  1. Hmmm…someone told me this was good. I think it was someone that needs to eat halal.

For me this was just another small, cheap Chinese place. The food is passable as edible for someone who is hungry but after that there is nothing extra special about it. They have all day specials that make your meal not too pricey (comes with rice and an egg roll and a drink).

The place looks a little sketch like any casual Chinese restaurant in NYC, especially with its 4th avenue location so close to the Atlantic avenue subway. I didn't feel uncomfortable eating in here but the space is limited (10 seats total probably).

  2. They are getting sloppy. My pastime choice was the chicken wings with garlic sauce over fried rice. Last time, the rice was really salty and the chicken wings were un-crispy.

  3. So…I'm single again (Chinese food take-out wise, not really. Margot G is on here and might go 'excuuuuuuuuse me?!?' if I didn't preface this). 🙂

I have broken many a hearts with Chinese food take-out places. We meet, we fall head over heels for each other. She has the delectable sweet & sour chicken pieces; I have the crisp $20 bills. There have been matches made in heaven.

…and then I move away. In this case, to a different borough.

No Pork Halal was sort of the sloppy seconds brand. The sauce was definitely the best part of my sweet & sour chicken dish, but the chicken and fried rice were underwhelming. Not bad by any means, but, not memorable either. Still, she only made me shell out $6 on our first date, so that's not a huge loss in the grand scheme of things.

    *sigh*

Looks like it's back to Chinese food take-out speed dating for me!

  4. I've lived in this neighborhood for 5+ years and No Pork Halal Kitchen has become a recurring joke. The fact that the restaurant name is so spot-on and it caters to a very niche audience make it the perfect butt of many "how is this place still in business?" jokes.

But hey, sometimes you're drunk off your ass and need Chinese food to tide you over. Yes, even I eat American Chinese food sometimes. Alcohol does strange things to a person.

Ordered the General Tso's chicken with fried rice. It was definitely made to order, as it took about 5 minutes and the chicken was probably some of the crispiest I've had. Let's not dwell on how large the pieces are because then you just go down a rabbit hole of "what the hell am I actually eating?"

Portion sizes were good, especially for the price. Only complaint was that the fried rice was pretty embarrassing. Seemed like they just took white rice and tossed it in soy sauce. It was brown and not very fried. It was definitely rice though.

China Wok across the street is slightly better, but I hope to never be drunk enough to return to either.

  5. I just happened to be staying near by, but wow – the fried chicken is absolutely delicious! And great portions.
The chicken vegetable low mien, fried rice and chicken – perfect dinner on a rainy night.

    *grab hot sauce packets!!

  6. This is a really great place to get take out. NOT TO EAT IN. It gets way too crowded in this small restaurant. But some people struggle to find seats and sit and eat as tons of people squeeze their way in and out of the restaurant. Also the crowd the hangs around the restaurant isn't too pleasant. The food is great. The price is even better. But you have to be in the mood for Chinese. So if you want Halal Chinese to go I suggest come here. If you need a place to sit or delivery choose some place else.
