Peculier Pub

“Also, Delirium on tap = not f'ing around
The bathroom leaves something to be desired but for a dive bar – not that bad.”

“The people you meet there are really cool as well, with a kickass jukebox.”

“I do, but they usually have enough interesting beers listed on the chalk board to even have to go to the beer menu.”

  1. Popped in for a drink and quick bite after a show on a frigid NYC night. Cool, chill vibe in the place. Friendly service, quick with a recommendation. Solid tap list, impressive bottle collection described by country of origin. Fried mushrooms were delicious – really flavorful and good sauce. My chicken parmesan sandwich was good but not exceptional, served with fries. Great spot to slide into for a good beer and a Bleecker street bar with no pretense. Loved the bottle cap mosaics all around the walls, that was very cool. Good stuff.

  2. Excellent! Their kitchen is open late. I tried their chicken fingers, which I'd rate as above average for pub food. The Buffalo sauce is house-made and has a unique sweet and spicy flavor. I'm from Buffalo proper, and I could tell that this was far removed from the NYC restaurant's tendency to dump Frank's on some fried chicken and try passing it off as "Buffalo sauce".

My cocktails tasted delicious, and contained a generous house pour of liquor. The staff and I got into a conversation about liquor, and their knowledge of it is vast, which is imperative to a patron such as myself, who likes to try new cocktails. They also have a large variety of beer, which is sure to keep any beer enthusiast satisfied with what they have to offer.

The bartender was very kind, and was able to help me navigate the menu by recommending food choices. In addition to that, she thanked me for my tip – something I don't expect, but something I definitely appreciate.

I chit-chatted with a few members of the staff, who were all delightful to interact with – including one waitress, one bartender, and one bouncer. I felt extremely welcome at this bar, and I have definite plans to return. Their food is satisfying, their service is of utmost commendable quality, and I did not feel as if I was walking into a situation where I was an inconvenience or an outsider, as I've often felt with other bars in that neighborhood.

I came here for a broadway game meetup. Some of the folk were easy to spot: less fashion savvy, glasses, not drinking, or holding an assortment of games. There was a steady trickle of people coming into the bar throughout the night. The waitress was great at the beginning but then the increasing number of patrons made the service slower and slower. On the plus side a pint of Yuengling only costs $5. They also have deep fried Oreos ($1 Each with 5 piece minimum). They were batter was salty and crispy like fish and chip plate. The Oreos were softer than expected. The thin chocolate sauce added the extra layer of decadence which help put my taste buds over the top.

Note: it's pay as you go. $25 credit card minimum. ATM in the back. The restroom were awful: cramped, covered in graffiti, and just below health code standards (in my opinion). There was a trash bag on the ceiling and I don't even want to think about.

Overall, peculiar pub is a great dive with cheap prices, fun people, and decor to match.

  4. I've been coming to the Peculier Pub since I was old enough to (legally) drink in Manhattan. It's still the same loud and dive-y beer lovers paradise.

A full bar and some inventive cocktails are on hand, but the Peculier Pub's claim to fame is the massive beer list: a usually rotating selection of well over 200 bottles from around the world: Israeli 'Gold Star', Sri Lankan 'Lion Stout', Lebanese '961 Lager' are some of the odder selections, with the menu also boasting a formidable assortment of hard-to-find German, English, and American brews. Throw in another 2 dozen on tap and you have arguably the best selection in the city.

While you're probably better off eating elsewhere, food isn't entirely an afterthought, with bar standards (burgers, cheesesteaks, fried stuff) done decently.

    Cash only, so be prepared.

And don't forget the check out the walls: collages of global currency and beer cans line the walls, which are themselves covered with thousands of bottle caps.

  5. This place is always so rowdy and crowded with college students looking for some cheap drinks, which hey is exactly what they're getting. It's definitely a lot of fun for when you want something more crazy and just for a good time to hang with friends. The drinks are definitely very cheap and sometimes they even give out free samples of their new stuff!

  6. Your quintessential dive bar. I'm surprised that Peculier Pub's picture isn't in the dictionary next to "dive bar." Then again, as dive-y as it is, it's one of the best dive bars I know. Food, your typical bar food… lots of fried things. Including, fried oreos. Personally, I've never eaten them, but my boyfriend loves them. Very large beer and drink selection as well.

Not typical of Dive Bars? A decent staff. I've been here, two or three… or 50? times, and I've always encountered, pleasant staff. Also check out their beer bottle art that is ALL over the entire place.

My only complaint. The bathroom. It's a onsie… and there is ALWAYS a line for it.

  7. Okay, I am going to preface this review with the fact that I came here with one of my BFF's who worked here around 2002.  But I love this place!  The crowd on a late Thursday night was diverse and had many age ranges.  There were about a million beers to choose from.  But I opted for my vodka and club, which was well made.  Jen, our server, was very friendly and attentive.  The menu looked like there was some good bar food staples.  I liked the art motif made of beer caps that decorated the entire room.  Music was great … who doesn't love Michael Jackson?  We got to talk to Wen, who reminisced about the good old days with my friend, Val.  Bar is cash but you can use credit cards at the tables.  I just got a really happy vibe from Peculiar Pub and am def coming back.

  8. Like Louis R. said … "okay, on to the next bar."

I'd say "peculier" is a good way to describe this spot. But why did they spell peculiar wrong? I digress…..

Came on a warm, summer Friday night. It was okay, the crowd was um, different?

Bartender was nice, I ordered 4 or 5 shots of tequila and it seemed like she couldn't decide what to charge me each time. $8 then $6 then $7 then back to $8. Lol? Each shot was actually a double shot so I'm not exactly complaining.

Their security is also odd. There was a bouncer at the door, although he did not look or act like a bouncer. I was meeting friends there so I entered alone (around 11pm), made eye contact with him, after he didn't ask for my ID I just continued to the bar. Then a few minutes later he awkwardly checked my ID and said he wasn't sure if he should ask for it or not. Lol what? So weird.

I've only been here once but my feeling is that it's more of a low key, sit at the bar or sit at a table and socialize kind of place. Not necessarily a bad thing if that's what you're going for.

Maybe I'll end up here again? But so many bars in Manhattan, so little time to get drunk at them all.
