  1. My boyfriend and I came here about a month ago with our friends to attend a mutual friend's wedding – banquet dinner. It was mine and my boyfriend's first time at Mulan.

The decor is chic, intimate, and has a very modern look to it. A very calm ambiance. Most of my rating goes to the ambiance, decor, and the fact that it's a pretty clean restaurant.

The food was slightly above average in terms of taste. There was the standard banquet dinner, but I wasn't a big fan of the fried lobster. The walnuts and shrimp was a little bland and I was expecting some broccoli, but there wasn't any. Everything else was pretty standard or good.

The bartender that we originally saw at the bar was MIA at times when my boyfriend and I went up to get drinks. At one point a young lady stepped in to make drinks for us and I told her I wanted a screwdriver and she said to me "I don't know how to make that, so you're going to have to tell me what's in it." Really!?!? You work in a restaurant/bar, shouldn't you have some knowledge/training on the food/drinks? That question really irked me, but of course I told the substitute bartender what was in a screwdriver so I could get my drink.

Overall, a pretty pleasant restaurant to have a nice family dinner at. The decor and ambiance isn't what you would expect at a typical Chinese restaurant.Mulan is more elegant and trendy.

  2. Mulan- one of the more upscale Chinese restaurant in the Flushing area and most of the time when I come here, it's usually for major celebration such as birthdays or wedding banquet.

Entrance to Mulan is on 39th ave, take the elevator to the 2nd floor and it's to your right hand side.

Parking: Your best option is the big parking lot which is no longer owned by the city which means a bit more expensive.

My wife and I came here today for a friend's wedding.
Decor wise- I don't know if there is any other Flushing restaurant that looks as visually stunning as Mulan, it's just straight up classy, beautiful and relaxing.  Water streams down from the ceiling to the floor which creates a water curtain that separates the main stage from the dining hall along with different types of lighting illuminating from the pool of water- Gorgeous!

Food was well prepared and was delicious.  Instead of the typical Chinese banquet style dinner where they pile dishes of food in the center of the table, here they portion it out for you on the side.  I like this style better but I don't think they prepare 1 dish per table so what you end up seeing is, they have 3 plates of lobsters and they divide that among like 5 tables. which means I was still a little hungry after the banquet. Which I guess is not too bad since their food are tasty- especially the T bone steak.

Service however is something that can be improved on.  Our server just didn't seem like she wants to be there that night.  She was not polite nor did she want to even try.  She tried to take our plates away even when we were still working on our food.  It made me feel like I'm at an eating contest where I'm trying to finish my food before the server come and steal my plate.

Overall: I will agree with other reviewers here and that most of my rating goes to the decor and taste of food. If Mulan can improve it's service, I am sure it will become one of the better restaurant in Flushing.

  3. Great atmosphere. Poor service. Expensive prices for food that tastes average. That pretty much sums up Mulan.

There's not many fancy Chinese restaurants in flushing and Mulan tries to fill in that void.
Maybe 5 years ago, it was good but after going to Mulan for lunch and dinner recently, I won't be returning.

The atmosphere is nice though. Bigger tables, more comfort, nice views of fancy stuff around you. Decor is on point. However service was terrible. Waiters were nice but were MIA (even when there were only a few tables full). Waited way too long to order, get anything, get the check, etc. Even when I was in the small hallway going to the bathroom, a waiter saw me coming down the hall and proceeded to zoom pass me, hitting my shoulder a bit. Come on- I'm not in the restaurant business but I'm pretty sure good service doesn't do that…

Food, pricier than other Chinese establishments, had great presentation but flavor didn't meet what the eyes had expected. Nope Mulan, you failed me.

  4. Attended a 100 day baby birthday banquet. We took over the back area and the round tables easily sat 12 people eat.

We had rounds of food — duck in buns, mushrooms and veggies, shrimp, jellyfish/tofu/chicken, meatballs, steamed fish, fried rice, Lo mein, fruit.

Overall I liked the food and thought the servers were attentive and efficient. They gave us the option to plate the food for us or go in family style.

  5. Mulan has only one thing going on for them and that's the interior design of the restaurant. Mulan would have absolutely NO business if not for that. People only choose this "higher end" Chinese restaurant because it looks better than the typical Chinese dim sum joint. Is Mulan really a higher end restaurant though? NO. They just market themselves as such but their food falls below that of a typical Chinese restaurant in Flushing, and their service is no different than the guys working a small hole in the wall aka they've all got the IDGAF attitude. This place ain't Tao or Hakkasan guys. Mulan is truly a looks are deceiving restaurant and their food is definitely it looks better than it tastes.

More deets about the venue itself – Mulan is split into two. One side is the restaurant side and one is the lounge. The restaurant side is supposedly the prettier and more modern side with a waterfall rimming the stage (which I honestly find stupid and pointless). I was on the restaurant side for a wedding and boy was the place small. Yes, a much better looking venue than other Chinese restaurants but don't forget – That's their only selling point so they better get that down packed. The place is so small though. See the pics posted on yelp? Thank gawd for professional photographers because even their online pics are deceptive. The actual restaurant is extremely small and not half as bad as it looks in the pictures. Think twice if you want to hold an event here.

FOOD – This is so bad, it's sad. Again, looks are everything here. Everything behind that coverup is lacking.

