Ollie’s Sichuan

“Good value and near enough to Times Square for a quick lunch or dinner while hitting the tourist spots.”

“I have been for 10+ years (when Ollies had a different location near the Theater District) and they make my top 10 list as far as dumplings go.”

“Yes, it may lack the authenticity of the Chinatown noodle dim sum places, but most new yorkers have eaten here at one time or another.”

  1. Definitely not as good as the other sichuan places in NYC but not the worst. They actually haev a few authentic choices on the menu but most of it has become american-chinese dishes (they even have a fauz-cantonese section). It's funny being there surrounded by white people who order multiple paltes of fried rice and lo mein–excuse me racism. Decor is also super confusing but food is cheap and service is quick, plus compared to other palces, service here is actually really nice.

  2. I enjoy this place.  Ordered a few times for takeout and eaten inside once.

The sichuan staples I've had are very tasty.  My go to dishes for a new sichuan place are mapo tofu, dan dan noodles and dry-friend string beans.  All three were very tasty here, and I'd recommend.

They do have some more Americanized options, and I'd probably not recommend those.  But if you want some mouth-numbing spicy chili oil sichuan food, Ollie's is a solid choice.

  3. Simple chinese food – cant go wrong with that

Only thing I didnt like was that knowing we needed a bigger table, we werent offered :/

  4. Once again, I needed a quick bite before an appointment since I would not have time to eat later.  I was seated right away and a menu appeared. I ordered the jumbo shrimp dish with cashews with brown rice. It was very good. I finished my meal, the check came, I paid and left. A very quick, satisfying Chinese lunch. I would recommend and return.

  5. When my parents visited, I took them to over 20 chinese restaurants in the city and they said this is definitely their favorite. (Words from local chinese!)

Service is far better than average chinese restaurant as well.

Get the boiling fish fillet. Yum

  6. Can't believe I haven't written a review for Ollie's yet. Don't pay attention to the averge three star review because this place is the best for authentic Chinese food. I used to live a five minute walk away from here and it's very close to the Times Square and Port Authority. If you order the non-Americanized food you can't go wrong here – our friends who didn't like Ollie's the first time came back with us and admitted defeat after trying what we ordered. The food hits the spot and surprisingly the cocktails are bomb as well. Maybe don't get takeout for the cheaper dishes, but bring a group of people here and get the spicy, real Sichuan entrees and you're guaranteed a good time.

  7. Usually I expect mediocre service from Chinese restaurants but this was honestly just bad. We came here at 6, and they would not seat us because one person from our party was not here yet, but we did assure them that we would order everything right away. Nope, not okay. 5 minutes later, the last person from our party arrived, but the table was gone. The hostess said its our fault that we lost our table but assured us that another table should be ready soon. More and more people started arriving, and the chances of us getting a table seemed slimmer and slimmer. The hostess was super rude. Every time we asked for the estimated wait time, she would yell at us. 40 minutes later, we still didn't have a table, and we didn't have an answer as to when we would get it. Yes, the service industry is a stressful one, but yelling at customers is not an appropriate way to win business. We ended up walking over to Savour Sichuan on 39th for dinner – no wait and delicious food!

  8. When I worked in the Times Square area, my co-workers and I used to go to the Ollie's on 44th Street for lunch or to hang out after work.  We had many great memories from that place, so, when we planned a reunion, it was only natural that we wanted to go there.  Unfortunately, that Ollie's has closed down.

We discovered this Ollie's on 42nd Street by 9th Avenue, and decided to go there.

The décor was not as nice as the one on 44th St., but it wasn't bad either.  And, aside from a slight mix up in the beginning, the service was good.

As for the food…  We started with steamed shrimp, pork, & veggie dumplings.  They weren't bad, but they weren't as great as we remembered.

When my co-worker ordered her dish, she asked that they tone down the spice.  I guess that they decided to tone everything down.  I ordered the Numbing Spicy Chicken, which had 3 peppers on the menu.  It did have a slightly spicy aftertaste, but it was hardly numbing.  One co-worker ordered the eggplant with garlic sauce, which was flavorful, but, overall, we were underwhelmed.

I am rarely in this area nowadays, but if I ever am, I will try this place again.  It's possible I got them on an off day.
