  1. Oh OTTO, you are a hidden gem. You are though a deceiver. Only people who have come here know how to order the right things.  Otto is an Enoteca def not a pizzeria!  Their pizza is not NY Pizza and it's far from well,  GOOD!  When you come here get Everything but the Pizza!  This a Mario Batali establishment. Take it for everything it's worth. He sells fresh macaroni dishes here and it's damn good!

Things to know, make a reservation. This place is busy and if you don't have one you may not get a table. If your driving come early, because it's hard to find parking.

The restaurant is enormous. Dark wood and warm, rich colors on the wall. When walking thru the revolving door, to the right, is a podium to check in  and to left, is high tables to wait for your table and farther in is a bar.  The restaurant is beautiful and the ambience is really nice. Unfortunately, it is very loud and people are running back and forth. I wouldn't consider this a romantic restaurant.

    The food:

When you order right, the food is Amazing! The food is fresh and full of flavor we've ordered:

Eggplant Cappanata- it comes cold with pine nuts, olives and brick oven bread. It's sweet and tart. This is a small plate item but will def be able to serve two people.

Peas with prosciutto- this was flavorful, fresh and seasoned well. This was our first time ordering and we just loved it.

Broccoli rabe, ricotta salata and chilis- I ate around the chilis but I heard they were a bit hot. This also was fresh and very well seasoned. The saltiness of the ricotta salata played great with the bitterness of the rabe.

For a special we had Burrata with Peas, Asparagus, Pesto and Balsamic.  The Burrata was creamy and went well with the crunchy veggies and sweet balsamic just a great app.

I love that they have a ton of veg dishes to choose from and then you can have macaroni and not feel that bad!  They also have meats and cheese you can also choose from.

We ordered bucatini with guanciale, ramps, and Parmesan- this was a special. The macaroni was perfect al dente! It was so addicting I could not stop eating it. I wish I wasn't so full. I liked that they also used ramps. Which is in season.

We also ordered spinach tagliatelle Bolognese. Which is a classic Italian sauce. It was delicious. The tomato sauce is fresh not acidic meaty, just delicious. Again macaroni is fresh and al dente.

You can't leave here with out getting dessert. They have the best gelato. The same from Eataly is what I'm told. We ordered:

The affogato which is vanilla gelato with espresso. It's like the best dessert drink known to man lol

    We also ordered:

Black and white-  it's milk chocolate chip gelato, creme fraiche gelati, hazelnut croccante, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce

Cherry coppetta- chocolate cake, cherry gelato, dark chocolate gelato, cherry crema, cherry sauce

Everything was just amazing we stuffed our faces and well we felt guilty, and it was def worth it!

So will I come to OTTO again? Absolutely!! It will be for app and macaroni and great desserts. Well done Mario Batali for a great Enoteca!(250)

  2. Took two of my students to lunch to celebrate their presentations at a conference, and it was a wonderful experience! First off, we ran into Mario Batali himself on our way in! Almost literally! Yay for my first celebrity chef sighting.  🙂 One of us was vegetarian, so we ordered two non-meat pizzas (the asparagus & goat cheese and the margherita), plus two salads, the caprese and the arugula. We also added a side of prosciutto for the omnivores. Everything was seriously good. The margherita pizza was delicious, especially with the prosciutto draped on. Asparagus was OK, but the goat cheese was a little weird. Both salads were huge hits, especially the very unusual take on the caprese. Complimentary bread and breadsticks were also well received. The true highlight, though, were the desserts!  We shared the tiramisu, the black and white, and the tartufo – the gelato was amazing, and each had some textural contrast (crunchy chocolate cookies, etc.). So glad we splurged!  Just over $100, and well worth it.

  3. I always enjoyed Otto as a "special treat" restaurant while at NYU. Afterward, when I started working, I wondered if it wouldn't be as good once I'd gone to many other restaurants. It turns out it's still equally as good and a fun experience!

I highly recommend a reservation most nights of the week, as even though there is a big wine bar-esque setup in the front of the restaurant, it can be a very long wait without reservations. All that to say, the restaurant itself is actually quite large. The food is also very reasonably priced, with pastas in the $12-16 range and pizzas ranging from $7-16 (they also have cheeses, meats, fish, etc.).

We started with a tasting plate of vegetables, of which there are many to choose from. At $6/each, we got the Spicy Rabe & Ricotta Salata, Eggplant Caponatina, Cauliflower all Siciliana and Roasted Beets with Mustard & Honey. Each was prominent in its respective flavor. I enjoyed the eggplant the most, as the sweet tomatoes and onions worked well with the sautéed eggplant. They were a nice, light start to the meal.