    – Jellyfish with suckling pig, beef, drunken chicken and cuttlefish/squid? – I've had quality jellyfish in my life and I've also been stupid enough to buy those $2-3 packs of pre packaged jellyfish in the supermarkets. The jellyfish I had at Mulan definitely resembled packaged jellyfish the markets sell for the low low. Suckling pig and beef was good as well as the drunken chicken. That cuttlewhatevzsquid was just plain bad.

Cold Lobster and Fruit Salad – This one here is a very popular dish at Chinese banquets. How the heck do you mess up diced fruits, lobster and excessive amount of mayo drizzled on top?!!! This dish was absolutely horrendous and that yellow looking mayo like sauce did not complement at all.

Birds Nest and Crabmeat Soup – I'm sorry but this tasted like a bootleg shark fin soup. I'm all for birds nest $$$$ but it shouldn't taste like a totally different soup. On top of that, my soup was strictly liquid and crabmeat. Birds Nest was nowhere to be found.

Deep Fried Dough and Stir Fried Seafood – That dough, though. Tasted like pure oil. Sort of gross.

Abalone with Mushrooms and Veggies – Veggies were fine since it's not hard for greens to soak up sauce and flavor. The abalone was LAUGHABLE. It was so thinly sliced and mushy and tastes cheaper than the canned $16 shellfish from the market. Was it even abalone?? I thought the abalone was bad but the mushrooms take the cake. The dried shitake like mushrooms are meant to be slowly cooked in the juices to absorb the flavor. My first bite in, I was rewarded with nothing but plain tasteless liquid that mushroom absorbed. The kitchen literally just threw the mushrooms into the plate and cooked it just so that it's cooked.

Steamed Whole Fish – ALRIGHT. CLEAN THE DAMN FISH. This tasted like DIRT and the fish was cooked so over!

Rib Eye Steak – Finally something decent. Surprisingly, the steak was cooked medium and was very juicy and tender. The sauce tasted a little like a BK whopper so if that's something you don't mind then good.

E-Fu Noodles and Fried Rice – The noodles were sweet. These noodles are not sup to be sweet. One bite in and I was done. The fried rice? You know what grinds my gears? When a goddamn Chinese restaurant can't use quality white jasmine rice. What kind of friggin rice is this?!!! Cheap Carolina or Goya brand? The fried rice was bland and falling apart. Def wasn't a fan.

There are more and more dishes I can critique, but it's quite obvious their kitchen needs to step up their game and my fingers are too tired to type more than I already did.

    MULAN YOU SORT OF SUCK.

  6. Mulan prides itself being the first high end Chinese restaurant in the flushing area. It's broken up into two sections: Mulan (which is the regular seating area for lunch/dinner/smaller parties) and Mudan (which is the banquet area for weddings). I remember this place being very classy, elegant and BEAUTIFUL! Therefore, decor certainly deserves a 5/5. However, food wise, I thought it was ok and felt like it was a little bit overrated. Today, I came here for my childhood friend's baby shower. Again, table arrangements were gorgeous but the food fell short of my expectation. I could have found the same quality, if not better, at other restaurants in flushing.

Maybe if I ordered off the menu, instead of the banquet style menu, it would have been a different story. But, I'm not in a rush in re-visit Mulan anytime soon.

  7. Torn between 3 or 4 stars, but this is simply a review for a WEDDING since I've only been here for that. Decor wise, def a solid 4 stars (minus 1 for the flimsy, ghetto looking bathroom). Mulan is not your typical Chinese family style restaurant with the phoenix and red velvet walled background. It's quite modern and I took a mental note of all the different lighting options throughout the night. I thought my friends wedding reception was beautiful here. I really believe that lighting makes all the difference in the ambiance of a wedding. It made it that much more intimate and grandeur, something I don't think a chandelier could even do. While entering through the elevator doors, I did notice that there were two sides. The right side feels more expensive due to that wall with the wine display and what looked like crystals flowing down the ceiling (turns out it's actually a water display).

Food wise, meh! I think it's pretty typical to any other restaurant. Display or taste wise, I could not tell the difference. One thing that stood out was the lobster option. Everyone got their own lobster tail during dinner, which was fantastic. I've heard nightmare stories about this. Some weddings only allow three(ish) lobster tails per table and the guest would have to choose which person on the table got one. How awkward!  Luckily that was not the case for me, but even if you were to get a lobster tail, it was far from anything special. Think frozen with lots of mayonnaise and cheese. Besides that, I can't say any particular food option stood out.

Service was the worst part. None of the waiters really looked like they wanted to be there. SMILE MAN! Not even a smile. Atleast fake a smile? I was annoyed at myself for having to ask for things multiple times and got fed up mid reception and simply asked for a bunch of the same things so I wouldn't have to keep bothering them. Although the waiters lacked the enthusiasm, they were very speedy in bringing out dishes, serving them, and taking away dirty plates which I appreciated.

Overall, I'd say you're pretty much paying for the look and feel of the place as opposed to anything else.

  8. My wife and I had our wedding reception at Mulan.  The staff was very helpful in accommodating our needs and helping set up for our reception.  I asked the majority of attendees to our reception about the taste of the food, I did not hear any negative reviews.  The courses were served in a timely manner and the wait staff were excellent.

Keep in mind, like all Chinese businesses, cash does sweeten the deal especially for a large reception.
