No Fun

“I think Thursdays are my favorite night of the week because there is more room on the dance floor!”

“It's got a little bit of everything–the DJ's insane so if you feel like dancing and rubbing up on hot, 20-somethings head to the back room.”

“Otherwise, it was $2 for coat check-in, which isn't horrible for NYC.”

  1. I usually know what I'm in for when I go out in the LES but jeesh I forgot how grim No Fun was.

Here's the thing, if you are like ~3 years or less out of college, have a lot of energy, no Sunday commitments and a tolerance of freezing temperatures, then I know that No Fun will be your jam. It is admitedly fun when you're hammered out of your mind.

When you're not, it's a looney house. I know that people complain about the lines, but I feel like they are understandable given the mosh posh of people inside. Sometimes you literally just can't walk because there are so many people, not that this will stop the bouncers inside from blinding you with their flashlights while they scream at you to "MOOOOOVE!". I've also been groped at least twice every time I go here – and it's the "oh I didn't mean to graze and linger on your ass as I was passing by".

  2. No Fun ironically isn't that much fun – It could have been OK Fun or Decent Fun, but what makes this a not-so-special experience is how cramped the space really is – there's a huge bar and bathrooms dead center and that line really picks up.  There is a dance space after that but it seems so cut off from the rest that I was mildly confused and mostly uncomfortable.

Although I will give it to them – they definitely know this place is mild fire hazard because they use flashlights to get us from one "corridor" to the next without bumping into the 40 other people doing the same thing.

Other than that, the drinks were okay (not terrible price), and the bartender possibly thought we weren't attractive enough to get drinks because it took FOREVER to get his attention.

  3. What a pleasant surprise! No Fun is actually pretty fun. We came here on a Saturday night after a long day of exploring NYC. This bar is located near all of the hip East Village bars, so it's a great establishment to stop by on a night of bar hopping.

The line to get it was pretty ridiculous. We probably waited in the cold for about 30-40 minutes. When we got in, it wasn't even that crowded, so it was not cool. However, the times we had in there made up for it. Their music selection was good. There were a few rooms you could go to, but we generally stayed in the bar area. I had a Whiskey Sour which was about $10 which is normal for the city. I would suggest using the bathroom before getting there though. There was also a super long line for the bathroom.

Overall, No Fun was fun. It wasn't anything super spectacular, but it's a popular spot in NYC for millenials. Everyone was really friendly and approachable so come here if you're looking to meet people. I do suggest going early to avoid all of the waiting and possibly pregaming before to be less irritable during the waiting process.

  4. Walked away with slightly less tooth enamel and sense of self-worth. FUN tho. 🙂

  5. Based on reviews, I was expecting much worse when I arrived, but overall, it wasn't too bad.  The space is divided into two main areas: the bar in the front and the back space where there were a few booths, and what I assume to be space for dancing.

I came here on a Saturday afternoon in 1 degree weather, and the place was almost empty except for my friend's farewell party.  There was no music playing at the time.

In order to get food or drinks, we had to order at the bar.  The Peligroso was a tequila shot with a Tecate beer chaser.  We also ordered some tortilla chips with guacamole and grilled shrimp.

I have to say, for bar food, the items were pretty decent.  The dip had a nice freshness to it, but I do wish there had been more of it.  For regular prices, as there were no happy hour specials on food, I expected a bigger portion.  As for the shrimp, it had nice grill marks and the cumin added a slight warmth to the dish.

For a quick bite on a weekend afternoon, I'd return.  I can see how there would be some reservations about it as a party atmosphere though.

  6. Very fun.

Top 40 songs, ample room to dance, always packed with people, get here before 12 to avoid the line.

    Sometimes there's a $10 cover for guys

  7. Since I'm not from NYC, maybe I was just ill prepared for what bars are like. It was jam packed crowded here. You could barely even squeeze through the dance floor to get to coat check. It was fairly easy to order a drink though, so I appreciate the speedy bartenders. The bouncers were so annoying though. They kept waving their crazy bright flashlights all over and it was like a strobe light in my eyes (we even moved locations a few times and one always ended up pointing it by us!).

  8. On a Wednesday night, the LES is pretty much dead- especially when snowing. We stopped by this bar for a few drinks and had a fun time talking with the bartender. I ordered a High City Miles- I'm a fan of the Bloody Mary style spicy drinks. My friend got an old fashioned, and we sampled some interesting German concoctions. The Peligroso and Tecate is excellent- make sure you ask for a pickle back! I had a whiskey pickle back and my friend had a tequila pickle back (I need to try the tequila one soon). Great little stop on a night out, unless you want to have no fun!