Our group of three then split the Goat Cheese Agnolotti from the fresh pasta menu, made with lemon butter and fennel pollen. Their non-fresh pastas are also good, but the buttery goodness combined with the homemade taste makes a difference with this pasta. Beware: it is definitely buttery, but it melts in your mouth! And for those who aren't thrilled with goat cheese, you can't taste the sharp tang I sometimes do with goat cheese, it's much lighter. We also got the Aglio, Olio & Pepperoncino Pizza, which is essentially a spicier marinara sauce topped with garlic, olive oil and many fresh chilies. It has a kick to it, and with the pasta, you don't need the creamy cheese on this too, it's very satisfying on its own. The pepperoncini really makes the difference here. It's also a great size for $9!

We finished with two desserts – the black and white (my favorite) and cherry coppetta (my first time trying). The black and white is reliably good, just big enough to really share with one other person and the perfect combo of milk chocolate chip & crème fraîche gelati, hazelnut croccante, chocolate sauce, caramel cream. It is decadent – chocolate and vanilla and cream and fabulous! The cherry had fresh cherries in it, and you really had to like cherries to like this dessert. Fortunately, cherries are one of my favorite fruits! It was dense but great and had chocolate cake, cherry gelato, dark chocolate gelato, cherry crema, cherry cause. The chocolate cake and dark chocolate gelato added a nice chocolatey richness, which I always appreciate!

My husband and I our friend split a bottle of wine for about $35 – this was a much better deal than the individual glasses. If you're into wine, they have a massive menu for that, so check that out too.

Service was generally good, though we did have to flag our waiter down once or twice. Beware it can get a bit loud inside, but I'd tend to call it more festive, you definitely don't have to yell to hear your dining companions. Overall, we'll be back. Satisfying Italian food with a menu that has something for everyone.

  4. Went here for pizza and was not disappointed! I had the goat cheese pizza and the margherita. Both styles were tasty, crisp, and had nice flavors. The winner was, however, something I rarely order out — a pasta dish! Specifically, it was the pasta alla Norma. I don't prefer eating pasta out because it's one of the few things I *think* I can cook! However, I was not disappointed by this selection! Our table loved it and we devoured it rather quickly too! My only gripe is that I wish the serving was larger! We also had the caprese – solid, standard, and fresh. Finally, the dessert..oh my! Loved the gelatos! I had the olive oil and the lavender. No one at my table wanted to have a bite — which is good because I didn't want to share haha! I usually go for chocolatey or berry flavored desserts, but I am so glad I ventured out of my comfort zone. These flavors were unique and so rich!! Please try this restaurant! You'll love it.

  5. Had to hit up a Mario Batali spot while in New York. We had been walking around ALL DAY and stopped for a quick foot massage on 8th street before our 8:30 reservation. We looked like total worn out tourists, but it didn't really matter once we arrived. This spot is a little chaotic (like Italian Disneyland), and the waiting system for the tables is…interesting… (they give you a train station name and it shows up on the board; kitschy but also my parents wouldn't understand how to do it, ya know?).

The good news is that the food is DELICIOUS and affordable. We had a (co-owner) Joe Bastianich Rose that was delightful, and shared a pizza and some pastas. Our waitress was friendly enough. I think we were a perfect table, we knew what we wanted, ate a lot, and were out in under an hour.

This place is probably fun for groups, but I wont be running back next time I'm in New York. Probably prefer Morandi or even Eataly over Otto, but that's not to say you shouldn't try it!

  6. Come to Otto Enoteca if you are up for a group dinner where the wine and food know no stop!

I went to Otto Enoteca with a group of 14 people. We made a reservation for prix fixe dinner deluxe ($55 per person) and drinks deluxe ($30 per person) and we had the most wonderful experience!

The wine bar in the front is spacious and inviting. Marble tabletops are topped with candles to complement the dimmed lighting. The actual dining area is a lot more intimate and lively. If you are in the mood to chat all night and befriend strangers at the next table, this is the place to go!

The deluxe dinner menu is, well, deluxe! How much food do you get? SO MUCH that I feel like I'm gaining weight just thinking about it!!!

