, but not Merit Kabab. They fill em' up generously with deliciously cooked and seasoned meat.
Each momo is an explosion of flavors in your mouth…I hope to come back some point to try out more of their food offerings, but until I have time to sit down here…MOMOS.
Open 24 hours, good garlic naan and goat curry, and all the fried dough things are amazing. (Chicken samosa, veg samosa, pakora, and for the breakfast eaters, muglai paratha.) Dirt cheap also. You can buy momos in the back as well, if somehow the indian food doesn't satisfy. What's not to love? Of course it's super dingy and they have a C health grade. I just pretend I'm eating Indian food in the 3rd world which means I follow the following rules:
1) Don't drink the tap water.
2) Don't eat the salad.
Having followed these rules, I have yet to get sick. Confirmation bias… but I'm not ready to try to refute the hypothesis.
I've tried the momos, aloo paratha, vegetable samosa, mugliay paratha and chicken samosa. Maybe it's me, I wasn't that blown over by the food. I find everything greasy and only okay.
The momo skin was too thick and gummy for my liking. Makes me wonder how long it was steaming before I ordered it.
The onions in the chicken samosa wasn't cooked enough for my liking. Onions were still crunchy inside the meat mixture. I think if the onions were cooked down more until it was soft, it would be a nicer texture inside the samosa. I was not happy about the texture and picked the onions out. Reminded me of the crunch of water chestnuts.
The staff was nice to me but the restaurant is too gritty, greasy and unclean feeling. It doesn't feel very sanitary in this restaurant. Overall it's okay. Would I come back? I'm sorry, I don't think so. I really wanted to like this restaurant like everyone else.
Okay, so its not the best looking place to eat at, kinda crummy looking, but the food will not disappoint! This is one of those "I want a nice, big, tasty meal for a cheap cheap price" types of places.
I live in Brooklyn yet I make my way up to this place especially for their pani puri (gol gappe), samosas, and the dumplings (momos). I have yet to be disappointed with the taste despite being there countless number of times. So seems like they have good consistency.
Definitely try the food out; take it to go if you just can't deal with the interior, but definitely give them a go.
