  1. Mexican food in Sunnyside is about as a lot like the hood's pizza: plenty of options, very few standouts (if any). Mi Nuevo Rancho may not come up in conversation as much as nearby De Mole (yelp.com/biz/de-mole-woo…) or the flurry of street side taco trucks, but at least it showcases the following: divey ambiance, solid prices, good service, and hearty portions.

If you're coming here for things like pozole, tacos, or chimmy changas, prepare to be disappointed. MNR's specialty is within their platters (platillos), big plates such as: lengua a la Mexicana (beef tongue Mexican style), cecina con nopales (salty beef with cactus), costillas de puerco en salsa (pork ribs in salsa), or even their infamous and massive churrasco (grilled steak). It is very meat heavy and in serious portions, but the flavors are all there.

Shooting for something lighter? I've always fared well with their sincronizada, a pseudo quesadilla like tortilla sammie, filled with cheese and ham, and portioned out like triangular pieces that are cheesy and juicy. The oaxaca cheese combined with the grilled tortilla (crispy) exterior makes for a hell of a bite. Manchego cheese is sometimes used, but always ask for Oaxaca if you can.

Tacos and tortas aren't my thing here, but the burritos are already gaining some serious fanfare according to the owner. At about $7 and a whole lot of stuffing, the burritos are frankly too difficult to eat without a knife and fork. The tortilla is literally bursting at the seams with rice, beans, cheese, crema, lettuce, tomato and a protein of one's choice. Mine is almost always carnitas.

Kids or picky adults don't have to recoil at the "exotic meats" offered on the menu. Shoot for their kid friendly items like the "Mexican hot dog" or cheeseburger with crinkle cut fries. The breakfast options are also very solid; don't sleep on the huevos rancheros, they're about as underrated as Mi Nuevo Rancho is to the rest of the hood.

  2. When I was younger and had less food OCD, I thought multi-strategy restaurants were fun. I recall a place on the Upper West Side in the late 80s called "Chitalian" serving Chinese and Italian food, although a Google search just now yielded no evidence of its existence, so maybe it was a hallucination. But now if I see "pizza and bagels" I think, well, which is it?

So I wasn't sure what to make of Mi Nuevo Rancho and Costa Brava, a Mexican And Peruvian restaurant. Cold weather and their late hours got me into the front door, and a quick Yelp perusal indicated that the Mexican part of the menu was there first.

The free chips were a little stale, but then the costallas con verdolaga, #66, was outstanding. Juicy pork was surrounded by zingy green sauce, and even the less flashy elements of the dish like the beans were first-rate. The carnitas taco was another fine example of pork excellence.

  3. We just landed from California and arrived at our hotel around 11pm extremely hungry. Finally found this gem and couldn't have been happier, one of the only places I ate in NY where I actually remember what I ordered. I got the milanesa torta and cabeza tacos, my buddy got some sort of spicy pork tacos, and my sister ordered enchiladas. Washed everything down with about 8 beers and we were out of there for under $50, extremely good considering the portion size and quality of food.

the only weird thing was a random DJ in the corner blasting music when there were probably 6 people in the entire place. But it just added to the awesomeness.

  4. Approve, approve, approve.

This place was pretty much my last hurrah in Sunnyside, and I went there for lunch–I got one of the specials, which was two tacos, rice, beans, and avocado sauce (not quite guac). Also ordered a horchata, because…it's always delicious.

The horchata was awesome–perfect consistency, not too sweet, well-balanced vanilla and cinnamon flavors. Complementary chips were clearly homemade, salsa had a wonderful kick and superb blending of flavors.

Tacos! I got a pastor and chorizo. Chorizo was very, very good (seems to be a running theme in Queens). Nice spice levels, clearly made correctly, and I probably could've had more. Pastor was good, but no chunks of pineapple. Green bottle hot sauce was awesome.

Rice was great, beans were AMAZING. There's something about adding lard into black beans that makes them that much better. Oh, wait–it's fat. Adding fat to anything makes it instantly delicious!

So, anyways, four stars. $7 + $2 for the horchata = money well spent. I'm not good at math, but I think this was a real *positive* experience. Ha. ha. ha.

  5. Stopped in for takeout.

Got the veggie burrito, it's $7 & enormous. Well made, tasty, would definitely order again.

I also had the little squares of cheese, ham & jalapeño, good too.

That burrito though…it fed me for like 3 separate meals. Quite economical.

  6. This is a great sit down authentic Mexican restaurant with an extensive menu. It was a bit muggy inside with not much ventilation. They staff was extremely friendly and we were served complimentary chips and salsa right as we sat down. The chips were harder than what I'm used to but still good and the salsa was great. I tried their carnitas burrito which was pretty tasty. There was a good amount of pork belly which I wouldn't have minded if I wasn't trying to be somewhat healthy. The meat was a bit tough but the burrito was extremely soft as well as the non-meat filling. I have no idea what was in there because there was such much stuff! It was about the size of a small baby and could have served at least two people. It was extremely delicious and I wish I had the metabolism of an Olympic swimmer so I could've finished my burrito. There is a random jukebox on the wall and some speakers on the floor. I'm sure it gets pretty crazy on weekend nights.

  7. I've now been here on several occasions, and it doesn't disappoint. For reasonable prices, Mi Nueva Rancho offers up an array of tasty fare. Most recently, I had the bistec a la mexicana, and it hit the spot! Topped with jalapeño peppers and accompanied by sides of rice and beans and tortillas, it had just the right amount of kick. But be prepared to wait awhile for your food- they take forever!

  8. My fave Mexican place in Sunnyside – everything is on point here!  My favorite is posole, which you get a gigantic helping of (the meat in the stew is so tender – esp pork) + 3 tostadas.  I also love the platters, enchiladas and flautas.  You just can't lose with this place!
