Nobu

“They are known for the black cod miso dish, but I thought it was just average.”

“4 signature dishes~
Kampachi jalapeño(bottom right):
Very similar to the yellow tail jalapeño, but more chewy, and less smooth.”

“P.S. Nobu's rock shrimp tempura with spicy creamy sauce is the only food I've ever dreamt about.”

  1. This review is for Nobu Next Door which has Nobu's signature dishes but a more casual vibe (and right next door to Nobu). I wasn't impressed with the decor – seemed cheesy and not very sophisticated or cool. We went for restaurant week and still could only manage a 10:30pm ressie (on a Friday night). Our waiter was really nice and we got the set menu and they also had a restaurant week drink menu which was great. We got glasses of sake with ice for $7 each – great deal. The dinner menu is $42/each. We got the black cod miso app (one of their signature dishes) which was fantastic and the sashimi salad (ok – a bit on the fishy side). For entrees, we got rock shrimp tempura (very good but I'm not a huge fan of deep fried breaded things) and the assorted sushi – really great and fresh and yummy (it costs $40 on the regular menu). And for dessert, we got the rhubarb tart (too sweet) and the caramel miso tart – which was DIVINE and I would go back just to eat this – and I'm not even a big dessert person. Overall, excellent food, lovely service, meh vibe and decor, kind of pricy and feels a bit snobby in there.

  2. Overall, good deal for restaurant week, but I would highly suggest going for lunch as dinner I thought was still a bit pricey for the quality. Lunch is a really good deal for 3 courses.

the atmosphere is very trendy and poppin on a random Monday night after 10PM. Diverse crowd and chill…but also classy/dressy

    I got the
    1. black miso cod wrapped in lettuce leaf -too sweet and not fatty/buttery enough for my taste
    2. assorted sushi – most were OK in freshness but not the greatest I have had. -scallop / mackerel pieces were my favorite. rice did not hold together that well…
    3. the caramel miso tartlette -surprisingly pleasant..I liked this dessert a LOT.

I was trying to taste out what the tart-bit was and later read back that it was apricot lime compote. I could faintly make out the miso savory after taste, and the caramel cream was the perfect texture and sweetness on top of the chocolate tart.

I read that the black cod miso was good, but I found it underwhelming as it was not exactly traditionally prepared(I guess that was the point).

The beef tenderloin I tried from my friend's plate was surprisingly delicious. Obviously this place is more known to people who are not sushi connoisseurs so it's not really like they would've known the difference between the fish they were eating and what is traditional in a japanese sense. It is more a fusion hip/trendy like place. Great place for people who don't eat sushi raw as there are plenty of other options. Google said that it has a peruvian infusion (this seems to be a popular fusion-sushi samba for example).

This place is highly esteemed and for what it was worth, I enjoyed the dinner. However, not sure if I can frequent regularly as I am not Drake #nobunobunobunobu

  3. A trendy place with a "go to be seen" vibe. Food is good (not the best sushi in Tribeca) and cocktails are always strong. Yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño is a must try for an appetizer. Rock shrimp, wagyu beef, and molten chocolate cake with matcha ice cream are a few of my favorite items. Servers are so nice, but aggressive with the up sell.

Upscale vibe with loud music and very dim lights. Good for date nights or celebratory dinners.

  4. Restaurant week x3
    A true 3 1/2 star.
Nobu might just be that overrated but nonetheless the food was good. Japanese fusion kind of good, which I'm not sure is a good thing for such a well known restaurant.

Atmosphere is your typical 'chic club' kind of feel. The music made me feel like I was in a lounge of some sort **exclusive guests only** Most people were dressed to the nines: heels, button downs, the whole works.

    The food?
We both ordered the Assorted Sushi entree which was more or less the epitome of BASIC. I'm sure our thought process was to taste if the sushi was that much different than your down-the-street Japanese joint… But alas, was it THAT different? THAT much more fresh? Not really.

The best thing we ate were the Miso Cod and our desserts. The cod was fatty and extremely flavorful, the kitchen added a touch of crunch with fried vermacelli noodles (i think) and some fresh notes with the lettuce.. can't expect anything less from a miso cod. The desserts were like little sushi themselves. Artfully put together, and extremely decadent.

Overall good, but could be better.

  5. It shouldn't be a surprise the amount of hype that this place generates considering its status as one of the best Japanese restaurants in Manhattan (and its former michelin star status).  The decor is meant to resemble a beautiful Japanese countryside, with a clear "be seen" vibe radiating from a good portion of the patrons (a big part of going to Nobu is the scene itself).  The service is usually spectacular, so don't be afraid to ask some hard-hitting questions about the menu.

The food doesn't really need to be reviewed (it's Nobu, it's awesome), but expect to shell out some serious coin at this place as this is one of those New York establishments where part of the experience is trying as much of the menu as possible.

  6. Nobu is an excellent sushi bar. Everything was fresh and artistically presented. Their sushi is done in the traditional Japanese style for the most part; meaning there are few american style maki rolls on the menu. They excel at small plates of various carpaccios and other appetizers. We did not sample the entrees. We mostly stuck to nigiri sushi, which was superb.  Nobu is spendy however. But you are buying quality and not quantity. Our server was very knowledgable about the menu and made excellent suggestions.

  7. It gets really crowded during restaurant week! But Nobu is always a fun and solid choice for good Japanese food. Top choices: lobster tempera (meat is juicy tender and sweet!), king crab tempera with ponzu sauce (sophisticated flavor and very fresh king crab), and crispy rice with tuna/salmon. Top choice of dessert: bento box (matcha ice cream plus chocolate lava cake).

I had better wagyu beef and black cod in the midtown location. Wagyu beef is better presented while less flavorful as the midtown one.

  8. We had heard such great things about Nobu, but from start to finish, we were left unimpressed. The food, drinks, and service were good but not outstanding. I'm sad that the experience did not live up to the hype, but it's a nice place to check out once.