For 14 people, a table of 7 on each side, we got:
    – 3 plates of all different kinds of meat: prosciutto, salami, pancetta, you name it!
    – 2-3 plates of cheese: didn't actually get around to trying this but looked to me like 6-7 different kinds of cheeses!
    – 2-3 plates of each of the arugula & tomato and lettuce & red onion salads: refreshing salads, but I don't go to dinner for salads
    – 2 plates of mixed vegetable antipasti: we had eggplant, squash, beets, lentils, cauliflower, and something else I can't remember. The eggplant was PHENOMENAL! It has pine nuts mixed in and just tasted amazing with plain bread!!! I also loved the squash salad!
    – 2 plates of bruschetta of the day: pretty sure ours was the giovedi peperonata: roasted red & green peppers with red onion, garlic, fresh chillies, tomato, red wine vinegar and sugar
    – at least 5 pizzas (we had basil prosciutto, pepperoni, margarita, and something else)
    – 3 giant bowls of pasta: al dente to the perfection & so creamy and tomatoey!

Do you think you are done? Not even close!
    – 3 plates of mini-desserts: all kinds of biscotti, Italian rainbow cookies, & other desserts whose names I do not know
    – 4 plates of GELATO, each with 4-5 different flavors: the plate that came closest to me had olive oil, coffee, caramel and mango. The olive oil one was so delicious I wanted to put it on breads! I also tried the chocolate chip and strawberry ones – equally satisfying!!!

DRINKS: we chose the red, white and sparkling. They offered us choices of red, white, rose and prosecco. This place is also particularly dangerous if you dine in with drinks deluxe because YOU CAN NEVER TELL HOW MUCH YOU'VE HAD because they constantly come to fill your glasses – I personally don't drink very fast so I absolutely loved that!

I also had the pleasure of having my first amaro here! It's supposed to be a great traditional, after-dinner drink but it was too herbal & bitter for me. I really tried to enjoy it but I guess it is an acquired taste!

Definitely excited to go back next time I'm around Washington Square Park!

  7. We went in fully expecting to just order some wine and maybe a charcuterie before heading out to a nearby theater for a night of laughter and magic. But, one look at the menu, and we realized we were starving.

Oh, sure…we did the wine and our own charcuterie, but to that we added the entrees.

Our waiter was great; he knew about Celiac, and knew which items our friend would have to avoid. He also told us that they could make any pasta dish with a gluten-free version. Score!

He sent the sommelier to our table, and she pretty quickly helped us pick out a bottle of red to share. It wasn't too expensive, but it sure was delicious.

Next, our waiter came back to help us weed through the many cheese options. We knew that we wanted to order five (best value there), and that we like goat milk cheeses, which gave us three of our choices. One wanted a brie-like cheese, one wanted a blue-like cheese. He was able to walk us through the options to help us narrow down our selection.

We placed our real meal orders then, too. I got the puttanesca, one friend got the arugula pizza, and we got an order of the gluten-free pasta for the other friend.

Right before the cheese and meats came out, we were given three small plates, consisting of sweet apricots, cherries and truffle honey. And let me just tell you, that truffle honey? I considered grabbing the jar for our table. It was heavenly!

The cheeses and meats came out together, and they gave us a brief rundown of which was which before letting us tuck in. They were all very good, and paired really well both together, and with the fruits and honey (that honey, though!)

The meals came out pretty quickly after that, and they were also very good. The one with the allergy finished off her plate in no time. My puttanesca was flavorful and slightly spicy, which went perfectly with the wine. My other friend loved her pizza, though it might have been a bit much for just one person to consume.

I should have mentioned that we came here based on the recommendation of my CEO and an EVP. I'm glad we listened to them. Beyond the fantastic service (I promise to dig out my receipt to look up his name later…too much wine!) and delicious food, the price was very reasonable, as well. None of us had expected to get out of there spending less than $100 a person, but we did, even with two bottles of wine and a stellar tip!

  8. This place has gone downhill a lot since I came here about 8 years ago.  I guess there was always a reason I haven't been back here.  We had a table for 8 at 8:30 table. There were only 7 of us so they wouldn't allow us to sit.  Not sure the logic behind that so we wait at the bar and order drinks.  5 minutes later the 8th person shows up but we have to get our drink and close our tab at the bar which took 20 minutes. Why can't a restaurant move your tab to the table?  Why do you have two separate systems?  Then they give us a table that is more suited for 6 and people have to wedge themselves in. There is no chance in hell a server can reach you so we spent all night passing food and drinks to the seats next to the wall.  Another really annoying thing is that they have a rule that you have to put your entire order in at once, so we couldn't order the apps while people were still deciding on the entrees.   This place has a lot of rules, but none of them seem designed to make sure that their customer have a positive experience.  Certainly not for the quality of food coming out of the kitchen.  I do remember them having an amazing carbonara. Maybe my memory was messed up but it was watery and tasteless.
